Seeing as this area is starting to pick up I thought it would be handy to keep a list of the most essential thread's for people just joining the fun, and for old timers looking for a reference guide.

Part 1, Understanding Tumblr an Tumblrina's;

Bestiary of SJWs.
A very good introductory field spotters guide for Tumblrina's.

Tumblr to English Dictionary.
Tumblr is a place the English language goes to die, words are miss used twisted beyond all recognition, let this be your guide.

A General guide to Tumblr.
A very useful guide to understanding Tumblr an it's relationship to the rest of the internet.

Tumblr economics
.
Tumblr has a economy, based on who is the least priviladged, this guide was written by our very own @Jaimas a Gentleman who has earned his PHD in Tumblrology studying a particularly vile denizen of Tumblr.

Part 2, Known Denizens.

Tumblr is a weird place, and the people who stand out really are the Turd's that have floated to the Surface of the swamp.

Vade.
From the Wiki said:
Vade, also known by her Steam and secondary listing alias of Vafurous, is a Tumblr blogger with possible sociopathic tendencies. Born female, but having changed her gender an innumerable number of times, she requests people use a myriad of admittedly made-up pronouns. Highly narcissistic, she lashes out at anyone who criticizes her while hiding behind the five or more faces of her natural multiplicity. Largely incapable of empathy, and in lieu of actual friends, has a close-knit group of associates she exploits whilst asserting a distressing amount of indirect control over their lives.

She is most notable for her responsibility in one of Tumblr's most infamous harassment communities.

You can find her full Wiki here, and her Thread here.

Springtrapp.

They list hundreds of fictives, kintypes, and headmates, as well as about a dozen self-diagnosed mental illnesses and, of course, her own made-up genders. Springtrapp is Tumblr incarnate.

You can find her thread here.

This section is constantly evolving if you think you have spotted a floater, please let me know and once they have a thread I will gladly update this list.

Part the Third, Documenting the lulz.

Sadly Tumblr allows people to delete thing's from posts to whole blogs so it is a good idea to document it as you go.
Our fearless leader @Null made a thread about this in the lolcow general that bares repeating here;
The tool of a Lolcow is deleting fucking everything when they get found out.
The tool of a nerd is to record fucking everything before that happens.

archive.md
creates a full, living backup of a website with all its resources. (example)
full page screen capture is a fucking wonderful Chrome extension that automatically caps, records, compiles, and sends you a lossless PNG of exactly what you see. It doesn't interact with anything on the page and takes only a second to use. (example)

This is a standard we're using on the http://lolcow.wiki, but it's good if everyone does it. Links to 3rd party websites are rarely a good idea unless you're actually trying to show people the URL, and not its content.

I've also added a ton of automatic media embedding features. Twitter links and Imgur galleries also embed fine. Do not, however, rely on these as Backups. Imgur is OK, but they do oblige takedown requests. Twitter content belongs to their author and simply embedding it won't always work

This is a excellent set of tools that are very easy to use, however if you would like a more general use tool to take screenshot's @Meowthkip recently recommended;
Gyazo.
This is at the time of writing a free utility that is available on Windows, Mac an Linux and is currently free of charge and feature rich.

Another service recomended by @BirdSim is puush.
Description of Puush's functionallity said:
Use keyboard shortcuts or drag-drop gestures to quickly capture any portion of your screen. These screenshots are near-instantly puush'd, leaving behind a short URL in your clipboard, perfect for sharing. Paste these easily into your Twitter, IRC or IM clients. Share them with the world or make them private, for your eyes only.

The best practice you can follow is, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING AS YOU FIND IT! however if you need to engage in some digital archaeology the Wayback Machine is great however your milage may vary and not all media is archived things like large pictures and video files are not recorded.
