I was comparing the current state of Something Awful and it's place as the launching platform of the anti-Star Citizen rhetoric as ironic in the SA thread earlier when it occurred to me that both sides of this hilarious issue are operating at maximum 'tism levels without a hint of understanding just how similar they are. One side sychophantically defends a pudgy Scottish spaceman with a coke habit most assuredly measured in "Pablo's" while the other has rallied around the king of delusion, Derek "Coke Machine" Smart. Both are equally terrible and a perfect match for each other, engaging in an internet cripple fight that may just be on a scale never before realized.

Star Citizen, for those of you that have jobs, attractive sex partners and an absence on the state sex offender list is a theoretical video game originally pitched in 2012 by Chris Roberts, creator of the Wing Commander games that were immediately over shadowed by superior space sims from before and after like Elite, X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Freespace and Where in Space is Carmen San Diego?. He also made Freelancer, but instead of making it, he almost bankrupted Microsoft's game division and got kicked out on his ass for being a coked out moron with no idea what "Scope Creep" and "Intelligent engineering and project management" meant. He threw together a really cringe inducing kickstarter video for the project and got internet space autists all riled up. He got some of his buddies together after making a fast 2 mil on the campaign and started an official site for people to "pledge" to make his dream game.

Chief among these early employees was known internet deviant Ben "Bandit Loaf" Lesnick. A man obsessed with low effort internet jokes and a pretty local TV weather lady whom he kept hundreds of pictures of on his website because that's a totally uncreepy guy thing to do. Ben is also super goddamed fat to the point of looking like a midget that got a hold of some mad scientist's growth serum without realizing it wouldn't fix the proportions his dwarfism gave him. Ben is the HNIC of being Chris Roberts' toady, and also the single worst community manager to ever work for any company. By creating an echo chamber of weirdo nerds talking about pedophilia, rape and space furrism on the official RSI forums on which Star Citizen is based, he has made a community so toxic in nature you wonder if you'd have to pay $10 to be a member.

Speaking of $10, we have the opposition, Something Awful, the forum founded during the early days of the internet that was once funny, and then became the breeding ground for what would become weird twitter, a good chunk of the SJW movement and troons. Something Awful actually started pretty split about the Star Citizen project, with some goons actually investing 5 digit numbers in to the company and defending their "game" like it was a hot dog stand. But then Derek Smart stepped in, wrote a blog about how evil Star Citizen was, low effort doxx'd a few employees and started posting any and every story he heard about development regardless of source. He managed to do all this while making some very good points about the way the project had warped out of control, but he also managed to make a lot of really dumb claims and promises that got pissed back in his face a few times. This created an equally toxic community of goons who were now engaged in the retard wrassle-mania that has become reddit v. something awful by having a subreddit sprout up just to "counter troll" the goons that was equally sad in their attempts. I refuse to capitalize either name in this because it's more effort than either deserves.

But now, we have a war between the Goons, led by Derek Smart, who has done something very similar in the past to what he is rallying against, and Reddit/the official RSI forums, led by a hodge podge of pedophiles and furries where the only positive outcome seems to be suicide pacts and a cure for space-autism.

I bought this "game" a long time ago, I was a disappointed with what I got. So I deleted and moved on to elite. However I still do get the newsletter for this.

Once knew a guy who asked me to pay for one of his college textbooks only to later find out that he had sunk about $3-4K into it over the previous summer

I don't understand why people spend that much on that. I did about $45 and even then I felt cheated with what I got. Maybe I will come back to it later, when its done.
So any way here is the latest newsletter. Make of it as you will.

As an old wing commander fan who was a little excited and optimistic when star citizen was first announced 12 years ago, but has since grown wary, thank you for making this thread.

Full disclosure, I'm an idiot who gave them $100 during the kickstarter campaign due to my own space-tism. But I feel watching the moron olympics it's created has been worth the money so I don't complain

Wait Derek Smart is both still around AND has people willing to listen to him? I thought he was like MDickie and faded into the ether years ago.

Even at it's current broken as fuck never going to be finished state, Star Citizen is still a more functional product that his game, because at least SC didn't brick computers.

I became aware of these groups when I was given the prerelease game as a gift by a friend.
"It will be fun," she said. "You'll be rewarded for being in the game before it's released," she said.
She was wrong.

Both the devs and community are frighteningly toxic. A good example of this came up with how they chose to handle gift accounts. Copies of the game given as gifts are not granted the same early player bonuses as accounts you paid for yourself, despite costing the same, and being otherwise identical. Basically, if you want your friend to have the "benefits" of being an early adopter, you can't give the game to them as a birthday present. They have to spend their own money or get nothing. There's no hint of this in any of the TOS, or any message warning you about it when you buy the account for your friend.

