I think it's a case of "The more unique your trigger the more unique your personality" Being triggered by say, Spiders, is dull, lots of people have arachnophobia and get a bit creeped out by spiders or pictures of them. If you want to be that one shimmering perfect special snowflake in the blizzard you have to be truly Speshul and therefore telling people you're triggered by say, images of people eating ravioli or some bullshit like that gives you that air of mystery. Also because it's just so tempting to "trigger" these people it gives you an almost infinite supply of oppression points that you can spend on an army of people to trollshield. This then further perpetuates the snowflakes belief that he or she is somehow worthy of the attention which forces them to create even more outrageous triggers to continue the cycle of bullshittery.

I'm triggered by people making sense. ween

Why is it often that triggers are for very little things such as well, flowers... sunsets... brushes? I mean I'm joking but some are really banal like that. If a thing like that makes you unnerved or remind you of a tragedy you had then fine however you should really work to immunize yourself from them.

Because it's about control. They want to be in charge of you and your thoughts. Every time you see a picture of flowers? You have to think of them and do what they want, lest you be labeled problematic infront of all your tumblr buddies.

There are PTSD survivors that have triggers that are innocuous things that cause traumatic memories to resurface. However, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't loudly announce those things on Tumblr.

Yes but those things don't tend to be retarded. Also people with genuine PTSD have an explanation for their triggers. The victim of a violent assault may be triggered by the smell of the deodorant their attacker was wearing for example. Tumblr triggers lack any rhyme or reason and if you ask why a person can't be shown images of hair tangles in a comb or some shit they flip out and either angrily scream a bullshit explanation like their mother being rough when they combed their hair in the mornings or chimp out completely and play the "I don't have to explain it to you" card. My point is, REAL triggers stand up to scrutiny and any person who is genuinely affected enough to have to tell you their triggers is likely to offer you some explanation as to why.

I know someone who asked me to tag photographs of anything underwater because when she was younger, her sister legit attempted to drown her. Now that shit I can understand, and the fact that she approached me privately about it since I reblog nature/animal photos a lot (oceans and swamps and alligators swimming and shit), and explained it without turning it into a sob story, made me a lot more willing to comply with their request. There was none of this "omg they'rep urposely tri gg eringg m me" vagueblogging shit, no gigantic capslock rant because I accidentally forgot to tag a post or something.

At the very least Tumblrinas should learn to fucking ask nicely.

From personal experience with PTSD survivors? No. They don't. If they're triggered by Christmas lights, they don't go screaming at everyone to tag their holiday displays. The more innocuous the trigger is, actually, the less they seem to want others to know because they're ashamed and embarrassed that something so harmless can cause such a reaction. It's one of those things they might expect family and very close friends to respect but not an entire website or all of human society.

I fucking hate when people trigger food.
If you can't look at a picture of food on the internet because it makes you feel bad or makes you want to starve yourself or stuff yourself, you need intense therapy and to get off the internet.
I saw people doing it for Ramadam because 'Muzlims can't eat and I can't make dem feel bad!!!!!'. What bullshit.

Fasting can get hard at times so it's nice to tag food as a sign of respect. It definitely shouldnt be trigger material though, every piece of media involve food here and there, no avoiding that.

Personally, since fasting is a voluntary decision, I don't think it warrants any special consideration.
I usually see food flagged as a more general trigger, though. I remember one person I followed would "trigger warning: food" on any stories or pics that involved food.

It's a courtesy, but that's all it is. Absolutely no one is obligated to tag anything for anyone, and that includes food for people who are fasting. They made that choice, and if they end up breaking their fast because they saw somebody on Tumblr post a picture of giant chocolate chip cookies with fudge in the middle, that's on them, not the blogger.

Not once have I had anyone ask for me to tag food, and if I were to guess, I'd say the number of people who are browsing Tumblr while fasting is so small it's barely a consideration. The number of people tagging for these hypothetical people fasting, however, is very high, which really just brings us back to Tumblr's constant need to maintain the image of being a thoughtful, progressive-thinking individual, without actually doing anything of consequence.

@Meowthkip worded it better than I could have, it's not something that should be mandatory, but it's a nice mark of respect that can create dialogues and positive exchanges between people from different origins and cultures. Basically, positive cosmopolitanism.
When Tumblrinas hop in and turn it into a Trigger Warning (which implies an obligation and generally being invasive in people's business), it gets ridiculous.

As I noted before, it probably is a carry-over from blogs or forums specifically for survivors or sexual assault. As these people migrated to Tumblr, which has a much broader scope of people it attracts, these people started up blogs doing the same thing and probably asked people who they followed to tag things. From there on out, it spread like a virus.

I do tag stuff that I think might make people uncomfortable just as a heads-up, but it's a courtesy more than anything. There's people who follow me just for cute pictures of puppies and not gifs from spectacularly gory horror movies, but my tags are more like "blood," "guts," "creepy" or "gross." No one is obligated to tag triggers on their blog, though, which is something a lot of Tumblr users don't seem to get. Tumblr is not a safe space, nor is it anybody's job to make it as safe a space as possible.

Sooner or later, they're going to have to come to terms with that.

I know it's a bit off topic, but I've seen Tumblr users outside of Tumblr, in other sites, and they try hard to make it a "safe space" by censoring people, lashing out, being nasty. They do it in ANY site. They form some sort of cult and exclude anyone with a different mentality. They attack other people, they kiss the staff's asses in an attempt to manipulate them... it's pretty fucking creepy.

Their efforts will only end in failure.
