I'll concede that one of the pairings hits upon some of my favorite romance tropes so I'm ambivalent towards their storyline, but they're the pairing that the fans seem to like the least (I guess it doesn't have enough rape or the uke isn't passive enough or some dumb shit like that) so Nakamura doesn't give them much attention, but I guess that's a mixed blessing because Nakamura can't draw worth shit.

Speaking of terrible overly-popular BL manga, if Kinokuniya ever stocks anything that isn't Nakamura's bullshit it's Koisuru Boukun, which is also completely terrible. I'd wager that it's even worse than Junjou Romantica.


I'd love to share anecdotes about yaoi fangirls I've encountered IRL, but despite all the conventions I've been to (at least one a year since 2003), I can't really think of ever coming across any? Dumb anime fans in general, sure - I work security at a certain large convention, it's pretty much my job - but nothing with yaoi fans specifically sticks out to me.

Though I did overhear some girls sperging over Hetalia while at Otakon this year, and though I like Hetalia I don't, as a rule, talk about it with people I don't know because that's just asking for trouble. But then they started talking about how they ship all the Nordic countries with each other and internally I was just like oh hell no not my Nordic babies!!

Oh yeah, and there was one time at Otakon a couple years back when a friend and I went to a panel with the Tiger & Bunny production team, and there were a couple of girls in the row behind us who through the whole think kept sniggering to each other about how Kotetsu and Barnaby are totally doing it with each other and it was really irritating. When the one producer noted how surprised he was that the show appealed to fujoshi and they began giggling like mad I just wanted to turn around and punch them in the face while also lecturing them on the nuances of fujoshidom that have absolutely nothing to do with gay sex. (Like, okay, I can kind of understand the appeal of them together, though I don't buy into it myself, but can we please not pretend that they're anything more than awesome bros in the show proper?? thanks)

I don't like to use the word 'yaoi' for gays couples in anime/manga because that is all I can think of.

When I was in junior high I had a friend that was a weeaboo to the MAX. (Who I do have a lot of crazy stories about. I should send them to weeb horror stories. ) The last year I went to that school she was super in to Axis Powers:Hetaila and did cosplays as Germany. And with her other friend (who was N.Italy.) they did a bunch of photoshots... I don't mind cosplay or APH but it was weird. Lots of holding each other, and almost kissing.
The photos are still on her facebook to this day. I'd be embarrassed if I was her, but I guess she is still a weeb?

One thing I'll never understand about yaoi fangirls, is that they think the best pairings are with two characters THAT FUCKING DESPISE EACHOTHER. I can give a ton of examples, but there are so many it's hard to find out which stands past the rest.

I get the distinct impression that BL manga authors are forced or pressured into including a sex scene (or at least a makeout scene) in every single chapter of their manga, so that their readers don't lose interest due to lack of fap material for a month (or however frequently a given BL anthology magazine comes out). So what's the easiest way to ensure that there's sex in the very first chapter of a serial, despite the characters and their chemistry having hardly developed by that point? Why, rape, of course!

It's a shame that that's how the genre works, because I've seen tons of BL manga that definitely had the potential to be great, if not for the rape/sex shoehorned in from the very start. One in particular comes to mind that was originally meant to be a one-shot, so it was all but required to culminate in sex very quickly, but then it was popular enough to be turned into a serial so it went like ten chapters with this distinct impression that the author was all like, "well shit, now these characters moved way too fast so now I have to keep writing them as crazed sex maniacs." And it was a lovely story aside from the main characters constantly needing to bone each other.

Anyway, I feel like this precedent may have rubbed off on the yaoi fangirls who, in turn, treat their fanworks in the same way.

One BL manga that managed to break the sexiness-every-chapter requirement very well (sometimes the author met the sexiness quota by simply putting in a one-panel flashback to a past kiss or something and just letting the characters develop introspectively), if anyone would like a rec, is Sono Te no Netsu o Kasanete. Definitely the best BL manga I've ever found.

