About This Game

In a dystopia where wealthy capitalists control elections, media, and the lives of working people, we’re faced with two choices -- accept it or fight for something better.

Tonight We Riot doesn’t have just one hero. Instead, you play as a movement of people whose well-being determines the success of your revolution.

Core Features:
Couch co-op
20 unlockable weapons, gear, and perks
A dog
Whimsy
Kaiju
A wood chipper
Endless Mode
Horror Synth
The unique catharsis that comes from throat-punching a billionaire ghoul who would rather watch the world and everyone on it burn than lose a tax break

Please spend your money on our game, Tonight We Riot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tonight We Riot all about?
If you want more info than what's on the store page, check out this Kotaku piece.

What is Pixel Pushers Union 512?
A handful of industry vets and novices who decided to make some videogames and share any money the games make equally. They made Tonight We Riot.

What is Means Interactive?
It's the game publishing division of Means TV, the world's first post-capitalist worker-owned streaming service.

Weren't you working with New Blood Interactive before? I like New Blood.
We were. We like them too! But you have to admit, Means Interactive is a perfect fit for this game.

Why did Tonight We Riot drop off my wishlist?
There were some problems getting the original Steam page resurrected. Because so many people at Valve are rightfully working remote right now, support requests took a lot longer to resolve. The Steam store page and hub were finally transferred and made public only two days ago, at which point the most recent 126 people to add it to their wishlist had it removed. We're glad you found us anyway!

I saw you at SXSW like 5 years ago. What took so long?
The devs have a bunch of kids and day jobs.

Incessantly Asked Questions

IF tHiS iS A SoCiAlIsT GaMe, WhY IsN'T It fReE?

If that's a serious question, there's some cool stuff to learn about socialism. First, plenty of forms of socialism coexist with markets and exchanging money. The key to socialism is eliminating the exploitation of workers that comes when capital concentrates into the hands of others. Since the workers who made this game are also the owners of what they produced, that exploitation is less of an issue.
If you're concerned that the platforms the game is on aren't worker-owned, or that the device the game is played on might have been made through unfair labor practices, those are totally valid concerns. But, as that way-too-often-applicable comic points out, you can live in a society while also wanting to improve it somewhat.

Still, I'm angry this game exists.
Sit with that a while. If a silly little pixel-art game about people rising up and overthrowing a repressive capitalist kleptocracy makes you so angry that you want to post pissy comments or review-bomb it, no one will stop you. But does the thought of people rationing insulin make you this angry? Do you think maybe your outrage has better places to go? No? Welp, see you in the comments.

Wew lads. And to top it all off, their Steam discussions forum is going as you'd expect. Exhibit A:

The only people that would want to play this apologist garbage as exactly the kind of Woko Haram freaks that don't have any money to spare on it, because they're too busy supporting ChapoTraphouse and buying titty-skittles from China. I'm going to go check their steam forums for the inevitable Ourosbouros of leftist woketard infighting, though.

I was hoping this last one would go further.

The "core features" list is far more obnoxious than their theme and art direction. That was clearly written by a sped.

I even like giant monsters. And dogs! But they shouldn't be "core features" of a fucking game, and they shouldn't even be in every game. This just makes it seem slipshod instead of tight and focused, which is probably the actual reason this shit took five years.

I'm intrigued about the suggestion that among the demographic of "people that don't like this game", the reviewer appears to lump in paedos, but the 2nd comment is a winner, though.

"All the little anarchists I'm supposed to lead keep wandering off, how do I stop that?!"

Also funny that a bitch can comment, but won't allow anyone else to comment.

the only games that properly gamify the political process are papers, please and frog fractions.
also, hold up, I've seen that fucking font before:

neat, glad to see the indie pixel retro game dev tradition of ripping off vastly, vastly superior SNES titles from the '90s is alive and well

I remember seeing a booth for this game at a con years ago. I assumed it came out a while back. I assumed wrong.

They probably Googled "retro game fonts" and downloaded that one without realizing this is a recreation of the Earthbound font.
