The holidays just aren’t the same without Bill O’Reilly bitching about the War On Christmas :(

But Festivus poles! Happy Holidays!

Why can women only throw around meaningless insults and talk about dick sizes when insulting a man? I guess they can't find a real reason yet.

Emasculation is the go to below the belt insult. But you'd think that men would be totally desensitized to it by now since it's commonly used for humor in the media and has been for a long time. I imagine it has little effect.

I just wish that the muzak would expand beyond the same songs done by different artists. You have “Winter Wonderland”, “Jingle Bells”, “Silver Bells”, and motherfucking-die-in-a-fire “Santa Baby” as 95% of the songs.

I mean there’s a fuckton of carols that are beautiful. I had a CD that had Julie Andrews singing “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” that was great.

The war on Christmas is any time someone doesn't think Christmas stuff on display with the other holidays looks right, or when they tell you "Happy Holidays" instead of Merry Christmas. So basically it's been going on since forever.

The Bill O' Reilly conspiracy theory that mega corporations and the government are involved in some kind of nebulous liberal conspiracy to destroy Christmas because Jaysus is beyond retarded, but R/atheism+ types who every Christmas act hateful and spiteful towards everyone in an attempt to ruin the season for others? Those guys exists, I run into them every year.

Nat King Cole singing The Christmas Song is like that. Cole could have just picked up a Women's Studies textbook and sang the text and it would probably been just as good, though.

God forbid you get to sleep in a comfy bed in a nice climate controlled box instead of trying to find some damp underpass to sleep just to keep the rain of your head.

Agreed. But most corporations can't be seen taking a religious stance; stuff like Hobby Lobby is, IIRC, an exception. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is trouble right from the first verse, with that whole "Remember Christ our savior was born on Christmas day" thing.

Though it might be fun to scour the records of really old, traditional Christmas carols to find ones that don't explicitly mention Jesus. Can you imagine doing your shopping in Wal-mart to the tune of a jolly medieval carol about toting around a roasted pig's head?

Sometimes I wonder if it's like that Discworld thing with the God of Hangovers. They don't feel ashamed for being selfish twats, but SOMEBODY has to.

I like how the book that's from is also seasonal and fitting.

Christmas salt is great, because it goes so many ways. You've got religion crazies (Pagans salty at Christmas, Christians salty at the war on Christmas, Muslims salty at...well, they're always pissed off about something), you've got smug atheists, people annoyed at not being given presents, and people being annoyed that people are giving too many.

People started saying "holidays" as a way to be inclusive and non-offensive, especially out in public because retailers don't want to alienate customers. Only the reeeeeeee-tards (on the right) could take this as proof that there's a conspiracy afoot to destroy good Christian values.

Same way the Reeeeeee-tards of the left now think that trying to avoid being offensive by using gender-neutral pronouns in your speech means you are part of a conspiracy to LITERALLY MURDER trans people.

This whole thing is yearly stupidity, stupidity that's proven because it keeps coming out year after year after year no matter how things are really trending out there.

The John Birch Society started the whole thing back in the Fifties when they believed the Commies were doing it to weaken America, the only thing that's changed over the almost 70 years since is who is in charge, and every right-wing boogeyman has had a turn at the imaginary helm, Jews, Commies, neo-commies, brainwashed liberal academics, satanists, kids who play rock music too loud... etc.....

And like any good conspiracy, the fact that our alleged fragile institutions have withstood this alleged assault by unknowable, unaccountable and incredibly powerful foes for the last half-century doesn't make it any less valid.

People get really upset about the sanctity of a holiday that's been commercialized so much over the last 70 years it doesn't really mean anything anymore don't they?

Happy Holidays is nice to say, and so is Merry Christmas.
