Oh Touhou, i remember some of my friends getting into it a couple of years ago and being annoying as fuck about it (kinda like early bronies), if i saw this thread like two years ago i would probably have written an unnecessarily long rant about 2hu fans, but at this point there's no reason to whine about 2hu fans, they're a part of the internet and almost everyone knows how autistic they are and what to expect from them, maybe there is some exceptional individual in the community worth talking about, but until someone finds that guy there's nothing worth talking about the 2hu community.

It used to be comparatively well-known in 2010/2011 but now I've heard hardly anything about it the past three years. It doesn't have anywhere near the visibility it used to, and the rise of later fandoms (MLP, LoK, Homestuck, now SU and Undertale) seems to have killed it.
The fandom is awful, the games are okay, and the music + remixes are decent. I don't recall anyone in particular being infamous, just people who were untalented and obnoxious.

Drama wise, there's really only one thing I can dig up.
So a few months back, people had the great idea of making a Touhou-themed Smash Bros, called "Touhou Super Smash Battles". Everything was looking good, until the project creator decided to create a Kickstarter for it (which went against the fan projects rules). FromSoySauce, the creator, insisted that everything was in the clear, and kept the Kickstarter up until ZUN (the creator of Touhou) had finally yoinked the Kickstarter. Then, FSS proceeded to accuse ZUN of being a front for the Japanese mafia (I cannot find the video as of now). Someone later ran a decompiler on the demo program, and according to the commenters, the code reeked of amateur practices. This is the FSS's response to having his code decompiled:

Now I will say that FSS isn't/wasn't the worst because although very prideful (changing the project so that he could still milk money), at the end of the day, it was a misguided startup to a game company.
And to finish this off, I do remember a pedo stalking 13 year old cosplayers at conventions, and even asking their numbers, and then he demanded pictures of them (I don't remember if he demanded CP). I believe his name was Sergey, or something close to it (Serguy, Sergev, etc.). Although similar in name, he is not the Sergey (Titov) who gave us WarZ.

It seems that the Touhou community (well fandom, really) is more self-policing than others. There is a particular divide between the people who actually play the games (or at least engage in the content), and those that kind of loiter around causing problems. Usually, the latter are universally condemned by the former. Additionally, any sort of other fandom "mixing" is also heavily panned (furry and MLP mashups are heavily downvoted on image sharing sites). Fan-made music is also top fucking notch (once you look past IOSYS and Innocent Key), shoutout to Alstroemeria Records, they've great gapless albums.

I really didn't think there's going to be much content because I couldn't think of a Touhou equivalent of Chris-chan.
If we're actually going to discuss communities, then I'll just say that 4chan's /jp/ is probably the most acidic; but you should have expected that anyway. There was some drama about a cosplayer who outed herself as female. I don't know the details (archives are dead), but she has renounced the board and won't come back.

Necroing this thread as I'm surprised nobody posted about this. The Stupid One/Helvetica, the owner of Shrinemaiden.org otherwise known as Maidens of the Kaleidoscope passed away last January.
That community was probably one of the bigger Touhou communities 6-8 years ago. From what I've been told secondhand, it attracted a lot of troons, pedophiles and groomers. The owner in particular was a troon and often screamed about Trump and trans people.
