To be pseudopsychological about it, probably 'cause they run on rails and are thus extremely predictable. This in turn makes autistic people more comfortable with them as there'll be no sudden deviations from the defined paths.
On rare occasions, this little obsession, along with the rest of their thought processes, comes to an end when the train they're on does make a sudden deviation from the defined path.