I like Yaoi doujin, I wish there were more Yaoi Hentai videos though, and I mean grown guys, not that Boku no Pico shit. There's a really funny Inuyasha one I read where, Miroku had the hots for Inuyasha, and one night they got it on, so afterwards Miroku is like, "Can me and you really be together?" and Inuyasha basically says, "No this was just sex, because if I did it with Kagome she would get pregnant" lol poor Miroku.
But yeah I like Yaoi, the only kind I have no tolerance for is shota, (pedoforkery).

Yaoi fangirls are goofy, but pretty harmless, I'm friends with a couple. They also drool over Doctor Who, well the new one, not the old doctors from the older series. I wonder if they are disappointed that I am into men, but I look nothing like a Yaoi guy? lol

Oh just to be clear, I KNOW Yaoi is unrealistic as Hell, I just read it like my mom reads goofy romance novels. I like the corny ridiculousness too.

I used to be a bit of a yaoi fan when I was fourteen for about two or three years. Then I realized it's problematic as fuck and that a lot of story lines are dumb. I still ship same sex pairings and like some of the art but I steer away from the fanfiction and BL titles which are published solely because it's all rape and it's so trivialized it actually rubs me up the wrong way because it gives off this impression that guys can't get raped when in actual fact they fucking can and it goes unnoticed. Plus then brattish fangirls say rape and make rape jokes or think rape is awesome because the genre pushes it so much. It has a lot of bad implications about gay relationships too, there are no seme/uke dynamics. Femininity does not mean you are a bottom in a relationship and given all the rape it sort of implies all gay relationships involve rape which obviously is not true but teenage girls seem to take it this way because they can be really impressionable when it comes to the media at times.

I abhor shotacon and think anybody who watches and enjoys it on a regular basis has serious issues. I've seen it once and I was scarred for weeks by that shit. An interesting note about Boku No Pico is it's marketed towards males primarily. Hence why the boys look like girls. Either way, no matter who it's written for guys or girls it's fucking creepy.

I remember buying this indie ebook for my kindle off of Amazon (it was like 80p, cheap entertainment really) and it was a really really badly written yaoi title which took a lot of the themes from Yugi Oh (shy, dorky, protagonist with multicoloured hair, plays some kind of collectiable game competitively, has a rival who is pretty fuckin' nasty) it's basically a ridiculous KabiaxYugi fic with a few names changed. It has a sequel which probably rips off elements from another show I've probably never watched or read or whatever and there's a third due out which is supposed to be about music. I have high suspicisons it'll be a Gravitation rip off or something.

Like you said Himawari it's so hard to find a decent title at all.

Huh a lot of Yaoi I read has consensual Sex, or some just don't have sex at all. I mostly see rape in heterosexual Hentai, and doujinshi. As a gay guy, I sometimes don't know how to feel about Yaoi though because, on one hand its, "Wow gay characters in a manga? who are usually already established characters that I like." but at the same time, gay men actually aren't the target audience, girls are, so I still feel a little odd liking Yaoi. Also like I said they are super unrealistic and never have deep stories, exploring actual gay issues, I would enjoy learning about what gay issues are actually like in Japan, they are wish fulfillment fluff really, and there is room for fluff, but I would really like to see the genre go deeper, and actually have titles aimed at a gay audience, written by gay men. In Fredrick Shodts book on Manga, that he wrote in the 90's, he did write about some manga that actually was aimed at gays, and was realistic, I should try to track down a translation of said manga, but that will probably be hard to find. The way guys are portrayed in Yaoi reminds me of when in say, an American comic, a male writer tries to write a Lesbian character, which usually comes of as Hollywood's version of a Lesbian.

You're under the misconception that were here to criticize yaoi doujinshi, I have never read any because I'm cis scum. I don't care if someone likes yaoi or not. I will say is most of the fan base is absolutely out of their fucking minds. Stuff like this:

What you're gonna want to look for is called "bara," not yaoi or BL. There are probably some bara scanlations floating around here and there, but I'm betting you're mostly going to find Kusomiso Technique.

That depends, most bara tends to be on the extreme opposite of the girly boys look. Personally, I'm not a fan of the whole beefcake guys, luckily though most yaoi fangirls are the same way, so the bara subcategory is less spergy.
