So i realise most of you autists would have been obsessed with trains as wee boys and girls but as a child i used to love tanks- one of my favourite games was a terrible 90's game called wargasm where you drove around in a tank to Tchaikovsky's music and shot other blocky polygon tanks.

for whatever reason i never found the time to get into any of the modern games but i just downloaded war thunder- what are people's opinions? anyone into this kinda game? fancy some kiwi armoured warfare?!

I've heard mostly positive (or at least not-too-negative) things about World of Tanks when the nerd circles I run in turn to tank discussion.

I played WoT beta and loved the shit out of it with one huge exception.

The fuckin Arty!

They call it the Ion Cannon since you get a top down view of the map and the ability to 1 shot most tanks without them being able to do anything about it.

Despite all the negative feedback they went ahead and implemented it because some 70% of thier players played Arty exclusively. Hell some games got as bad as 4 tanks per side with 8 Arty, it was ridiculous. But they gave put a cap on the number of Arty units per match now so it's usually 50/50

World of tanks sucks bad and warthunder is on the same path, sadly.
Also the russian bias on both games is horrible, and there are rumours of a rigged matchmaking on wot.

A decent tank sim is steel beasts pro and steel armor blaze of war.
Steel beasts is 150$,but its a complete sim, used by NATO armies, and it costs the same as 3 premium tanks in wot.
Steel armor is 20$ and has a decente simulation of the t 62 and m60 tanks, with more via mods and updates.

I made a thread on this a while back, but it didn't get a great deal of traffic: https://kiwifarms.net/threads/world-of-tanks.3494/

I love WoT and play regularly. War Thunder is fun enough, but they tinker a lot and usually break more things than they fix. Really looking forward to World of Warships getting out of beta.

They've toyed with things a lot, and struck a pretty good balance now. Arty is still lethal if you're a camper, but campers deserve to be blown sky-high anyway.

I'm afraid im a filthy casual who just wants to race around in a tank for a few hours going pew pew. :S unless it supports user made cosmetic skins?

do you still play? does WoT support guilds/clans/whatever? im sure we could bully some kiwis into becoming thread heads.

I do play regularly still, yes. The hardest part of playing WoT with kiwis is that the regional servers make it impossible to play with people from different countries. Americans can only play with Americans, and Euros have to stick with themselves.

I don't think so. I think it's a limitation of having everyone linked at once. You can't have anyone playing with any real lag or it ruins it for their whole team.

You probably can mod it,and you can easily play steel armor,i went from wot to it in no time.
Its a hard but fun game, with a strategy element to it.
Sadly its single player only.
I recomend that you play warthunder tank mode
But please dont go to the German tech tree.
German tanks are really bad in later tiers, especially vs is4s and t 54s

I loved my Pz 2/3, fully up-graded she was a speedy and dangerous tank with a solid gun that could kill bigger tanks from the rear.

I racked up so many Arty kills with it,

My 2nd choice was always the Panther with the 88mm gun and 128mm sloped armour. Problem with this tank was the second I got sighted everyone would blast away at me to try to get part of the credits for the kill. Even with the armour I rarely made any money driving my Panther.

One thing that might be fun for the thread is posting our replays. If we can't play together, we can at least enjoy each other's triumphs/hilarious embarrassments.

I think that be solid, I might not play anymore but I'd love to see some hot tank on tank bareback action!

As you might guess from my profile pic of the Sabre pilot from War Thunder, I have a taste for the Korean War jet combat. It's not perfect representation of real life 1950s jet combat, but to me it's more cost effective than shilling out 100 USD for a joystick and DCS: F-86F or DCS: MiG-15bis.

I tried the WoT and War Thunder tanks and they are ok, but really I stick around the franchise for the jet combat. It's far more intense and strategy/skill-based than tank warfare, where luck and RNG has a greater role in determining the outcome of an individual combat. But at the same time, jet combat requires sharper reflexes than propeller aircraft combat due to the far higher closing speeds forcing you to make critical split-second decisions on the fly, so there's still an element of unpredictability that can make or break a match and add to the adrenaline rush.

Jesus that tank was crazy. The AT8 makes me cringe with the guns you start with. I miss the AT2 now.

I went all the way up to the AT-7, then abandoned the line. Re-bought the AT-2 and loved it again. I don't think there's much fun to be had in the tiers between it and the Tortoise.

The Firefly is fun as all hell. It's a travesty that WoT took so long to include it.

Been doing the Warships beta, which just transitioned into Open Beta (not actually open yet, just the final wipe happened, NDA lifted, and real world xp gains are in instead of the hyper xp of closed beta) so I sadly am starting from scratch again. However thanks to the humble bundle deal and not wanting the premium ships, I at least have far more than enough garage slots to keep me ok for the next 2 country releases in the future. 10 slots left with only 2 more

Favoring the American line to the Jap line, and the big Battleships to the Cruisers and Destroyers, (grinding to my Aircraft Carrier waifu) and I think this one picture explains why.

The guns on that son of a bitch turn so slowly it's actually a better strategy to attempt to bring the whole ship around if they're on the opposite side, and even then that takes ages.

EDIT: Looks like we are officially in Open Beta now, at least for the NA server.

Hmmm I'm so tempted to try Warships, I do love me some good old fashion battleship action.

I played a lot of Navyfeild and I do kinda miss it.