If you try to criticize this policy, you'll be shouted down by a bunch of autistic "backers" who paid their own money for the game, and somehow they think this makes them unique and special. They can't stand the thought that people who got the game as a birthday present could be just as unique and special as they are. Eventually your post will be deleted by a moderator. The company has refused to change their stance on the "backer" policy, even though it would cost them nothing to give the same benefits to all accounts made before the release of the game, regardless of how they were purchased.

To this day there are probably thousands of Star Citizen players who were given the game as a gift, and they have no idea they're not going to get the same free items in game as everyone else on the day of release, if that ever happens.

Most space sim drama is Eve at least, and thus is a result of gameplay, not shitty devs. I could read Eve drama all day. Like an autistic Game of Thrones.

Yeah, but I was more referring to the developmental aspects. The majority of high-profile space simulation games I've seen in the past decade or so have all been heavily mired in controversy in one form or another. From Starbound to No Mans Sky, the genre seems cursed with broken promises, substandard products and developmental disasters.

honest to god, Star Citizen has them beat for drama by volume, if not quality. And to show you what I mean we're gonna have story time

This is Sandi Garnder Chris Roberts' ex and current wife. A failed actress who probably got remarried just to inflate her IMDB page to make her look like less of a failed commercial actress and more of a failed SyFy movie actress. They tried to keep their marriage a secret for the first 1-2 years to keep people from complaining about her being a producer with zero experience

Aside from crying on videos about how important Star Citizen is and bragging about her "experience" (also does not exist) and being the very best salesperson ever since she was a little girl.

She then became the company's second in command and quickly was hated by the employees as revealed in a very well made article by the Escapist for being racist, sexist and hyper angry with every single person who didn't kiss her feet. Even though the Star Citizen community wants in game rape and sex slaves, they decried sexism whenever anything negative about her was brought to light. So when one intrepid goon managed to find some of her former acting work (as verified by Pornhub under the name under the pseudonym Mae Demming on VHS in 2005.) Made funnier by the fact that the fetish porn comapny that made it had the Star Citizen lawyer in charge as the executive producer, and a performer in the video, according to some, making Chris, a tickle cuck.

Also some goon made this, which is honestly pretty goddamed hilarious

Any way after that she left twitter for like 4 weeks and paid some PR company to make twitter accounts and post #westandwithSandi and try to turn it in to how awful trolls are, when in reality she a tickle slut

What is it with the space sim community and terminal drama.

I don't get it either, but you have this in every community, even fandoms have this problem. One of two outcomes happen. Either the losers who tie they're identities in said thing get tossed out or said losers kill the community. I think my local card shop, has a no neckbeard policy. For that reason. I am sure anybody around here has had experience, with this problem.

When I saw the first announcements, teasers and trailers for Star Citizen, I was hyped as fuck, but the longer this dragged on, the more weary I got.
At this point, the game seems like a convoluted mess of gameplay aspects slapped together in a rather haphazardly way. That is not to say there's not a couple of things that look damn amazing, but in the end I can't see how this is going to work out once it gets finished - if it ever gets finished, that is.

Add to that the bullshit that is lifetime insurance, ships for several hundred bucks (just to own a different version that has a red hull), the toxic community, the drama around it and this game looks as appealing as a burning bag of dog turds.

The fact that some haters manage to be equally pathetic is really quite something, though... and the idea that Derek Smart is somehow involved in this hot mess is more than my sides can take.
How's the chances he's just jealous that SC is more successful than Battlecruiser 3000AD ever was and it hasn't even hit the market yet?

That's so incredibly autistic and petty.

It's a niche market, so it attracts Indie Devs (most of which are way too ambitious and fail to deliver) or people who made games like these in the past, however they aren't really up to the task (hello Chris Roberts). Add to that the kind of people this genre attracts (namely Sci-Fi Nerds) and it's a perfect set-up for Drama. Just mention newtonian physics and you can start a shitstorm between people who like it and people who dislike it as a game mechanic.

Went to IMDB, saw the most recent post on the message board is entitled "Tickle Porn" by a person named "Dongmonster". :story:

The craziest part is, Derek Smart has calmed down in a lot of ways since the BC3000 days and he started his crusade from a pretty good point of concern, his blog posts are just as often well reasoned and about providing accountability in kickstarter/pledge campaigns, but when he gets goons cheering him on he quickly goes in to asshole internet superstar mode and ruins any and all of the good points he was making. He literally cannot help himself

I still maintain that many of the Troon 'game devs' who specialise in VapourWare could learn a lot from Chris Roberts and his lot. The guy's a scammer of L Ron Hubbard proportions, IMO. He promised a game so huge and comprehensive that even Peter Molyneux would think twice before suggesting such a featureset. Somehow, though, he's managed to cultivate a truly rabid cult of believers. I'm not sure if his actions impress or depress me, to be honest.

As OP put, Roberts has no fucking concept of scope.

I don't know how I'm going to put together the goals I've already promised. Hey, more money came in! Let me then add even more goals I don't have a timetable for, let alone know how to accomplish!
