Courtesy of the trashfire that is the Jack Scalfani thread, a user posted a particular video on how to make a Journey Cake. What's a Journey Cake? Well, it's a simple unleavened bread you can pan fry:

I thought this was kind of cool; some guy was able to casually outcook Fat Jack in a hobo shack with old recipes from that time. I also saw a few more cool recipes this guy came out with which includes the following:

Here's how to make pocket soup, basically a cheap way to make instant-stock if you want to store some:

Want to both wake up and eat something? Have some Coffee Eggs!

Need to make an oven because something something apocalypse?

Feel free to make some salted meat fit for the Continental Army:

Stale bread? Fuck that turn it into pudding:

Wanna make an old fashioned beer? Here you go:

Ran out of ketchup for your fries? Worry not, dig up some mushrooms bro:

And to top it all off... part one on how to make the ULTIMATE NUTRILOAF:

I actually love this guy's work; he just wants to show off his passion for the late colonial and revolutionary period in the US and Europe with his kid. I also love all the weird recipes and ideas that were lost as we continued to advance as a society. Lastly, you're welcome Doomers, here's some how-to foods for your apocalypse. Feel free to show off more old timey recipes too, because that shit gets weird or cool.

This dude got me on to making whole baked onions from this video. Delicious and super simple, they loose all their vegetal bite and pungent aroma and just become sweet. If you modernize it it's even better, just slice off the top, wrap it in tin foil, dump whatever spices you want and put a pat of butter on top, then close the wrap and bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Recipe: https://thecookful.com/baked-vidalia-onion/ The juice at the bottom when you unwrap it is awesome too. You can do all kinds of things with it like make your own onion dip or something.
Also this video from last winter is like the comfiest video ever. In the log cabin he built he makes a hot spiced ale-creamed egg-rum drink by his fireplace.

ETA: Oh, yeah, his Mushroom Ketchup recipe is amazingly delicious. That video is a must watch.

I love the show but this is nothing new. In every country in this world and even to this day, you have to make due with what you have.. I not bashing this show, I'm actually praising this as this concept of cooking was carried all the way to my grandparents. Before refrigeration and even before the use of the light bulb. I saw those types of pots and pans. So I remember this style of cooking. I've learn a lot from that generation.

This is how I got myself out of a miserable existence. By listening to my past generations who made it out of theirs.
I saved a lot of money by cooking myself and some of the recipes are here on site.

This is an outstanding show as it shows what you can do with left overs.

Really dig this guys work. It's actually really fascinating to see the origins of so many of our modern day dishes. It's also important for skills like these to be remembered too. We rely so much on high technology to do things, to the point without remembering stuff like this we leave ourselves open to a big fall if we lose it for any length of time.

The guy does a lot of work to give you the historical context of why foods were made that way, which is a big part of the appeal. Nothing but good stuff to say about him.

I also purchased some of that mushroom ketchup from them, they sell it in bottles. Good stuff.

My personal favorite:

Plus an in-depth, comfy exploration on how to roast beef simply:

The whole boomer “orange fool” drama was pretty amusing tbh.

He seems like a genuinely kind person :)

I liked this channel despite the guy looking like someone I know and do not get along with, until the "orange fool" thing. I think it would have been okay if he had ignored it, but doing a video to Address The Issue and scold everyone left a bad taste in my mouth (so to speak.)
