Colin Kaepernick is among the notable free-agent NFL players who did not take the field over the weekend during the XFL’s first week, which featured all of its eight teams in action.

XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck told NPR on Saturday that the league spoke with Kaepernick’s representatives about the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback joining the league but the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement on salary demands – something which Luck has said in the past.

“We gave it some thought,” Luck said. “We have some pretty significant salary restrictions, you know. We're a start-up league, so we want to make sure that we can be fiscally responsible and fiscally prudent. And the, you know, salary requirements that some folks, you know, shared with us were in our case exorbitant, so we, you know, couldn't go down that path.”

He added: “We spoke with his representative and the salary requirements that were broached in that conversation were exorbitant and certainly out of our range.”

Luck said he wasn’t sure whether the league would change its stance on Kaepernick if he lowered his salary demands.

He also touched on the league's stance on protests during the national anthem. The league requires all of its players to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

“Players have numerous opportunities to express themselves with all the platforms that exist today,” Luck said. “So, you know, standing for the national anthem we believe is a part of their responsibility as players in our league. But we think it's important to have that -- you know, that requirement for our players.”

Kaepernick had a workout for a handful of NFL teams late last year. However, it generated no offers from any NFL teams. It’s unclear whether another showcase will happen in 2020.

With the nation’s newest pro football league fairly off the ground, some are wondering why Colin Kaepernick isn’t playing for the new XFL. The answer, is typically Kaepernickian.

So, why isn’t Kaepernick gearing up for the XFL? It appears his salary demands priced him right out of the market from the word “go.”

From reports last year, the XFL actually reached out to Kaepernick to see if he might be interested in playing for the new league.

Last year, XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck noted that the XFL reached out to Kaepernick, but the former NFL player asked for an out sized $20 million a season salary. And in a league whose top pay is only $500,000 a season, that is just a touch higher than the league can float. As he has in so many other cases, Colin Kaepernick torpedoed his own chances.

“I think his salary demands are way out of our ballpark,” Luck said when asked about the possibility of Kaepernick joining the league. “He was never really a viable option.”

Still, as Sporting News noted, even if Kaepernick’s salary demands were in line with what the XFL could offer, there is the question of Kaepernick’s anti-American protests.

One of the very first things XFL Owner/CEO Vince McMahon did when he began planning the resurgence of the XFL was to announce that he would tolerate no protests in his new football league.

“People don’t want social and political issues coming into play when they are trying to be entertained,” McMahon told ESPN in 2017. “We want someone who wants to take a knee to do their version of that on their personal time.”

McMahon followed that up by saying he felt it would be “appropriate” for the league to make a rule requiring players to stand for the anthem.

“It’s a time-honored tradition to stand and appreciate the national anthem with any sport. Here in America — for that matter, in any country…so I think it’d be appropriate to do that,” he said.

McMahon’s concept may have been challenged by including Kaepernick.

Well, as McMahon said: " “We want someone who wants to take a knee to do their version of that on their personal time.”

Kaep's got all the time in the world to stay on his knees for big daddy Nike to pay him for his 'services'

And his big daddy Nike built his shoes in China by people who got 25¢ per hour. :story:

I guess the XFL dodged a bullet with Kaepernick.

Being a midwest bumpkin, I naturally chose the Battlehawks. How well do you guys think they can fill the dome? I hope they sell out all their games just as a giant "fuck you" to Kroenke.

They'll show up if they keep doing well. It might take some years to fill the stadium to capacity, as I don't think most want to get too involved in a league until it's committed to more than a few seasons.

One of the ways the XFL was able to differentiate itself from the NFL was to allow live microphones on the coaches, giving us access to their play-calling decisions live on the air.

On one hand, it's great access for fans of the new football league. It provides an insight into what the coaches are thinking, and it's cool to hear them talk about the play before it happens. On the other hand, it leaves coaches exposed, and it sounds like they weren't quite prepared for it.

