Disaster Tumblr being sold to Automattic Inc. (Wordpress) by Verizon for reportedly less than $20 Million, six years after being bought for $1 Billion - Tumblr tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling down

Did the porn ban really do that much damage? I'm waiting for twitter to fall too, even though as much as I hate it, it allows us to know WTF is going on as it happens. The only thing left will be facebook for old people and instagram for the rest of us
I think the ban actually did quite some damage to the traffic as in people looking for other places to post their stuff

Oh yeah twitter got a fucking huge amount of these deviants after the purge. I can't tell you the number of pedo accounts and accounts run by underage kids selling nudes I've reported since the ban. And at first twitter was doing a good job of getting rid of them. But then after a few months it's like they just gave up and couldn't keep up with these people.

In that case it's no wonder why the owners of tumblr were just like "fuck this we need to ban this shit"

Bah, tumblr as a platform was a good idea. It was light, simple, and precise for some microblogging or curating. If you just wanted to have a simple journal without making it so complicated, tumblr was perfect. The problem was when all the nutjobs arrived and brought their autism. All internet good ideas are ruined by the same kind of people. They bring their grievances and sensibilities and ruin it for everybody else.
Yeah, but Twitter at the start was also a good idea. It let you follow a person who could post updates, instead of a publication or website. So if you liked an author, instead of keeping track of the 4 magazines and 6 newspapers their articles might appear in, the author could just micro-blog a link to their latest output to their fans.

Remember site-based RSS feeds? You don't see those around much any more. Twitter replaced them with content-based feeds.

And then it rapidly went to shit once people stopped using Twitter for notifications, and started trying to use it for actual communication. The art of human communication itself was set backwards, for the first time in hundreds of years, once people started tweeting their thoughts instead of their content. And the world itself was made a worse place once people started treating tweets (or any social media posts) as the content itself.

I don't know the exact point when Tumblr went to shit, but I'll bet it was some similar inflection point where they started treating the Tumblr posts themselves as important, instead of the content that should have been crafted independently and merely shared on a blogging platform. It's probably a function of the "engagement" metrics, which value the postings over the content; those can be addictive for attention-seekers.

they had to make a choice between pornography or making the website adult only. They only had to make that choice because their development staff was full of exceptional individuals. Hiring a better development staff to fix the problems with porn bots would have kept the place afloat without changing much of anything.

Originally you could edit any part of a post being reblogged so it looked like the OP said...whatever you want. Young adult fiction writer John Green had one of his posts edited to be a long essay about how he loves balls, a lot. That edited post got millions of reblogs, way more than any of his real posts. Tumblr actually bothered to fix this problem once it had spurned a semi famous person, but they took their sweet fucking time doing so.

Once tumblr decided to get rid of replies. Everyone hated this. Replies would go in the notes on a post and you didn't have to reblog/PM someone to say something to them. Several months later, tumblr put out a user survey about replies, and it really seemed like they wanted to bring back replies but didn't know how and couldn't remember the exact details of its functionality so they were asking butthurt users to fill in the blanks so they could make the same thing again.

For several years their "block" feature was just an "ignore" feature, and you could only ignore one person, not the notes/mentions associated with their reblogs of your content. You couldn't block people from reblogging you for an absurdly long time.

Some guy who wasn't a total exceptional individual, the xkit guy, fixed a lot of the technical problems with browser extensions that he offered for free. Of course he got baselessly accused of rape, in a way so flimsy that *everyone* agreed that they were ridiculous rumors, and then never came back. As sad as that is, it is pretty fucking astounding that a single rando could fix the technical problems of a website like tumblr and they can't even fix it themselves.

Jesus fucking Christ, they forgot how their own website functioned. How old is tumblr? I play old school runescape and every so often the devs can't do a update because the shit is so old but that's rare. But a social media site founded in 07 can't keep shit afloat is insane. Myspace is still functioning for Christ sake

IICR, wordpress already had the same features tumblr did. Or, rather, you could make a tumblr-like blog with wordpress. I remember because I managed a wordpress blog for my job some years ago and it had the same post options as tumblr. I haven't used wp since then, so I don't know how that changed.
Wordpress as a platform is pretty flexible, aside from the fact that it's market share makes it a popular target for hackers. Wordpress is already the tool of choice for news sites and there's even ways to use it as a eCommerce platform if you wanted. What Tumblr did that Wordpress couldn't do well was the social aspect. Outside the journalism industry, Wordpress and blogging isn't trendy. To the CEO buying Tumblr it likely seemed like a good idea.

Do you guys think there's no way to actually monetize Tumblr ?
I could easily see it as an alternative to Instagram where nudity is allowed, all they have to do is to lift the NSFW ban and make it easier to "discover creators" like ig does.

sounds like crypto
Advertising on porn related sites is always a risky move. Advertisers have been notorious for pulling ads for years and payment processors were demonetizing porn before they became political. The 4channel split happened as Hiro had to get advertising for NSFW boards from different places than the work safe boards. It's also why porn sites tend to use different ad networks that always pop up porn related ads.

Some social media sites will turn off ads on pornographic or controversial content for this reason.

