Tim is actually how I found KF
at a powerlevel risk FWIW I remember tim from the HC days when tim was still tim...so I saw him go from knowing nothing about electronics to knowing almost nothing about electronics (he admitted this himself during his "i'm a gamedev" phase, but it was also pretty apparent for other reasons)
Basically, Tim was big into a forum called HCFX (Harmony Central Effects forum) - which basically became a social media platform for effects at the time...shoegazer and alterna-type stuff as opposed to rockers (they hung out in the amps forum)
Tim sort of worshiped and emulated a guy named Zachary Vex (ZVEX) who makes more unusual effects with a big, slightly curmudgeonly, personality who was on there.
Funny, but that's a pattern - Billy Corgan in music (note Tim's star tatts on his hand, obv zero-era Pumpkins), ZVEX in effects, Phil Fish in videogames
So anyway, Boutique small batch pedals became a craze ("boo-teek", as they started calling it) so Ole timmie grabbed a breadboard, asked a bunch of questions and almost immediately started a "company"
Other guys like Subdecay and catalinbread also started about that time...but they tended to have, or continue to develop, actual chops
Tim (still tim at this time) really just did circuit bends (where you randomly hook stuff up to make weird sound...like those people that mod speak-n-spells) of a cascaded common emitter amp (which was how ZVEX's most popular product, the "fuzz factory" worked).
The thing about fuzz is it's a misbehaving amplifier - don't get me wrong, they can be neat - but yu don't have a strong target functionality to shoot for - so you don't actually engineer it. Which fit tim
basically get some fucked up sounds...come up with a hipster description, and do a name and graphics.
This fuzz is a liquid cum explosion of lava love - or whatever
It's why his designs never evolved beyond that. he could do a delay or a phaser or even a nice controllable overdrive o anything like that.
Now love or hate the fuzzes, Tim really had no idea about the ealities of production/small manufacturing. He'd wrap shit in electrical tape, then using surface mount, he wouldn't farm out the boards to automation or use an actual wave soldering system, he'd just shove em in a toaster oven.
so there have been major quality issues with the ones he actually built.
Also, the financials weren't actually healthy. His (trans) GF at the end Charolette "the pedal pixie" aka tacticoolgirl (who, incidentally coined "guerilla engineering" to give Devi's method more punk cache) spilled the beans it was never very profitable, she'd occasionally hire help (I'm sure with no legitimate employment practices) then just cut em loose without notice
the "profit" came from the fact that Devi wasn't paying any taxes, so that would eat probably 25%-30% margin anyway - so the "profit" was really just tax fraud.
It's funny b/c you'd see Devi both tout a successful biz selling $250K plus'(it speaks to Devi's biz awareness right there, he was talking gross sales but wasn't actually accounting nets and whatnot) and excuse things with 'you people think I'm rich, but I'm barely getting by type comment
The console thingy was sort of a stop gap, I think to move to a passive income model (relying on the branding, which is what Tim is really about) but have other people make modules and, behind the scenes - well Devi said it :
Half the budget of the Console kickstarter has been spent on actual Console design work, and the other half was mismanaged and end up getting eaten up by business and personal expenses over the course of the past two years.
I understand this is negligence on my part, and I intend on making it up to every single one of you.
Basically he wasn't making a living and had to embezzle kickstarter money to even keep devi ever FX afloat (tres Enron)
The pedals as an economic concern may have been viable (though I suspect as a line within a more stable or diversified operation) but to do so, Devi needed to learn and do the actual job...small manufacturing business (cost acounting, logistics all that)
What Devi (tim) does is basically branding work (he once said about himself in a fit of honesty "I'm a hype man through and through" - now deleted)

you could see it in his failed videogame career where he liked to come up with "ideas" and drawings, but when it was time to make a functional game, it'd fall apart and he'd move onto the next "passion"
and now his streamer stuff. which actually is a better fit b/c what Tim really likes is drawing and attention
I mean now his product IS the attention stuff..and he's aimed down market at gay tweens (I'm not using that as an insult, that's basically his market - and kudos to Tim for taking a more realistic bite)

Well no shit. Tim's in his early 40s now, he's rapidly (already has really, this is borrowed time) aging out /w his target audience of tweens (I'm including his late teens/early 20s audience in that as they are psycho-socially stunted... they actually CELEBRATE it - twee, weaboo, all that stuff)
He can keep it up for a while longer behind the puppet, esp with the voice surgery, but he's more in the age range of his audience's 'rents more that the cool older kid persona he's pushing

I would say Tim should have tried to get a peon position at Nickelodeon or something in his 20s, but he wouldn't have survived not being the center of attention or having a boss [gasp] tell him to do something.

I've seen Tim blame HCFX for 'teaching him toxic aggression'. HE was the one that latched onto that idea (and you can see it followed him through what he tried to emulate. Not just the people, but the abrasive parts of people)
HCFX were the pussycats of that site since they tended to be the more emo, arty type guys (think radiohead) and really self-regulated a ton (the mod had autistic kids, there was a pre-SJW - as in actual - philosophy PhD student, a bassoonist, guys like that) -- the amp and guitar forums were more rockin bring-the-brutal dudez
I think it's pretty obvious to someone who isn't in full on struggle with their identity that Tim is NOT confident, he has a really weak self-image so has to go on the offensive to protect his lack of stable identity.
Hate to say it b/c I'm sure it isn't much for TIm to be Tim either, but the cuts on his arms are kind of indicative of that shit.

I was poking about trying to see if I could find the video where Tim gets schooled on, what used to be, his fave videogame - and on his header video on twitch I clicked around looking for gameplay but landed on arnd minute 58 (it starts a few mins earlier, but then he rambles a bunch) where he talks about he had a revelation that he's 'done masking' (as in masking autistic behaviors for the comfort of society)...and with the realization, overnight, he's 'gone from being unsure about who I am to super confident'
as a bonus he also talks about how his exes would use him fake "listen" to his deep analysis (that's how he decided he was autistic, people can't handle his depth) to exploit him for his financial support.