D.C. Defenders coach Pep Hamilton coached his team to victory in the XFL's first game, and when he watched a replay of the game the next day, he realized just how much information was made public. He told "The Sports Junkies" on Washington radio station WJFK-FM he had to change things up for the rest of the season.

"I've been up overnight trying to change some of the calls. I think everybody in D.C. knows by know that 'even' is [running] to the right and 'odd' is to the left. So 3.3 million people know whether we're running to the right or running to the left," Hamilton said earlier this week, referring to the television audience for the game. "We knew that would be a factor, but not until I watched the broadcast late [Sunday] night where I said, 'Oh, man. We got to do something different.'"

Seattle Dragons coach Jim Zorn added, via the Seattle Times, he was "absolutely shocked" when he realized how much audio of him calling plays was shown on the TV broadcast.

“I think it gave a fan a chance to hear and see something they’ve never heard before, but I felt very exposed,” Zorn said. "Information on a football team has to be guarded a little bit, so we just got it right out there. I know it had to be fun for everybody, but not super fun for me to reveal all that stuff. But I was glad I didn't stutter or fumble the play calls."

Zorn was lightly teased on social media because he could be seen covering his mouth to hide his play while the audio could be heard.

While Hamilton was a little surprised by how much access fans were given, he's still on board with the league putting microphones on the coaches.

"It's part of it," he said. "It's all about the fans. We want to give the viewers access to professional football in a way they've never had."

Dallas Renegades coach Bob Stoops had a similar reaction when asked about the overall access provided to fans.

"I was ready for it," Stoops said during his press conference Sunday. "Hey, I'm in here to do my part, to help the league in any way I can, so that means participating differently than I had before. Yeah, there's people everywhere — locker room, following you around — so, hey, I get it. I enjoyed watching it (Saturday), the little bit I got to see. Hearing the play calls, the interviews. It's great access for people that are interested in it. I think it will just help continue to grow."

It'll be interesting to see moving forward whether the XFL continues to provide as much access with regard to play-calling as it did in Week 1. With a pair of coaches commenting on it publicly, it wouldn't be a surprise if some others expressed concerns privately to those in the league.

It’s currently projected to have 28,000 seats sold in the dome. They only have the lower bowl open for tickets so take that as you will. Ticket Master only has these sections (colored in) left for single ticket purchases. And at most it’s 1-9 seats still available in each section.

As for buying two tickets up front. It’s about the same. Seats are still available on the visitor side but surprisingly it’s almost filled up.

Now this is all subject to change depending on how the Battle Hawks do against the Roughnecks this weekend.

Edit. I forgot about season ticket seats. The entire Battle Hawk side of the stadium is basically sold out for season ticket seats. About 1-2 seats in the 45-45 yard mark and the rest have about 4-5 seats. There are a ton for the away team side.

Edit 2. I got bored and went through the available tickets for the weekend.

If they can get to a point where they can start opening up the upper bowls (For all the teams in NFL venues, not just the B'Hawks), they'll be in good shape. IIRC the Commanders had no problems filling up the Alamodome. Too bad the AAF fucked up as bad as they did, afraid they may have turned off those cities to the idea of hosting another non-nfl football team.

True but we will have to see near the end of the season if they can keep a fan base going. If whatever the name of the XFL championship stadium is empty then this might be a one or two year season.

Edit.
The New York at DC is empty as hell, but I just checked online and there are very few seats available to purchase, could be the weather as it’s 36 degrees.

Edit Edit: Never mind there is a fair amount of people there. Must have took a bit for everyone to get in.

Judging by this game, I guess the rally cheese is the Guardian’s source of power. That, or this shit just happens whenever Matt McGloin runs into a secondary that can put up a fight.

I thought that the quarterback play was really NOT GOOD today ... Save for Cardale Jones (the DC Defenders QB).

Let's hope that Sunday's games give us something more.
