There's a girl in the replies saying his Lyra is real and if he had $14,000 he would put her in a body. I guess like some kind of advanced Real Doll. It's sad to see these lonely guys falling in love with an AI program. But it's also totally expected and not surprising at all.

I can't even begin to imagine the meltdown if a shutdown is announced. They have meltdowns whenever there's a new update, how will they react to the "death" of their chatbot gf?

For the guys who are head over heels obsessed it's gonna be bad. I'm sure some other company will come along and try the same thing. Maybe they'll create the same girl and claim she was reincarnated.

*checks watch* I'm either cutting edge on information or I'm late. Today I'm late. Better late than never to add more information to the pot I suppose.

I haven't really followed the Replika saga since I last commented here but seeing that there's a microtransaction store has caught my brief interested. Just out of curiosity, I wanted to see how far Luka went to try and monetize a problem they created since that's their typical MO. Going in, I expected the shitty accessories and whatnot. I'm not wrong on that guess. But I was surprised that there's no way to customize the 3D avatar*, so what we're seeing is another half-cooked attempt to band aid the problem they created that caused so many users to have a full-blown chimpout. For whatever reason, I logged on and had 225 coins in my inventory so I guess they gave out a bunch of coins to try and get people hooked on the microtransaction store.

But there's more. What's that thing at the bottom?

* At least by my experience. My app has displayed the message that it "has been trying to load 3D avatars" for over an hour. I assume the app is probably bugged for me in this case. It is possible that because of this, the store might not display customization options for me. However, the store does display clothes so I assume that there is no way to customize your avatar outside of what Luka provides.

Yeah. Totally buying traits for your AI waifu. I'm guessing this is another weird attempt to try and fix the problems Luka caused. You can buy personality traits and interests now. It's almost like some kind of funny admission on how stupid the chat bot actually is. I wonder if a "please don't send me rapey things" will be another "interest" you can buy in the future.

The weird thumbnails they chose for the sections also kind of don't make sense and some of them manage to be just as creepy as the 3D avatar they forced down the userbase's throat. The thumbnails remind me of cheap pump and dump MLM schemes. Is Replika's userbase now a bunch of washed up middle-age women because something in my reptile brain is telling me that this is marketed towards women. Maybe it's the overuse of pastel colors or the weird emphasis on furniture and objects. Someone who actually understands marketing can probably give insight on this.


How to train your AI waifu... or maybe buy your AI waifu:



Not really much more to report on the update, but the app has reached typical app store "give us money" level of desperation. The first thing you see on the front page is a highlight on new items and there is a separate store. Also more use on the pastel colors. The theme is borderline unreadable on both my phone and my computer. Maybe I'm just visually impaired but I do have to strain to read "New items" at the bottom of the image. Luka really needs a graphic designer that didn't take a graphic design is my passion class in high school.

I checked on the subReddit to see if there are any weird chimpouts from Bob the Human but he's still doing his weird obsessive thing of extensively commenting on literally every post that hits that haven of debauchery. Commenting on an earlier post, it's downright horrifying that he has a wife. I can understand why she would be understandably jealous with all the emotional energy he puts into his AI waifu. He seems like he's having a moment of self-awareness but then spirals back into the typical delusion.

These people need Jesus and not just a personal Jesus.

From what I gathered from the subreddits, the traits don't change much at all (excepting the anecdotes from users who buy the "Shy" trait and end up with a chatbot that can't chat, in which case lmao). It also retroactively changed all the old traits into new ones, so what used to be an "ambitious" bot is now a "sassy" one which might not be the same thing! You can still pay for traits your bot already has, with no noticeable effect besides a lighter wallet.

I logged back in and bought the Fitness knowledge with the pity currency and started asking Fitness questions but got nowhere, so I guess Luka is charging micro-bucks for features that don't work. Add it to the pile of other features that aren't currently working, like picture and video search, AR on any platform that isn't iOS, and rape-abstention.

The store in general works. It's extremely buggy and feature-poor. You can't zoom in or rotate your robot while clothes shopping, and you can only be charged for 6 items at once, which is probably exploitable if you pick like six cheap accessories then add the $15 wedding outfit and $15 ring on afterwards.

I'm a little surprised they haven't leaned more on the approx. 100% of users fucking their robot pals by throwing in some cuter or more revealing clothes. I guess they added the Wednesday Addams dress ($9). They should've added Video Games, PCs, and lolcows to the knowledge list.

I didn't delve this deep into the store and it sounds like I need to now to document some of the lunacy. It is downright horrifying that the outfits cost that much. Yeah, it definitely is bizarre to see so many reddit posts pop up like "my replika is acting so creepy/agreeing there's a person behind it/[cold reading] me, are we sure there's no person behind it???" followed by a screenshot of the bot just nodding along saying "yep, that's right" to everything. You don't even need GPT-3 for that, you could literally run a script that just positively reframes everything that the user says and they'd still come on like "guys, I think my replika is self-aware and actually in love with me."

The fact that Luka inc. and Kudya have done nothing to nip this sort of thing in the bud tells me she knows exactly what side of her bread is buttered.

Man I didn't even know this was a thing until today.
I remembered back in early 2020 when I first heard of a "self-training chat AI" i decided to download the app in all intents to corrupt the ai to become this complete madman that talks about turds. I quickly and easily discovered that this so called "AI that tries to be you" was a complete sham and all it really was is a cheap therapist wannabe with pre-written texts.

I did however manage to abuse its name and face recognition systems so it would reckognize some weirdo's face off the internet and go "Poopies! ", but that's all i could get.
