The Trump administration announced today that it may ban the sale of most flavored e-cigarettes in an attempt to curb teen vaping, The New York Times reports. In a press release, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) shared that the FDA plans to finalize a policy to remove most non-tobacco-flavored e-cigs from the market. The FDA is expected to share specifics on the plan in the coming weeks.
The decision comes amid outcry over the increase in teen vaping. According to preliminary findings from the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than a quarter of high school students were current e-cig users in 2019, and the majority of youth e-cig users prefer fruit and mint flavored products. "The Trump Administration is making it clear that we intend to clear the market of flavored e-cigarettes to reverse the deeply concerning epidemic of youth e-cigarette use that is impacting children, families, schools and communities," said HHS Secretary Alex Azar.
I just announced with @POTUS and @FDACommissioner that we will be finalizing policies that will clear flavored e-cigarettes from the market. New provisional data show that youth use continues to rise rapidly, and we will not stand idly by.

E-cigarettes have not had a good month. Last week, the CDC cautioned against using any vape products until it can figure out what's making people sick. More than 450 people have reportedly come down with a mysterious vaping-linked lung illness, and three people have died. Michigan recently became the first state to ban flavored e-cigs, and the FDA recently criticized Juul for telling students that its devices are "totally safe."
While teen vaping may be a problem, it's unclear if banning flavored products will keep kids from smoking e-cigs. It could also upset the many adults who prefer flavored products. The FDA's plan is not yet finalized, but it could allow some flavored products to remain on the market if they obtain pre-market compliance approval, which could be a lengthy and expensive process.

But why? If you're gonna ban one, ban them all, but I wouldn't want that. If he wants to focus on the really bad drugs or whatnot, stop letting fetanyl come in from China.

Got to protect that big tobacco. Trump is very smart. "So smart that people will say Mr.President you are so smart and he will say. Yes I am smart but you haven't seen nothing yet. I have the smartest smart in the world." Trump is a fucking joke along with all politicians.

I don't smoke any more and I am glad I stopped. But vaping seems like a better alternative to cigarettes.

I don't think inhaling anything into your lungs is particularly good for you and at least doctors know what to do with smoking-related illnesses.
Not going to argue that. You are 100% correct. But at least vaping seems like a "better" alternative. It would be nice if no one smokes or vapes. And much healthier but to each his own

Quitting is the best decision I ever made. I tried so many times and failed and asked my doctor to give me prescription for Champix (I think it's Chantix in the USA). And it helped me quit and never smoked again. Champix worked for me and I have no side effects from it.

Tobacco flavors are being exempted because, surprise, they're made from real tobacco.

But that that mango parfait cheesecake, or even just apple..... they ain't made from real apples or mangoes.

And not just that; I've looked into some of the dyes and standard artificial fruit flavorings that've been used since the beginning of artificial flavorings; from what little I've found on the subject, most give off some really nasty esthers & whatnot when heated past smoking point (which is different than vapor point, and may be separated by only a fraction of a degree). The same goes for cotton, no matter how organic it is.

A lot of "food grade" artificial flavorings & colorings also do nasty shit like oxidise or react to UV, which is why food products using them are well sealed & packaged to avoid exposure to light. Normally this means the taste won't be right; but now it's a different chemical being heated.

For anyone that's been vaping long-term, I'm sure y'all have encountered bottles of old juice which have turned colors and/or develop a funky scent/flavor; yet somehow this is seen as desirable among vapers? Oy vey......

More or less this. Everything I’ve seen makes it look like the ppl getting COPD and other nasty respiratory problems isn’t just the vitamin E (I think it was E at least) that dipshits use in part of the process to get THC into a vapeable form.

Seems like flavorless/colorless should also be fine.

I mean if you're going to ban e-cigs, just ban them all, not just the flavored ones. They're obnoxious and honestly pointless when you still have the tired but true tobacco ones.

For decades, cigarette tobacco has all sorts of flavorings to it; in 1994, the government forced the major tobacco companies to disclose what they added and that includes artificial and natural flavors, including extracts from common fruits and vegetables. Despite that, government propaganda has advertised the combustion products (compounds chemically similar to tar, etc.) as "what's in" cigarettes. This disingenuous nonsense was what persuaded me to not support smoking bans.
