The Tales of Series -

Couple months apart double post 🤔

So, after all the years of hearing about Vesperia being one of the very best Tales games, I have to heartily disagree after playing it again. It takes hours to get fun combos to chain, the story flies off the rails, and most of the characters are just eh. (Rita is a complete bitch)
Hearts R is better, Berseria is better, Abyss is better, hell, even Zestiria is more fun for pick up and play and it's so-bad-it's-good quality makes it more engaging.
Tales has surpassed Vesperia and some of the games older than it are more fun and engaging. Vesperia has a neat dynamic between Flynn and Yuri, but it's not teh best Tales gaem eber.

also: Tales of Arise anybody?

Tales of arise finally looks something different graphically, like taking the next step the series needs.

tales of symphonia was my second JRPG i ever played (first being FFX) and the first i finished on the gamecube. i remember seeing a trailer in glorious 240 on some shity website and still being blown away with how amazing it looked. i like this kind of games since it let me escape reality for a time and be part of this great adventure too save the world with characters with their own personalities and dreams. been playing the series ever since and symphonia is still my favorite next too abyss ,vesperia and graces F. felt like the series has been going down hill since zestiria but i hope the success of vesperia definitive edition will take the series on a better path.

I recently went back to play Symphonia since it was my favorite Tales after Vesperia.

It's uhh... not great. Game did not age well sadly although I still love it. It's like a 5.5 - 6/10 for me now and I mostly love it for the cheesy dialogue me and my brother still quote to this day.

Also I replayed Vesperia afterwards and it was great, still holds up really well. Aside from Patty though the extra content is padded out garbage and I do not recommend it.

Tfw missed updates on this thread because my buddy read it and cleared the alert.

Maybe it's because I played Symphonia over and over as a teen, but I never got that aged feeling even when I played it last year. I tend to feel more like I'm still experiencing it as it was when it was new to me, and Symphonia has such significance to me personally, I can't hold its age against it.

The only thing I didn't like about playing it on the PS3 was the changes carried over from the PS2 version, like not being able to cancel out of spells if you have low TP, or the atrociously halved framerate.

That's strange, I would say I feel exactly the opposite to you regarding symphonia and vesperia. Symphonia drove me crazy with its retarded 'everything needs to be spelled out and then repeated twice' approach to dialogue, the idea of playing it again seems like an unbearable chore.

Despite the hype I found myself not caring as much about the characters as I did in the others.

I got Symphonia at the impressionable age of about 8, and I didn't have that many other video games. I played it so much I could have recited a majority of the game when I was in the phase of playing it through at least once a week, and most of the voice clips have planted themselves somewhere in my memory.

A lot of the ideas presented in the game, like Lloyd not giving up on Colette when he learned about her Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium
btw, its very convenient they never give the name of her disease a voiced line, and the skit where Kratos says "there are always those who reject salvation" have stayed with me.

I also subconsciously copied the character's talking animations whenever I talked.

I love Symphonia a lot, but I still don't get a feeling of a game being aged when I play older games. I try and be forgiving with vidya but it's like the idea of age doesn't even strike me.

Vesperia is still very good, but half the cast isn't interesting to me and the third act has tons of issues. Meanwhile, Symphonia's cast has mostly remained consistently likable to me, the game's story only gets better as it gets closer to the end, and Mithos is probably the best Tales villain.

Abyss is still my favorite, though, and I doubt that will change. Destiny also holds a special place in my heart.

Legendia was the first Tales game I played, then Abyss, Vesperia (many years later), and Berseria. They’re all pretty good in their own ways.

Out of all of those, Abyss is still my favourite overall, with Berseria being second. I need to actually finish it one of these days, but I can’t be fucked to do it.

Tales of Arise has been delayed from 2020 to an undetermined date. Thanks 'rona.

Sounds like they may be pursuing a global release date.

Been a fan since the original Tales of Destiny on PS1. Tales of Destiny DC is the best 2d entry in the franchise and Tales of Graces f absolutely has the most fun and smooth gameplay of them all.

In terms of Arise, I expected a delay, but I feel if anything we should have a new trailer or an actual gameplay demo (even if it's a test build). They've really been keeping people in the dark, and with the game originally expected to come out this year you would think by now we would have had more to it. Crestoria (the mobile gacha game) has also been delayed so I'm just curious what they're going to do for the future announcements.

If I had to recommend a product for them to make they should absolutely have a Tales of Destiny Chronicles With ToD DC hopefully and the real ToD2. Over in the US all we honestly got for good 2D games was Eternia and Legendia (Only for the OST). Really hope we get more so people can appreciate those games.

Finally finished Tales of Berseria and now going back to Tales of Zesteria after a gap of around 3 years. In a weird kind of way Zesteria, it's graphics aside feels like a better game technically but the storyline seems poor. I consider the 2 games companion pieces, though so it will be interesting to play TOZ in view of the background of TOB.

From a technical stand point it's not a better game because the armor and gear system is complete fucking ass and how you're supposed to stack and match skills is garbage and poorly explained.

Maybe the aesthetics then, I still like the little explanations for each enemy in tales of Zesteria. I'll most likely go back to Tales of Symphonia when I have the time.

I prefer to not view Zesty and Besty as companion pieces because of how much better Berseria is on all fronts and they're so tangentally related and Berseria does not lead up to Zestiria well at all. In the context of Berseria, Zestiria does not explain Maotelus well and the plotpoint of Eizen becoming a dragon makes no sense whatsoever.

My biggest thing about comparing the games is that in Zestiria I avoided as many encounters as possible and was horrified of getting into linked encounters; in Berseria I actively sought out linked encounters and loved playing battles.

Nah, the fusion system by itself makes the game shit. It's pretty much mandatory for fights because how stats scale when fused, meaning you are limited to only two fighters with very little actual variety and tactics.
