Washington (CNN) — Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar's fellow freshman lawmakers are coming to the Minnesota congresswoman's defense Thursday after remarks she made referencing 9/11 as "some people did something" were criticized in a New York Post cover that featured the Twin Towers.
Speaking at an event last month for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Omar said, "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties."
The New York Post published Thursday's tabloid with the quote from Omar, who is one of two Muslim women in Congress, and an image of the Twin Towers engulfed in flames from September 11, 2001. Under the picture is the headline "Here's your something."
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York slammed the New York Post's cover as "horrifying" and "hateful."
Ocasio-Cortez pointed to Omar's co-sponsorship of a bill that would reauthorize the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.
"She's done more for 9/11 families than the GOP who won't even support healthcare for 1st responders- yet are happy to weaponize her faith," Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter.
Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts accused the Post of "manipulating" Omar's remarks, and said that her full comments "clearly speak" to Islamophobia in America post-9/11.
"Manipulating her remarks is defaming & dangerous for her & her family," Pressley said on Twitter. "Stop with this recklessness."
She blamed Rupert Murdoch, who owns the Post, writing, "This is on you - stoking hate, fear & division, putting REAL lives at risk. Shame on you."
"The NY Post knows exactly what it's doing - taking quotes out of context and evoking painful imagery to spread hate and endangering the life of Rep. Omar. Shame on them, and shame on Rupert Murdoch," said Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat and the other Muslim woman in Congress, on Twitter.
CNN has reached out to Murdoch's corporation News Corp and the New York Post for comment.

Haha fuck you dems and your crocodile tears. Ask the average New Yorker how they feel about those comments, I get the feeling this isn't just the astroturfed faux outrage campaign you guys are trying to say it is...

EDIT: Also, fuck them so hard, so very fucking hard, for this bullshit about "stoking hate, fear & division, putting REAL lives at risk. Shame on you". Oh geez, you guys never told anyone to make sure ICE agents "Never feel safe or welcome" when they go out in public. You never suggested a 16 year old kid needed to be assaulted for smiling at an indian... That really pisses me off.

The NY Post has cast iron balls. They're right in the heart of lunatic blue country, and they've been going after leftist darlings like AOC and DeBlasio like rabid dogs. I'm half expecting a mob of wokesters with pitchforks and torches to storm The Post and smash the presses.

Then again, there are probably enough pissed off old-school city mooks waiting quietly in the shadows and just itching for an opportunity to grab baseball bats and crack some hipster skulls.

Ignoring actions to focus on poorly worded quotes, how’s that taste of your own medicine?

She's already whining that Big Boss (Dan Crenshaw) "incited violence" against her by responding by tweeting "Unbelievable"
Well, good I guess. If we can get them publically shrieking that any criticism of the incredibly stupid things they say is violence, maybe people will wake up to the fact that these psychos want to criminalize disagreeing with them.

I really don't like this lady. She cares more about herself and defending Islam than her country.
Most politicians care more about themselves and defending their corporate overlords, but at least you can argue corporations benefit America in some way, Islam doesn't.
It's increasingly obvious she sympathizes with extremists to the point she can't hide her powerlevel. Fuck her

It's ironic that the Democratic Party taking back the House in Congress after the 2018 Midterm Election is now the worst thing that has happened to them.

At this point, I'm pretty sure that Donald Trump is very likely going to continue being the President of the United States where he will very likely get a second term in office and it's going to be the fault of the unhinged left that voted for a bunch of idiotic speds such as Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez into public office because they really don't know how to keep their big mouths shut.

Thing is, she was talking about the resulting Islamophobia after 9/11, which is a real thing Muslims had to deal with in the aftermath, so taking her out of context like that really isn’t fair. On the other hand, my sympathy is limited because the left loves doing that as much as the right. So basically fuck politicians and the mainstream media as always. They pit regular folk against each other and make money off it.

Uhh, no, she was talking about the terror attacks themselves, as they relate to the far more important problem of islamophobia. She could have said "Some extremists killed thousands, and we in the islamic community needed to blah blah blah" but she didn't she said "Some people did something, and followers of Islam suffered. The fucking 9/11 attack wasn't to unite people against muslims, it was to kill americans. The fact that so many muslims apparently wanted to kill americans is what united people against muslims.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, by paraphrasing C.S. Lewis - Corrupt businessmen will at least stop bothering you when you're broke, once they've controlled all your money, they have nothing more to gain by pestering you. But ideologues? They won't rest until they've controlled your thoughts and dreams, and as long as you still think freely without consulting them first, you are an enemy class to them.

The latest crop of "next-gen" progressives have fully embraced this notion that they are the dream-masters, nobody can think or say anything that's not on the pre-approved list of correct opinions, and they'd gladly move on to enforcing it with violence, if they thought they could get away with it.

It's why her and AOC are such media darlings, yet so hated among constituents and rank-and-file, they aren't corrupt business-backers, they're ideologues who firmly believe their word is law and they recognize no loyalty to country, to nation, to voters, to districts or to cities, they only care about wielding the absolute power they foolishly believe they now have forever.

Word choice absolutely matters when talking about something like 9/11, and the fact that she termed the literal defining moment of the 00s as "some people who did something" shows she is less rhetorically sophisticated than Donald J. Trump.
