Disaster Tumblr being sold to Automattic Inc. (Wordpress) by Verizon for reportedly less than $20 Million, six years after being bought for $1 Billion - Tumblr tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling down

So it seems, I mean their flagbots got both SFW pictures and even their own posts about the porn ban. That had to have been one of the final straws right there.
This also proves that the Tumblr admins were stupid, and the ban on the porno was a desperate attempt at damage control because shit already hit the fan when Apple discovered the pedobear cult in the mobile app.

Edit: Fixed a typo.

They basically nuked the only thing that made the horribly shitty tumblr interface remotely functional, and did this even though most of the people doing it probably used his fucking software.
The old mentality of "you can make this accomplishment but you can't keep it" death of the author shit. I bet you anything that's how they justify it in their heads, that what he did isn't really his, it's everybody's. Or maybe they weren't thinking anything at all and just lash out at anyone not-incompetent.

It's honestly really defeating knowing people think & act this way. It's like there's nothing a person can do right anymore.

Yeah, I just want to underline that point. The physical assets owned by Tumblr are probably worth more than $3 million.
Check out their New York office:
Fancy adjustable desks for everyone, Apple computers (and all the network appliances connecting them together), designer furniture, and so on. It surely adds up.
It wouldn't surprise me if the actual value of Tumblr, the internet site itself, is negative.

EDIT: if you look at the financial statements from when Yahoo bought Tumblr in 2013, they listed $76 million of "tangible assets". A lot of that has surely been stripped and sold off already, but you get the idea. They had about the same number of employees then as now.
This is identical to how etsy went years with absolutely 0 tech/customer support, and would pay somebody to nuke any tech support questions off their forums, while they paid to decorate their Brooklyn HQ as the biggest hipster daycare on the planet, and worked their way up to 100+ employees. All these hipster companies are businesses second, social clubs first.
Seems like every single "app" is doing the exact same thing as the .coms, but thinking they're new/special/have the right idea this time.

Are all of these people under 25? I mean you'd think there was SOMEBODY who would remember what happened 7 years before they started.

The article says less than $20 mil, which might be grossly overestimating its selling price. I've seen other reports that put the sale price at just under $3 million. Which pretty fairly sums up the real world value or rather losses in purchasing a dedicated community infested with SJW's Troons and insane Fujoshits.

I hope they just bought it to get rid of it and liquidate it. Because those are the kind of fire sale prices that justify buying something just to burn it to the ground.

Yeah, but Twitter at the start was also a good idea. It let you follow a person who could post updates, instead of a publication or website. So if you liked an author, instead of keeping track of the 4 magazines and 6 newspapers their articles might appear in, the author could just micro-blog a link to their latest output to their fans.

Remember site-based RSS feeds? You don't see those around much any more. Twitter replaced them with content-based feeds.

And then it rapidly went to shit once people stopped using Twitter for notifications, and started trying to use it for actual communication. The art of human communication itself was set backwards, for the first time in hundreds of years, once people started tweeting their thoughts instead of their content. And the world itself was made a worse place once people started treating tweets (or any social media posts) as the content itself.

I don't know the exact point when Tumblr went to shit, but I'll bet it was some similar inflection point where they started treating the Tumblr posts themselves as important, instead of the content that should have been crafted independently and merely shared on a blogging platform. It's probably a function of the "engagement" metrics, which value the postings over the content; those can be addictive for attention-seekers.
Twitter was never a good idea. The only regular communication that could easily be exchanged at the character limit was insults. From birth it was the interwebz equivalent of throwing rocks through the neighbors windows.

Yes, but it wasn't designed for regular communication. 140 chars is just enough for "My new article in the NYT about foreign policy: http://whatever"

Agree, Twitter is the chain grocer that tries to compete with walmart or Target by adding superfluous general merchandise and automotive sections.

No matter how clean and well stocked, they will never be anything but a drain because grocery stores are fundamentally not designed to sell furniture or tires....

Xkit did make a comeback, mostly because the one thing the userbase could agree on was Tumblr being impossible to use without it on desktop mode.

