The Tales of Series -

I was introduced to the series by a friend who loved Tales of Symphonia. I played through the game several times, I loved the story and had a ton of fun with the combat system. If I had to pick a few select games that defined my childhood, Symphonia would absolutely be on that list. My love for that game led me to seek out Tales of Phantasia, which I also enjoyed.

I was really, really into Tales of the Abyss. Much for the same reason as Symphonia - great story, fun combat. Luke and Asch are some of my favourite characters in the entire 'Tales of' series. I don't know if it is heralded as one of the best 'Tales of' games, but it's my personal favourite. That could just be the nostalgia talking, though. I need to sit down and play the 3DS version to see if it has aged as well as I remember it.

I liked Tales of Vesperia, but I felt that the other characters fell flat in comparison to Yuri. Yuri is hilarious. I've only played through it once however, and that was a few years ago. I imagine if I played it again I would feel differently about the other characters.

I stopped playing halfway through Tales of Zesteria. I don't know why, I remember being bored with it at one point. It deserves a full play through before I can properly judge it though. One of these days I will download it back onto my PS4 and give it another whirl.

I've never played the second Tales of Symphonia game. From what I've heard, it's a pretty average game with some atrocious voice acting.

Xillia 1 and 2 are close to the top of good tales games but they're still only on the PS3. Now those you can view as companion games since they directly follow each other and expand what was established.

Graces is another good Tales game but it's not as good as Tales of Hearts R. Graces f is still only on the PS3 and Hearts R is still only on the Vita.

I dunno where bandai is going holding out on people when they could get the older titles translated. I mean they did a good job with the Vesperia re-release, they needed to follow it up.

I'm still bummed that Tales of Destiny R's fan translation got stalled and destroyed after the leader of the group went through a mental breakdown. I would love to play through the original games but I've always held back from the PS1 titles since the skits were deleted. Two of the PS2 titles have never been translated either.

It is an okay game, the "monster control" thing was sort of janky from what I remember and the main character was absurdly overpowered to make up for the fact that 2/4 of your party members were sort of hobbled monsters.

I got into this series with Symphonia as a kid and it's one of the few games I own that I replayed as much as I did, like 5 times probably. I'm glad a bunch of these are getting ported to steam now too.

Speaking of the older games, I still find it kinda sad and funny that the only official tales of Phantasia translation the west has gotten is for possibly the shittiest version. I say possibly cause it does have more bonus content than the SNES one but there's still a downgrade in the sound department at least.

None of the bonus content makes up for the massive slowdown during battles, the game can barely run on the GBA due to poor optimization. There also were many translation errors, like calling the ultimate weapon for Cress the Kangaroo Sword.

If you want the bonus content, the PS1 version of the game was fan translated(If you are wondering why there are no obvious sex jokes in the PS1 version like the SNES fan translation, those were pretty much added by the SNES translator and were not in the original Japanese script). The best version is the PSP version, but last I checked it never was fan translated.

Yeah that's pretty much what I gathered. I played the GBA version at a time before I was knowledgeable about emulation and fanpatches and that sort of stuff and then later I found out more about all the different versions out there and the fanpatches. Apparently the most recent version of the game is rerelease that includes a remake of Narikiri dungeon so I'd like to get that at some point when my japanese is better.

I really ruined Xilia for myself when I picked Milla as a main character and spoiled the last 1/4 of the game. Second game is fantastic though, might very well be the best Tales game I played (despite reusing most of the previous game assets).
I didn't really enjoy Tales of Hearts that much, I think I just left it unfinished over lack of interest.

Hearts R is really short. my second playthrough skipping all stories took me like 4-5 hours.

The only Tales game I've ever beat is Hearts R on the Vita and I loved it. I felt like a proper old school RPG (I was quite happy to get an airship let's say), but with a decent number of modern refinements.

Bandai put out a Survey asking what Tales of games do you want ported over to new hardware, this includes all the Tales titles even the ones that were never translated into burger scribbles.
It would be nice to see a release on the current/next gen of consoles, but a lot of the underappreciated JP only portable games are probably going to be ignored.

I think Hearts R will probably get ported since it's the last of the Vita exclusive games to not get a port.

They may combine a bunch of games together and release them in a compilation. I could see that happening.
