This guy was just weird. The way he dressed (90's school teacher attire), the way he talked and that stupid manifesto. I couldn't read it in German because of how convoluted his language was. Made my head hurt.

As far as I am concerned, he was a crazy racist loon with paranoid delusions (that somehow made sense to him) and a gun.

I'm wondering that if he is, was this a premeditated thing, or had he stopped taking medication, or something.


Edit: Premeditated in the sense that if he was on meds, was this thought of before he stopped taking, or after.

He was a member of a sports gun club and had a permission (issued in 2013) for a gun, later for two. Gun control in germany is very strict and you can get it only after a psychic evaluation, a review of your personal informations and a background check (if you ever been to jail and so on).
If the guy would have been diagnosed and medicated, he would never been able to get this license.
So seems like he kept quiet, except for his three spergouts at the police/letter to the district attorney and federal attorney.

To be honest, the spergouts should have been a warning sign for the authorities. If they would have checked up on him, they would have seen his permission as this is important information which is always put in your file. So instead they had a good laugh and screwed up in the long run.

The same thing happened when I talked to my roommate. He had no knowledge about the shooter's mental illness or his psychotic manifesto and only cared about >muh nadsees. He compared Rathjen with Tarrant which is quite a bit of a reach since Tarrant was absolutely calculated and this guy has been off his rocker for a good two decades with zero governmental intervention despite his repeatedly filed suits for his clearly pathological impression that he's "unjust surveillance", not to mention that he didn't just go to the cops for this, but also filed those with the state and general attornies.
This kind of ignorance from those judicial instances makes my blood boil, and I really hope that this is a case of simply sloppy handling and not deliberate use of a sick person to push an agenda, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were. It's politically convenient after all, considering how much the German political landscape is being shaken up lately.

One thing that frustrates me each time a terror attack happens, no matter the ideology:

Why do they always go for innocent people instead of the politicians or other key figures of influence, that are responsible for whatever they claim to be fighting against?

Especially in the EU, where politicians are not well protected at all. In Germany only the chancellor has 24/7 personal security, for example.
But even a botched attack would earn more support than outright killing innocent people.

Some will obviously be too lazy and/or incompetent to do the planning necessary for a high-profile assassination. Others will give in to an autistic obsession with killcounts.
However, many others seem to have the requisite patience and cognitive faculties to do so but choose not to. It really makes you think about what their real intentions might be and/or who else might be involved.

Another thing to ponder: schizo paranoiacs, who often already believe that they are an integral part of some global conspiracy, would be some of the easiest people to cultivate as assets/sleeper agents. And no one wouof believe them if they tried to reveal what was going on, because it would be interpreted as another one of their delusions.

Bold of you two to assume that a terrorist thinks that the people they're killing are innocent. In this case, the dude honestly believed that Arabs, North Africans, and most Muslims contributed nothing to society at best and killed or attacked native Europeans at worst. By his own logic they aren't innocent, they're fair game. This applies roughly to any ideological killing, really.

Also as to the "why don't they kill the elite?" question, IIRC Breivik said the reason he didn't go after Norway's PM was because it wouldn't kill enough people he considered traitors, they'd just replace him with someone else, and the assassinated person would just become a martyr. I can imagine a similar logic follows with most other terrorists.

It is 7.30 am in Germany right now, so the media is beginning to switch into high gear. And yes, most articles just talk about the racist stuff the guy wrote, not about how insane the whole manifesto is or his spergouts at the police/letters to district and state attorney.
To understand German media, they tend to report correctly, but in this case the whole nazistuff was already in motion before anyone analyzed his writings. Politicians made claims against the far-right soon after the news about the shooting emerged, because it was so obvious: Targets brown, perp white.

So now they can't backpaddle. Too much spin on the nazistuff, would look bad if everyone finds out they were bashing a mentally ill guy who showed the signs and the authorities fucked up (he had a weapons permit and sperged out at a police station several times, no one put one and one together!). So the mental problems are only mentioned a bit, to give the stories they print now a bit of seasoning.
