I remember Saddlesore very well, as it was the first Simpsons episode I saw that I truly despised. I know it was never a show grounded in reality, but magical elf jockeys was like a rejected South Park episode.
The sad thing is that compared to the crap thats being put out by the show today, Saddlesore is a laugh riot. The plots a mess and at times it feels like the writers are spitting in the face of the audience, but there are actual jokes and funny scenes. Even when the plots gone off the rails with the jockey elves I'm still laughing at some of the scenes. Really shows just how far the show has fallen when I'm looking at what was once rock bottom with rose tinted glasses.

Tonight on Fox's Thousand Dollar Movie, it's Roger Corman's Titanic!
Thats gotta be one of the more obscure jokes the show has done because unless you're a fan of B movies or MS3K type shows the name Roger Corman is going to mean nothing to you. Still I'd rather watch something by Corman than current episodes.

iirc Corman had a revival of sorts around that time with a deal with Showtime doing new crap like Black Scorpion (the chick in black leather, not the giant monster) and reboots of some of his old crap, like I think Teenage Caveman? I might be conflating two 90s runs of Corman but he still had gas in the tank around Titanic for sure

You know what always kinda bugged me? How Homer got over his homophobia in the episode Homer's Phobia (which was a delicious pun) but it just ends up coming back in Three Gays of the Condo. Like, did they forget they'd already had Homer get over his disdain of gays when one of them saved his fucking life? I mean it involved being pummeled by reindeer and a crazy Japanese Santa robot, how the fuck did that not become one of Homer's most vivid memories? And how the fuck did not one writer point it out?

Even earlier Homer wasn't offended when his gay assistant kissed him in season 2. I think for each of these episodes there was a different showrunner and set of writers.

I can chalk that one up to Homer being an idiot who can't tell if someone is gay unless its spelled out for him. Karl never said he was in love with Homer even though it was painfully obvious and Homer probably just saw him as a really dedicated assistant and friend trying to help him make it as an executive. With Jon the minute Marge told him he was gay is when Homer freaked out even though it was obvious the previous night that Jon was as straight as a rainbow. I can buy Homer being a minor homophobe because he's a blue collar worker who has never hung out with gay people and gets all his views on them from TV stereotypes, but hes too stupid to notice actual gay people.

I distinctly remember my dad howling with laughter whenever he first heard Bill Clinton say, "Well, I'm a pretty lousy president" at the end of the episode. It was freaky.
They would never even dream of doing anything remotely similar to that nowadays. The Zombie episodes strike me as having some kind of internal production code à la the classic Hollywood film code: only this code mandates that the GOP must always be the subject of contempt, and that all left wing politicians must be portrayed as benevolent heroes. As much as the show has always been dominated by preachy progressive creators, they would still occasionally take jabs at Democratic politicians if it was germaine to the subject. Hell, does everyone seem to forget about Mayor Quimby? He's established as being a Democrat, and his character (and to a greater extent, his family) serves as a negative stereotypical personification of corruption in American politics. His voice and character lore is clearly a satire of the Kennedy dynasty. Although, in later episodes like around the bronze, pre-Zombie era, they started to really use that rich Texan character as a new generic corrupt politician character – and of course they made him conservative.

I remember there was an episode from like Season 18 or 19 that featured Michelle Obama (not voiced by her) coming to cheer Lisa up while Michelle's ass gets kissed by everyone in Springfield. It was pathetic. Funnily enough, I also remember they made a jab at Joe Biden...

Meanwhile, Bart can't catch a damn break and has to give up something he likes just to make her feel better.

Even if it was her own fault (like that time a tiger she was hiding mauled Bart's arm), Bart still has to appease her.

What’s interesting is that they wanted to bring Karl back but Harvey Fierstein didn’t like the proposed script and he turned it down.

Simpson and Delilah is one of my favorite episodes. Exceptionally written even if it wasn’t a gut buster.
