Traditionalism and social conservativism in modern American society - Does it have a purpose?

Traditionalism and social conservativism are some of the largest components of the right-wing ideology and the Republican platform, but personally as an atheist and someone who wouldn't consider themselves right wing I don't see much use use or reason in tradition for tradition's sake. If any conservatives could explain there own reasons for supporting traditionalism I'd love to hear it.

Tl;Dr not a conservative but seeing the decay of western civilization is abhorrent.
Promiscuity, immaturity, enabling degenerate sexual acts, decline to gain knowledge and contribute, censorship of our speech which we were founded on and lack of self control with the youngish adults 21-30 can throw a nation off course. As cogs of a machine we need to work to keep things moving.
Not to say fun isn't a problem but too much of it has been the problem.

If two consenting adults in the right state of mind wish to engage in acts of intercourse I don't view it as anyone's place to police them.
I mean in terms of promiscuity within ze pooblic spaze I.e. San Francisco pride parades where they wear leather strapped with dildos and dry hump each other in front of hundreds which includes kids old enough to remember that kind of shit.

Traditionalism emphasises a pragmatic gradualist view of society, it looks at what works long-term.

because great things are built on a great foundation; the more the foundation breaks and chips away, the less it can hold everything that it is built upon. I imagine conservatism and traditionalism, in its purest form, aim to uphold said foundation, and to keep the country from running into the ground.

but everything is cyclical in nature, to preserve a balance. we're just currently in the throes of equalizing said balance. there will always be a need for conservatism as much as liberalism.

American conservatism failed its one job - defend the family and freedom.

They "defended the family" by doing moral majority nonsense and ignored all of the actual social ills.

You see people like Tucker Carlson speaking talking about the state abandoning the people for the interests of large corporations but its too little, too late.

They've failed to defend freedom. The PATRIOT Act and stuff like banning critcism of Israel.. yeah, that and the moral majority stuff have killed it.

Conservative politicians run on the freedom and family but all they do while in power is slash the corporate tax rate. They ignore the social ills and then run on fixing them later.

I take the stance of ignorance. I am ignorant of the world, ignorant of others, and ignorant of myself. There are significant gaps in my knowledge and those gaps extend into important things. I can either descend into nihilism or find a way to fill enough of those gaps such that I can survive and live a fruitful life. One of the ways I do that is by looking at traditions. Science is the best way to discover truth, I think, but it's not perfect, and those imperfections can be smoothed out over time by leaning into tradition, and visa versa.
So you get something like bloodletting as a tradition that is removed from medicine through the application of scientific reasoning. Then you get tradition preventing total societal collapse through blind trust of the scientific hypothesis that hormone blockers and sex changes for adolescents are an effective treatment for gender-nonconforming behaviors. If that ends up not working in the long term, as I think it wont, tradition keeps a group of healthy humans huddled away from all that who won't participate and will be able to continue the human race by the time the generation of infertile suicidal victims of the practice grows up, or fails to grow up, and offers too much evidence for society at large to ignore. Science will eventually catch up, because of it's self-correcting power, but tradition keeps it from catching up too late.
Science is how we as a society progress, but traditions are born through a very Darwinist method where only what worked survived, and so due to the necessity for societal survival, traditions should at least be respected and not outright rejected when they don't meet our sensibilities. Societies with traditions that resulted in a total societal collapse aren't around anymore, while societies with traditions that preserved the society long term are still around. Respecting traditions as society moves forward preserves society until science to catch up and confirm what works while rejecting what doesn't with substantial and reliable evidence.

This is the power of centrism. Look upon my moderate views, ye extremists, and despair.

If only conservatism was actually about protecting the fundamental pillars of what makes society function instead of an excuse to remain ignorant and never adapt to the modern world.

Depends what you mean by tradition and preserving it.

In st. Kilda before they moved everyone off, there was a practice of smearing the umbilicus of a newborn with seabird oil. Unsurprisingly, the infant mortality rate was rather high. That kind of tradition with active harm that’s done because we always have done is the sort of stuff that progressives should be after.

But all tradition isn’t bad. Some of it is because things have been tried, tested and work. Modern leftist progressives are ripping down boundaries for the sake of it instead of looking at what works and what doesn’t. It’s like they say: progressives rip down the fence and conservatives ask why it’s there.

Society can and should change to be healthy - the pace and nature of that change is what’s critical. Too much and too fast and you have problems. See: transing kids and mass immigration in Europe.

You seriously think there aren't conservative shitholes and third world countries?
It's a basic balancing act. The dumbasses who go the extreme left way just immediately fall over sideways onto "let's make everything legal and let everyone in, everyone's a perfect little dandelion" while sitting far away from the poo 'hoods.

The answer isn't to trip over the other way, and any "gawd shit's just as bad on the other side" is not an argument for not getting back on the seesaw and do it right this time. Some conservative policies like 'having borders and a legal procedure to migrating' goes a long way towards not having overpopulated streets getting covered in excrement.

Depends what you mean by "Degenerate". Like, I remember a republican friend sent me this:
Bizarre Sex Habits of The Extreme Right-Wing
... anti-abortion extremist Neal Horsley was a guest on The Alan Colmes Show, a FOX News radio program. The topic was an interesting one - whether or not an internet service provider should allow Horsley to post the names of abortion doctors on his website. ... In the course of the interview, however, Colmes asked Horsley about his background, including a statement that he had admitted to engaging in homosexual and bestiality sex.
"Is it true?" Colmes asked.
"Hey, Alan, if you want to accuse me of having sex when I was a fool, I did everything that crossed my mind that looked like I..."
AC: "You had sex with animals?"
NH: "Absolutely. I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule."

I don't see much use use or reason in tradition for tradition's sake

I don't see much reason for breathing oxygen for breathing's sake either, but for living's sake it's a pretty good habit.

The use of tradition is that they're tested and tried methods.

If you think there can be no value ever in any type of tradition, then you're completely rootless.

San Francisco- it's a place where sub $100k is below the poverty line and people still shit in the streets.

Just one of the perks of having Indian immigrants bring their traditional culture.
