A bunch of youtubers are doing the "proximity" thing now. His audience was mostly kids with no friends, he’s a big brother-like figure who’s always there for them, never too busy to play with them, etc. It really is different having someone talk to a general audience as opposed to (what feels like) people talking to you.
To me, he was just another screaming guy who played video games.
