I'm reaaaaallly late to the party on these games. To be completely honest, my first real exposure to the SMT series and its spinoffs was Persona 4: Arena, which I bought on a whim when at a Gamestop. I heard the gorup that worked on BlazBlue helped develop it, and figured I'd give it a shot. From there, I had to learn more about the actual storyline.

So, back in late December, right after Christmas, I broke down and bought a PS3. It was the first Sony console I ever bought, mostly to find out what was the fricking big deal with The Last of Us, and also because as an avid (read: obsessive) gamer, I wanted to catch up on a lot of the games from Gen-7 (and some from Gen-6 when they're available via PSN) that I couldn't get on my 360. One of these games was Persona 4. Annnnnd yeah, after the grueling hours-long tutorial section, I just really got sucked into the game. Since then, my PS3 has become a glorified storage cabinet for SMT games, including Persona 2, 3, SMT: Nocturne, and Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Souless Army. I've also picked up SMT: IV, and Soul Hackers, for my 3DS.

As for playing them... here's the thing- I tend to play thing in short bursts so I really haven't gotten all to far in nearly any of these games, except Persona 4, which I think I'm about 2/3rds done with (I think anyway; not using guides or anything). I'm just really finding myself engrossed with the illustrations, character design, and the music more than anything. Haven't yet decided on favorite alignments or the like, just really enjoying the rides.

I fell in love with the Shin Megami Tensei series a few years ago. I was also late to the party (Persona 3, whose artstyle was just too cool to pass up) but I've since beaten quite a few games in the global series:

SMT I-IV
Persona 1 and 3
DDS 1 and 2
Devil Survivor

I really want to beat Strange Journey and the Persona 2 games. A friend of mine just made it through Eternal Punishment and although he complained about it the whole way through, now that he beat it he tells me that it was worth it.

Nocturne was definitely my favorite game so far. I loved the gloom, the philosophy, and the dungeon design was out of this world. It's visually amazing, if you're the sort of person who appreciates art direction more than pushing your system's limits. I'm actually thinking about playing through it next as I just got it on PSN. The only ending I've seen so far is the True Demon ending and I'd like to see more.

SMT 1's soundtrack was the best so far though.

I don't really have a favorite demon, but the alignment I always get (and the correct one :p) is neutral.

And yeah, Demon Fusion is awesome. I've spent I don't know how many hours in those menus, fusing the right abilities.

Just played through both the Digital Devil Saga games.

Pretty fun games. Best played back to back as they're essentially two halves of one story.

I really liked how the games took Nocturne's press turn system and basically refined it. The story is also really well done. The second one in particular had one mindfuck of a plot twist.

Definitely recommend these two games.

Man Isamu and Chiaki treat you like absolute shit in this game

I'm actually glad you're given the option to let their plans fail, same with Hikawa. By just pointing out flaws in their arguments.
And waiting for them to turn into hideous demon hybrids and killing them

Very true. Your demons turn out to be much better friends than they ever were.

I've played and beaten:

Digital Devil Saga
Digital Devil Saga 2
Nocturne
Devil Summoner (Raidou)
Devil Summoner 2
Persona 3 FES
Persona 4

I've played but not beaten:

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment
Persona remake

Out of all of them, I'd have to say Nocturne and DDS are my favorites.

I think most everyone who's played Nocturne has fallen to Matador at least once. I knew about him ahead of time, and it still took me 2 or 3 tries to beat him.

Thankfully the Persona games taught me how important buffs generally were in the SMT games.

Games I own from the Series:
-Persona 3 FES (PS2)
-Persona 4 (PS2)
-Persona 3 Portable (PSP)
-Persona 4 Arena (PS3)
-Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS)

What I find funny about the series(and the Tales Series) is that it started as a video game adaption of a book and now has nothing to do with the source material. I wish I owned more non-persona games, but that's just how it ended up.
I never heard of that about Tales* but I am familiar with the SMT novel. I read it, it was weird thinking that this campy novel that reeks of 80s sci-fi cliches was the backbone of the series. I also played a bit of the original game as well. I seem have this habit that when I get introduced to a series, I play from the very first installment which was how I played Final Fantasy.

*Parasite Eve was also a novel first, and then a movie and then the game.

One thing that should be added is that the source material also got its own OVA.

There also exist an SMT OVA:
*Fun fact: The Wizardry series also received its own OVA as well.
