The harrier was purchased because it was theorized that the US would need to use pocket carriers and improvised airstrips against the Soviets is WW3 happened in Europe. We ditched the A-4, which had itself be relegated to smaller WW2 era carriers that couldn't sustain A-7's and A-6's halfway through Vietnam, and replaced the older carriers with LHAs, that didn't have catapults or arresting wires and were mainly meant to live as helicopter carriers. The Falklands War made it look like a harrier carrier could self sustain in a low intensity armed conflict, so the Pentagon went all in on the purchase, when i reality they should have just went with just enough for every LHA to get a 4 plane detachment instead of a full reinforced squadron, because in reality, the US never deploys so fast that we'd be out of the range of an actual Carrier Air Wing or the support of atleast that theater's entire compliment of Air Force assets.

The other reason is the Marines still think fucking Wake Island is gonna happen again, just like a dog that finds a piece of ham on the sidewalk during its walkies, and then inspects that exact spot everytime it sees it for the rest of its life because "hey, it happened once"

I guess it wouldn't be a USMC aircraft if it wasn't trying to murder Marines.

@Derek Smart Bootcha was supposed to do a segment on you as part of his Sunk Cost Galaxy YouTube series, but he has vanished. You were to be part 9 to be exact, and he has vanished after releasing part 7. Like him or not, you should use your powers to bother him into getting his ass back in gear and making videos for losers like the rest of us. Pleeeeeeeeease?? :)

The year is 20XX. Sunk Cost Galaxy has reached $300,000,000 in crowdfunding dollars, but has still not released its 1,000-part series on the Chris Roberts Megaplex and their solid-gold space station orbiting the Moon.

He hasn't disappeared though. He's on my Discord channel and we were chatting just the other day about appearing as guests on a fan's YT channel at some point this month. I will check with him about that EP9 thing and let you know.

This one is comedy Gold. I like how it’s always a “CTO” that makes these nonsensical posts on Reddit. This one is a 3yr old Reddit account claiming 20 yr dev experience. But yet, in 2015, he backed a project he saw was an on-going disaster.

Back in July 2015 when I wrote the infamous July Blog, I explained in clear details - as a career CTO - why the game they over-scoped could never - ever - be made. I got a lot of derision and hate for it. That was five years ago this month. In fact, I specifically said:

Without disrespect to anyone, I’m just going to say it: it is my opinion that, this game, as has been pitched, will never get made. Ever.

There isn’t a single publisher or developer on this planet who could build this game as pitched, let alone for anything less than $150 million.

The original vision which I backed in 2012? Yes, that was totally doable. This new vision? Not a chance.

The technical scope of this game surpasses GTAV, not to mention the likes of Halo.

Do you have any idea what those games cost to make and how long they took?

Do you know how many games which cost $50 million to make took almost five years to release? And they were nowhere in scope as Star Citizen?

We're now in year 9, almost $370m ($305m + $46m + $17.,5m) blown - and not only has the game deteriorated significantly, but even the tasks keep shrinking each month. To the extent that they stopped doing SQ42 schedules back in March. lmao

Since this game was announced I've replayed Heart of the Tiger and The Price of Freedom three times. Chris Roberts is a genius WHEN he's heavily shackled by a studio unwilling to bend to his whims. With access to increasingly advanced tech and an almost inexhaustible supply of idiots money I'd imagine Roberts will spend the rest of his life leading Monday meetings beginning with the words "Hey guys I've had an amazing idea!" Unfortunately his name carries a huge amount of currency with people who have played Starlancer and Freelancer and have read a ton of stuff about how great the Wing Commander series is without ever playing it.

Roberts is basically an English Kojima in this regard, like you said someone has to shackle his ass down. CIG is very obviously doing what 3D Realms did with DNF's development and we all know how that ended.

Let's be honest though, Wing Commander was always way lower quality than what LucasArts were doing with the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games. Larry Holland is incredibly underappreciated for what he managed to do

Also Strike Commander always sucked. It wasn't as good as the much older Jetfighter series and the EA made Jane's games of the same era were a thousand times better made

In terms of raw simulation quality, maybe Lucasarts had the edge but I was always a massive fan of Malcolm McDowell's performance as Admiral Tolwyn. something about the storyline of the Wing Commander series really did it for me, especially in 4 where you have a really nice branching plot and alternate endings depending on when and how you switch sides.

See, Ialways felt 4 was the weakest game. Compared to how TIE Fighter handled everything in the traitor plot it just felt so hammy and uninspired

Yeah 4 does have its problems but I still love it. I found the crispiest, mintiest copy on eBay, like this thing looks like it was literally taken out of the cellophane an hour ago. It lives in a protective sleeve and I'm probably going to get a proper plastic over shell for it. Naturally I have a scruffy disc only version which I actually play. Disappointingly the GoG version sucks, I literally can't get past the first gunfight because the handling is so diabolical.

@Luggers I'm just browsing through the Attire page for gymnitai and have you seen the fucking GUT on the dude modelling the shirt?
