Sadly, denial of the Armenian genocide is all too common among Turkish people.
It can be punishable by law to recognize the Armenian Genocide under an interpretation of Article 301. Erdogan actually recognized it at one point, before flipping 180 degrees and denying it, and later downplaying what coined the term "genocide" as an "incident." Oh, and billboard space was rented at Times Square advertising a phony website claiming Turks were the victims, and justifying stealing land and rounding them up for deportation, but beheading, crucifying, and/or lynching them instead.

It's true a lot of people don't know about the Armenian Genocide to make critical judgement, but Cenk clearly was versed enough by his article's tone and the fresh shit which came out about it at the time following the collapse of the Iron Curtain. He's doesn't want to properly refute what he said twenty-five years ago because he's a smug asshole who like all libtards, believes he's smarter than anybody else and wants to keep his sheep audience.

Which genocide does he deny? I'm guessing the Armenian genocide?

YES. THAT SPECIFIC GENOCIDE.

Why is it okay to deny this specific genocide?

I'm not sure.

It's not in my ethics rulebook, though. If you deny the murder of millions of people based on their ethnicity, in my PERSONAL book, you are a PIECE OF SHIT.

If your group is calling itself "The Hitler Youth" it wouldn't be in your interest to talk about how Hitler did some fucked up stuff. Of course this raises the simple question of why the fuck are you calling yourself "The Hitler Youth"?

In the decade before the Armenian Genocide, the historical Young Turks were seen by many in the West as an energetic group of radically effective secular modernizers who were breathing life into the sickly corpse of the crumbling Ottoman Empire. Thus, in various Western political, industrial, and military circles in the early 20th century, likeminded groups of reformist and modernist individuals who made waves within their respective disciplines were often branded as "Young Turks" in a kind of complimentary way. In time, "Young Turks" came to be used as a somewhat flattering appellation for any group of influential anti-establishment revolutionaries in any field or discipline, without political or ethnic connotations to the historical Young Turks. The term's non-historical usage waned over time, but I would argue it's still a fairly recognizable turn of phrase.

So Genocide aside, it was actually a clever pun for Cenk to call his media project "The Young Turks", and that would be totally fine if he just came out in the open and admitted as much. If he just said that it's a stupid pun and he disavows the historical Young Turks, nobody would have any moral ground to stand over him keeping the name, but he has a stick up his ass about the Genocide, so it'll never happen.

I disagree. Cenk and TYT constantly espouse the exact kind of idiotic identity politics in lieu of actual policy that cost the Democrats the election this year, and even on their election night coverage Jimmy and Cenk were the only ones who really started to get mad at the neoliberal wing of the party for throwing the election to keep Hillary. Everyone else, including Ana and the token Mexican whose name I can't be assed to remember, stuck to the same "fuck white people, fuck blue collar workers, if you voted Trump you're a moron" rhetoric that cost them the election.

And in wake of that election Cenk is leading the charge alongside the entire rest of his network (except Jimmy Dore in his brief moments of lucidity) in doubling down on that kind of rhetoric and continuing to demonize anyone who disagrees with progressive orthodoxy as a hateful cult of backwards, gun-toting, bible-thumping Deliverance extras whose sole motivation in life is the reinstatement of slavery and establishing a Christian theocracy.

He may be good at telling when his goose is cooked, but he's utter rubbish at understanding why.

Oh I'm not disagreeing that he's part of the identitarian cult, i find his important rage at both the left and the right hilarious.

I was just remarking that underneath his ideology he seems to be a fairly intelligent person.

imo it's okay to deny any and all genocides because if we make genocide too great an enormity to question, people will just make up fake genocides all the time because people are naturally duplicitous assholes.

Obviously though if your only argument that the genocide didn't happen is "yeah but I don't like the race of the people who got zapped" you're a racist piece of shit and shouldn't be holding yourself up as a champion of the progressive movement.

He certainly can be intelligent but he's so Turkish that it hurts.

I don't even know what that means but it makes sense. Cenk Uyger is the most Turkish man ever

The Armenian and Assyrian genocides were part of Turkey's transformation from the Ottoman empire, a mixture of various groups of people including Turks, to Turkey, a state defined by the Turks and the Turks alone. The current agitations with the Kurds and the PKK are largely down to their resistance to adopting the Turkish identity necessary in the modern Republic of Turkey. Sunni Kurds actually helped the Ottomans kill the Armenians and the Assyrians in World War 1, since those groups were targeted due to being Christian and thus deemed likely to revolt and join the Russians, whom the Ottomans were fighting at the time.

That turbulent period certainly isn't anything for Turks to be proud of, and Cenk and co choosing that name for their group is in very poor taste.

They'll probably talk about it, but it'll be about how people those mean bigoted trolls jumped to conclusions or used the tragedy for their own ends, nevermind that's what TYT does every time a cop kills someone.

At the end of April, Cenk went on C-SPAN and a Republican called in to give him a backhanded compliment about the Young Turks' presidential election night coverage

The election night supercut of Young Turks salt has more views than anything they've released since the election. The closest video they have to it in the past year that matches the amount of views was the time Alex Jones crashed their coverage of the RNC.

I think even Cenk is slowly realizing that more of their audience hate-watches than actually agrees with them