Did the porn ban really do that much damage? I'm waiting for twitter to fall too, even though as much as I hate it, it allows us to know WTF is going on as it happens. The only thing left will be facebook for old people and instagram for the rest of us
You know how some people said Tumblr's devs were some of the dumbest hipsters around? Tumblr's porn filter became notorious for flagging everything as porn, including the examples of content they allowed. It forced all these troons onto Twitter where they could spike the punch bowl with their unique brand of politics and raiding/brigading/dogpiling even more.

I've also noticed more people popping up to call Twitter a Nazi run site because Twitter won't ban the bad people or because it's harder to run them off the site than it was on Tumblr.

I think Tumblr's in its death throes already. They were already having issues before, but when they implemented the porn ban last December, a lot of people left en masse.

There's a reason why Twitter became overrun with furries in the past six months, they migrated from Tumblr because of the porn ban.

Even if Tumblr is synonymous with SJW culture and helped spread the woke zeitgeist, the main attraction was the NSFW content. That was their dirty little secret to their initial success.

Let's be real here, the majority of Tumblr's users and lurkers were in it for stuff they could fap to, whether it be Rule 34, a random thot posting her nudes, or the shady side of the furry fandom.

Unless their new owners allow NSFW content to be posted on there again, Tumblr is not long for this world...
For a long time I didn't even know there was porn on tumblr. Just SJW garbage. But they took a big hit banning it. They should have told Apple to shove it. But I guess Apple was just too big and they went and removed the ap from their store.

Was there a way to still get it though after that? Or would it just not function even if you had it installed? I know the average mobile zombie understands little beyond "tap icon, receive social media". So it's not like I expected them to find a work around. Regular tumblr takes eons to load on my tablet. It must be bad for phones too. I just hate how it forces you into portrait mode, which I loathe for just about anything. Then I have to move my keyboard from the magnet and everything feels positioned weird. It's just so unnatural for me since I am really a desktop user sans desktop at the moment. I guess mobile zombies don't have that issue.

Anyway, totally unsurprising that Tumblr is worth jack now.

Wew lad, is that ever embarrassing.

Seems like these companies are finally starting to realize that you can't make good money off of a social media site simply by its popularity and the retarded angel investors constantly pouring money into it like cement down a sink hole. Is it really any surprise to anyone that nobody is seeing a return investment on any of this hot garbage? Not even Youtube makes a profit, what chance does Tumblr stand?
I don't know what they were thinking at all. But if a lot of your traffic is porn and you ban that, you are torpedoing what little money you are making.

I think Tumblr had a purpose as a SJW quarantine, but when they banned porn/nsfw stuff and a significant portion of those people migrated to much more mainstream social media like Twitter, it just made the dumb virus spread. I'm dreaming of an immediate mercy kill where the entire site is shut down and everyone is locked out, doomed to haunt sad corners of the internet and wail about how oppressed they are. I think it would probably save a lot of young, impressionable minds from getting infected by whatever pronoun-illness-hair colour-psychosis of the week we're at now.

It would still be a shithole where the vermin populace would harass people constantly for posting porn normal people would like.

You'd honestly be better off branding it as a "free speech" forum and letting actual, literal Nazis take it over.

As sad as that is, it is pretty fucking astounding that a single rando could fix the technical problems of a website like tumblr and they can't even fix it themselves.
And it is a perfect example of how utterly fucking cancerous and subhuman the userbase is that their reward to that guy was to drive him off with insane bullshit for literally no reason at all.

The thing about Tumblr is it literally had nothing unique or special to offer, it was as bland of a blog site as you could get. It's really no wonder that they only had one going purpose, if even that.
Lol what's even the fucking point? This is another thing that's stupid about buying social media sites, the new owners don't wanna fuck with anything because they fully buy into the wisdom of the previous owner's choices as all being key parts of the site's success, which is ironic because the whole reason why it was for sale in the first place was due to administrative incompetence.

Oops.

Anyone who buys Wordpress for its "tech" is a fool that deserves every ounce of pain that acquisition would bring.
Maybe by "tech", he meant software or process patents.

First Google result for Automattic patents is this gem: https://patents.justia.com/assignee/automattic-inc

Totally not a spurious patent.

Here's a search for Tumblr patents on that site: https://patents.justia.com/search?q=tumblr

Also totally not spurious.

Not going to bother looking for patent office results (since I'm lazy), but between the ridiculous patents just purchased and the office furniture, I think Wordpress just basically got paid to to acquire Tumblr.

Never mind that anyone old enough to remember the age of telephones also remembers that AT&T never inserted ads you had to sit through before connecting to your Grandma, or blocked you from calling Uncle Pulltab to ask if you can borrow his air compressor because his sexist views on women (because he bought the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader calendar every year) were "not permitted on this diverse and caring network"
Lol nope, there were carriers that did that shit all the time during the 90s, specifically for cell phones. I remember whenever you dialed a number, you had to sit through an audio ad before you were connected and often times your phone calls were dropped just to play an ad that malfunctioned and went mute anyway. I don't remember the specific service provider that we had when back then, it might have been Verizon, but I'm so glad that shit doesn't happen anymore.

You could call it crab bucket logic, but imagine the other crabs are pulling the escaping crab back down because they want to use it as a stair step to the rim. They basically used him as social credit fodder. Nobody can be allowed to be pure and successful at once, you're either the victim or the monster, no heroes allowed.
