The Tales of Series -

Anyone else into this series. If so, what is your favorites, least favorite or whatnot?

My introduction to this series was Symphonia, a game I really enjoyed. I got Tales of the Abyss on 3DS afterwards and stopped at some point. (I might start a new game someday) I been playing Tales of Xillia lately so I can get the sequel. I hear a lot of good things about the sequel so I'm looking forward of trying it out.

I've played Tales of Phantasia(SFC, PS1, and GBA versions), Tales of Symphonia(Gamecube), Tales of Symhonia Dawn of a New World(Wii), Tales of Legendia(PS2), and Tales of the Abyss(PS2 and 3DS versions). Phantasia is my personal favorite, especially the SFC version on the simple account it was way ahead of its time with both visuals and sound effects(Voice Acting and a Song with vocals on a SNES game is really something else, the game itself used a cartridge with a storage size so big it was only used for one other game(Star Ocean)).

I've been a Tales fan ever since Symphonia. Namco Bandai is an incredibly sleazy company, but I'll always love battling dragons and demons and angelic figures in real time amongst a party with an actual sense of humor and ending as many enemy lives as possible. It makes even the stupid parts of each games plots tolerable.

One day I'd like to get a hold of the PS3 version of Vesperia. Yuri Lowell's the best protagonist the series ever had, Judith is the sexiest chick the series ever had, and Duke is my favorite end-boss in the series. It's be nice to experience all this in the version that wasn't rushed out.

I only played ToS wayback on the GameCube, but I do remember really enjoying it. Might grab the PC version one day.

Me too. I'm fully aware it's been surpassed in gameplay quality by every game in the series released since, and the second third of the game drags like a motherfucker, but I have a lot of affection for Lloyd and the gang.

I was gonna get the PS3 version, but they replaced the awesome orchestral opening from the English version with the original godawful J-Pop song from the Japanese version.

I've enjoyed the Tales of series as well. So is the one that came out last month any good, because I've heard quite a few negative reviews?

I've enjoyed it so far, but there are some valid complaints with the game.

A lot of people were pissed that Princess Alisha isn't a regular party member in spite of the advertisement, which I've found pretty spergy. They also hate the DLC focus, which is entirely legitimate. Then there's the English voice acting, which sucks, but at least you can use the Japanese audio in this game. And there's the camera, which given the perspective change, is sometimes buggy. But I haven't found it to be deal-breaker buggy like with a lot of N64 or PSX games.

As for the other issues, I haven't made it far enough to comment yet, but I don't regret my fifty dollars at all so far.

I decided to get it and while it took a while to get used to things, I found myself liking it. I had no problems with the voice acting (then again, Japanese animation voices sound kind of the same to me) and the characters were likable enough. It was worth the money I shelled out for it.

Can you add eternal sonata to that list?

It’s not a true tales of game, but it was pretty cool and made by most of the same people.

While I liked Eternal Sonata overall, that game was SLOOOOOOOOW. There were so many cutscenes that could've taken half the time they took to get the message across but instead, let's put all the characters in a room and take half a minute to say a sentence so someone else can take another half-minute to agree and repeat the sentence. No music. Sure was pretty-looking, though.

My personal favourite is Tales of Vesperia; it's the only one I've played where I like ALL of the party members, which is rare.

My favorite will probably always be Eternia. I like A-LMBS too much, everything flows really nice and there's no awkward 3D free-running bullshit like in Symphonia or Abyss. They kind of got it together with Vesperia but then moved on to whatever the fuck Hearts and Xillia used.

I think Zestiria gets way too much shit and Berseria isn't much better, though Velvet is great and basically is the only thing keeping my interest in the game at the moment, though I am curious what they're going to do now that Hideo Baba's out. Hopefully they work on their plot writing, since the worldbuilding is typically on point.

Still pissed we didn't get Destiny Director's Cut on the PS2 over here. And I'd like it if they'd remake or re-release Phantasia again or do a collection of PSX Full Voice Phantasia, PS2 Destiny DX, and Eternia. The GBA version Phantasia is slow as fuck to the point of almost being unplayable.