This promptly started a standoff between the New Xkit devs (xkit guy himself let them use his code iirc but swore off anything else to do with the site) and Tumblr's code chimps in which every new "update" would do its best to break useability plugins. Yahoo had its ads uber alles plan to follow, of course, and Verizon saw no reason to change that.

That said, the site still ran slow as balls on PC, and nobody ever made successful plugins for mobile users.

Since the new owners of Tumblr are not going to undo the changes that helped kill Tumblr such as the porn ban and the issues with the newer interface, I'm beginning to agree with several other posters earlier in the thread that Wordpress is buying Tumblr for pennies on the dollar, not because they want to keep it running, but to gain any tech assets that were owned by Tumblr such as software, specific patents or copyrights, and possibly physical assets as well.

It's very likely that the new management at Tumblr are going to shut it down for good, possibly even by the end of 2019.

Of course, the users will keep migrating to other sites and I have no doubt that someone will open up a new service to fill the same niche Tumblr had in its heyday.

Since we have an entire sub-forum dedicated to Tumblr-specific communities and lolcows, would that mean the Tumblr sub-forum will end up moved to Spergatory and archived like Deagle Nation or the Salt Mine?

Or would it get renamed and readjusted for whatever's going to replace Tumblr?

Someone should make a porn allowed tumblr replacement, hype it up as “tumblr for Naughty Adults: NAmblr”
I think two of them came online after the porn ban. One of them is cumblr and I can't remember what the other one is called.

edit:
There's cumblr, bdsmlr, and blogr.xxx that I've come across since the porn ban. I have no idea what the user numbers/base is like on any of them though.

Porn-based replacements for tumblr pop around every five minutes and while the userbases are getting steady, a lot of those sites often get plagued by issues, tech spergs did a few researches and discovered that there's even scammers trying to get advantage of the tumblr refugees (Cumblr, for example, was dissected on twitter and there's a lot of data-stealing shenanigans on its source code).

In regards to Wordpress buying tumblr for the pennies, it's clearly obvious that they want to get rid of the leftovers so they can scavenge what's usable. Just capitalism at its best.

So they paid $3 million, and got what?

That's $15k per staffer. The company wasn't even worth enough money as a year of poverty level wages to the danger hairs running it. And that's before they take out the value of the hardware, software, and whatever IP they own.

WTF does Tumblr even need 200 people for?
Why would they even want the people working at Tumblr? Even the people who use tumblr know they're all dipshits who don't know how to code or run the website for shit.

It's scary tumblr users moved from a small insular community to a platform where they can actually interact with creators and politicians. A few years ago I always thought Tumblr dying would be best for society, and the stragglers would spread out or drive to even more insular communities a la Resetera. Tumblr users moving to Twitter is basically the worst outcome.

The only upside is Twitter wasn't as suffocating as Tumblr politics were, which means some people actually have to face backlash and disagreements. But the ability to easily harrass people with power and Twitter working to abolish wrongthink is disheartening.
Tumblr freaks have been migrating over to Twitter long before the porn ban, most crazies on the site used both at the same time. The porn ban has done literally nothing to stop the people uploading CP and other porn bots.

I'll miss tumblr because it was a good place to post art and stuff, twitter really sucks as an art platform.

Standard procedure is to keep the "old" staff until you're certain you've extracted everything you need from them (institutional knowledge, IT passwords, etc) before you jettison them into the sun.

Wordpress, I'm certain, is going to close Tumblr in the next few years and try and migrate any Tumblr-only bloggers over to the Wordpress platform - in addition to liquidating all of Tumblr's assets.

You can't revive tumblr, it's dead. Even if you were to reverse the porn ban right now, it's too late. Porn content creators and their communities have already moved on to Pornhub, Twitter, reddit, and other places - there's nothing specific to Tumblr that would drive users back to it now that they've already left. It's the same story for even a lot of the non-porn or porn adjacent communities - there's nothing that tumblr offers that other sites (Newgrounds, DeviantArt, Twitter, reddit, whatever) don't - all it used to offer was an established audience for various communities.

That implies actual institutional knowledge that's useful.

The vermin currently staffing tumblr could be and should be jettisoned as immediately as possible.
