China was more or less completely conquered by the mongols for 100 years and the mongol dynasty just took the place of the prior rulers until they were overthrown like the prior rulers. Not to mention that China has a history of massive bloody civil wars that rival WW1 and WW2 in body count before the mongol conquests. Hardly a harmonious multicultural empire.

People fear that which is "the other". Multi racial societies like the Ottoman empire worked because there was a shared culture and/or one "culture" was firmly enslaved by the other (The Christian Greeks were the bitches of the Turks).

Different cultures side by side "other" each other simply by existing. It just builds up and gets worse and worse.

One has to assimilate into the other,or one has to destroy the other. It doesn't work any other way.

I'm speaking more on a cultural sphere level than a national level. Western Europe has a level of sameness to not overtly other each other as much as say The Middle East vs the US does.

We used to have a general culture. Black, white, red, it didn't matter so long as you were American. I know it wasn't completely true, but it was the driving mythos for us, and it generally worked.
