So in the last couple of years, ASMR videos have been getting popular on the internet. ASMR, or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, is a "tickling" feeling people get in their body from "triggers," usually someone whispering quietly or tapping on something. This, in itself, isn't that weird. In this case, it's in a similar vicinity to stuff like hypnosis, but the main intention is to "relax" the listener. There is one thing that makes it creepy though.

Before we get there, here is your average ASMR video:

It can be a fetish. The thing is, as a fetish, it isn't extremely popular, but as time goes by, it gets more and more significant. Not only is the fetish creepy, but the videos and community are laughable, and are also sometimes creepy. Here are some creepy videos:

Here are some laughable videos:

Here are some of the more notable channels:

GentleWhispering - Probably the most famous ASMR video creator. She appeared on an Australian news channel once, in which she described ASMR, while the host noted that her videos were "boring," exemplifying a video where she folds towels.

MassageASMR - Some odd bald British guy who is very well known. Most of his videos feature him massaging women, but he has others. He created a series called "ASMR Mastercrafted," which are arguably his creepiest videos. Here's his reasoning behind "Mastercrafted":

"This is part of a new series i call "Mastercrafted" i think i have earnt this title with the experience of 500+ video creations to be able to call some of my videos this title.

To Earn the title of Mastercrafted many hours must be spent to create the audio & video recording, also they must also be suitable to standalone and be suitable to put onto a platform like itunes ect.
I want to work towards creating some professional recordings suitable to distribute as professionally record ASMR recordings, i only feel like to am getting close to have the experience at arranging audio tracks for this."

Ephemeral Rift: His videos are very out there. His videos include ASMR Let's Plays, candy and beer tasting. He has other videos, many of them using the character Corvous D. Clemmons, in which he fakes a stupid accent and wheres a plague doctor mask, trying to be edgy and creepy. He also has a serious called "Manly ASMR," which is questionably gay (Read: He made a video called "Nut Sack Relaxation," where he fondles a bag of nuts).

With all that being said, discuss.

EDIT: BTW, ED Page https://encyclopediadramatica.se/ASMR (It's kinda bare bones, but it's okay. It has a nice guide to trolling "tickle-heads.")

I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys the particularly weird/hilarious/uncomfortable examples of this.

The comments are usually even better than the videos:

So this is what it feels like to have a girlfriend to cuddle with. I can't wait for college for which i shall, try my hardest to please a girl in romance and henceforth achieve my goal of a cuddle session. And then life will be complete :).
If only those eyes could truly see me and try to take care of me. However, we'll never go beyond the screen and that's something that must be accepted.
When I die, this is what my heaven will be. It's been a decade since I experienced anything like this. It almost made me cry. Thank you.
Ur really cute!! Wish i could kiss u!!!!!
I wish you would hold me for real :'(

I tried out an ASMR video once when I was having a hard time sleeping and it wasn't that bad of an experience. The video was of a woman whispering while scratching her nails on various objects like a sparkly high heel. It was creepy, yet surprisingly relaxing and it did end up putting me to sleep.

I understand how the audio can be helpful, because a lot of people find it easier to sleep with certain types of background noise, but the visual aspect doesn't make sense to me.

The ASMR shit is pretty weird, that girlfriend simulator video is sad as fuck, BUT OMFG THAT BELLY. How did that person not die?
Ended up deleting that from my post because I remembered it's not really ASMR, it was just in a playlist I had of weird fetish shit from YouTube. For those truly depraved:

Back to ASMR, I never really understood the appeal. I realize the effect is supposed to very from person to person but a lot of clicks/whispers just make me more uncomfortable than anything. I need an ambient drone if I want background noise to help me focus.

I have misophonia (as a component of sensory processing disorder. Those people who post on /r/misophonia because they mildly dislike the sound of chewing can FUCK OFF). It kicks in when I hear whispering, chewing and water sounds. When it's happening around me I can barely think or process anything other than the fact that someone is whispering near me, and I have to leave immediately because it almost feels like it's crushing my brain. It's a very odd sensation.

I once got dared to listen to a minute of ASMR audio, and I made it 40 seconds in. It was literally the worst thing I've ever heard and I could barely move while it was happening. I wonder if there are any ASMR creators who intended for that to happen?

There are two kinds of ASMR:

1 is someone with a 3D microphone eating food or unboxing makeup or something stupid like that, and getting thousands of views.

2 is some bored, awkward college girl using her computer microphone to crumple a bag for an hour, and getting a dozen views.

The same thing, but different.

A friend of mine actually introduced me to ASMR and I found that I do have... whatever it is...that makes certain sounds relax you, and throughout my life I always thought I was a weirdo with some strange mental problem and didn't get why mixing stuff together in a bowl chilled me out. I was actually pretty distressed about it for a while, but then I looked into it and I get it.

While looking into it I shifted through a bunch of really, really weird ASMR videos. Tapping sounds/writing on paper and other really generic things do it for me but while I was looking I started to wonder why so much of it seems like porn. I mean, personally I can testify that it is not at all sexual (for most people? I've never heard of anyone saying it was sexual for them) the sound of a pen tapping on a table doesn't get me off but I feel like if someone saw the recommended videos I get on youtube because of it they'd probably wonder if I have some weird fetish. The youtube personalities that take requests remind me of porn stars as well.

Also, I feel like I need to share this:

This is similar to my thoughts on ASMR. I actually use these videos on a regular basis to help me get to sleep. It's one of those things that you can't necessarily explain in words. When I hear certain sounds or see specific visuals I get incredibly relaxed. The how and why of this is actually difficult to study in a scientific sense as so much of the experience is abstract and varies from person to person. It's speculated that there is some kind of sexual basis to it due to the universal theme of whispering (people often whisper/use a breathy voice during sex which instinctively helps humans relax into the experience), but ASMR itself isn't intended to be sexual and never is for me. Still, I think the nature of whispering and its constant presence are what gives off the porn vibes in these videos. Also the constant close-ups which seem to be a result of the ASMR tradition where you set up your bianural microphone below or behind the camera.

ASMR reminds me of hypnotism more than anything else. You're encouraged to focus on a singular voice, a repetitive noise, and the visual "triggers" often induce a sort of trance-like state. It's similar to those relaxation/guided therapy tapes that have been around since forever or a white noise machine.

Still, the community is chock-full of some weird characters and videos. I've found one or two people who make consistently good videos and are, from what I've seen, pretty sane. I hardly (if ever) venture outside of these accounts because when ASMR goes crazy it quickly goes really fucking crazy. Even my preferred channels are not without the odd video that makes me wonder how in god's name they came up with the idea.

Ah man, this stuff is hilarious...

20 minutes of cleaning a rubber ear.
Donna is weird. That's really all I can say about her.

All that said, I'd like to present the greatest ASMR video that will ever exist, and the comments are fucking gold:

Ahh, ASMR. I actually do listen to this type of stuff, mainly since I find the scratching noises (particularly those from the scalp massage videos) relaxing in a lot of ways. The whispering can be off putting though, and I can understand (and agree on quite a few cases) that they can come off as creepy.

And dear lord yes, the comments on the videos. Those commenters are amazingly sad and hilarious to look through if you're in the mood to gain dementia. That sad desperation that you see in them is truly amazing to witness.

And yes, there are a lot of lulzy videos which makes this indeed lolcow worthy as a phenomenon. This one is one of my favorite ones:
