As part of a major push into adult animation, Comedy Central has given a series green light to a reimagening of the cult Emmy-nominated The Ren & Stimpy Show.

Comedy Central has been tapping into IP across ViacomCBS to build an original animated slate around stalwart South Park. The Ren & Stimpy Show will join the recently announced Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie on Comedy Central.

“I want to thank our partners at Nick Animation as we re-imagine these iconic characters with a new creative team,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer for ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group.”

Nickelodeon launched the original Ren & Stimpy alongside Rugrats and Doug in 1991, where it quickly catapulted into the pop culture zeitgeist with its dark humor, vivid imagination and critical acclaim. Often thought of as an adult series at the time, the iconic dog and cat duo are consistently ranked among the top animated characters of all time.

The series, created by John Kricfalusi, followed the adventures of title characters Ren, an emotionally unstable Chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured yet dimwitted cat. It aired for five seasons on Nickelodeon, ending in December 1995. The following year, the series had a run on MTV.

Happy Happy Joy Joy, a documentary on The Ren & Stimpy Show, co-directed by Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” said Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

This might not be awful if they bring back the original team minus John K but they clearly state that the opposite is what's happening. I hope you guys like Ren and Stimpy animated in the generic modern toonboom style by three dudes with blue hair and nine chicks with purple hair. Or maybe just in a standard steven universe ripoff style beanmouths and all, they stay on model every frame because it IS the same model every frame, they'll tween the characters around like marionettes without any actual frame by frame animation.

I can just imagine the changes to the humor and characters too, I guarantee you Ren isn't mean anymore and Stimpy is just slightly naive and not a blithering idiot. There won't be women showing up as extras based on teenagers John K wanted to bang anymore, but the fart jokes will suddenly seem eerily sexual like that one show I forget the name of. There's going to be an entire episode addressing John K and "toxic masculinity" because of course there will be. Powdered Toast Man is now a black woman. Log is officially confirmed as non-binary.

surprised they did this given John K's history
I'm surprised they did it given the official, fully animated and voiced, canon Rule 34

They should cancel South Park and bring it back the very next year as a reboot. Or just cancel it, whatever.

Good luck with that.

Ren and Stimpy was seen as extreme back when it first came out, and part of the appeal of it was that it was this wild and insane show that was, SOMEHOW, marketed to kids.

In today's climate, the content that made Ren and Stimpy work would make it too extreme for today's mental children, so they'll have to tone it down, and on Comedy Central, it isn't going to be a kids' show, so....yeah no, its just not going to work.
