Well, I'm not going to go on a tirade about what a horrible drug this is, because we all know it. It's been stated several times in this thread, so I know I would only be repeating myself. I'm also not going to go on a tirade about people in general who do drugs and need to get clean; I can't even seem to quit smoking or drinking soda, and they're both dangerous as I'm diabetic. My soda intake has been vastly reduced but still...If I can't conquer that, then I don't feel it's right for me to criticize someone for not being able to quit drugs.

However, meth has always scared the living shit out of me. When I took a drug class back in college, my professor had a good way of saying it, "If this person is still in high school and probably didn't pass chemistry, do you really trust them to provide a drug that's safe?"

Just a different perspective.

I'm also glad I found this site, because I honestly had no idea Tumblr had shit like this on it. I should've known I guess, but since I don't use the site much I was just a little bit suprised. (I only say a little bit, because not much truly shocks me anymore.)

They've definitely heard it, but they probably view it the way we view anti-drug PSAs from the 80's on how pot will like, totally kill you.

They think they know better and that the people saying it's dangerous are just pointing to a few outliers and they can totally handle it.

They're not even a hundred percent wrong about that. Meth is a very addictive drug and functional addiction is rare and very short-lived compared to heroin, but it still doesn't have the magical life-destroying facemelting properties that people seem to think it does, that get given as fact even in today's drug PSAs. Anti-meth campaigns continue to stretch the truth and be willfully disingenuous, despite having a fucking plethora of information they could use and still make meth look terrifyingly dangerous. These kids are looking for reasons to disbelieve those campaigns, so catching out a single lie or overstatement of fact gives them the excuse they need to ignore everything else.

I mean, it's not reefer madness levels of bullshit, but contemporary anti-meth campaigns are still less than 100% above-board and truthful, and that's all it takes for people who've already decided what they want to believe and are just looking for the slimmest excuse to believe it.

As someone with experience just with using adderal as prescribed, I can vouch that stims are some seriously fucked up shit. Even adderal will fuck you up.

Stims feel really good when you're high, but the instant they start wearing off your mood turns to shit and it get worse the longer you go on. Honestly stims are something that can be launched into the sun for all I care. At least then bored white suburban kids wouldn't be able to get their hands on them.

That being said, because a lot of these communities are isolated, they provide a convenient echo-chamber for those who are in those circles and it only helps to cement these ideas they have about being totally in control about their drug use. I suspect a lot of these users were already using meth when they got into these communities in the first place, and were just seeking out those who also used.

Why do you think there is not only a Meth community, but a Meth DATING community? Why seek out other meth users to date?

Certainly more than enough to OD, & waaaay too much for a beginner. That doesn't make sense though, because they don't look anything like typical speedballin, junked out tweakers.

I knew guys who were done with it but still spoke romantically about it. They were typically manufacturing it and that's what is so shitty about it. To be a kingpin normally you have to have a big hookup or at least an expensive lab but anyone can go become a bigtime meth producer.

. When you smoke meth, almost no smoke is exhaled, and certainly not big billowing tobacco-style clouds like that.

I also thought it was strange these guys were wasting a perfectly good mouthful of meth for a photo.

They never fucking learn I remember when i first started using drugs probably you could have gotten me to use anything because I didn't believe the shit in highschool and then I got interested enough to start reading about it. Sure I ended up eating a handful of nutmegs and drinking cough syrup but at least I didn't start doing crack and speed.

Our stereotypes of addiction are pretty iffy. It's not the chemical that makes you addicted, but the societal limitations your addiction triggers. Consider how extensively we prescribe diamorphine (heroin) in medicine. Do we worry about grannies recovering from hip replacements becoming junkies? Like, seriously, why aren't we putting surgery recovery patients on police watches to catch them trying to score some junk from the street?

These tumblr dipshits might be ruining their lives. I can't tell. But "lol, they're doing drugs" isn't as interesting a thought as "why is this edgy bullshit so edgy?"

It's thumbing their nose at mainstream society for a start, but I'd say anything associated with self-destruction also appeals to the Freudian death-drive we all seem to have buried somewhere deep inside us, and that drive is strong and hard when you're a dumbass kid who feels immortal and is still trying to find your place in the world. Self-harm, streetfighting, drug abuse, suicide ideation ; they all appeal to that primal urge to push up against your own mortality, and against society's expectations. This just seems to be how they've chosen to flirt with the reaper in their own safe controllable little way ; it makes them feel alive in ways they can't properly communicate because the words don't exist for it. They're subconsciously trying to show other people what they feel, or maybe trying to get a better understanding of it themselves because our language fails to do justice to concepts and feelings like these.

I'm not so old yet that I don't understand them, to some extent. And I think in a year the vast majority of these kids will have moved on and just laugh with embarrassment if this is ever mentioned.

A lot of the "faces of meth" type pictures, other than being cherry picked for awfulness, are also indicative of side effects from the nasty impurities from shitty cooks by retarded rednecks cooking it in trailer parks and the like. For instance, the skin abnormalities are often the result of nasty toxins basically working their way out through the pores. Throw in that the meth itself exacerbates itching and can induce obsessive behavior and you end up with nasty scabs that people pick at constantly for hours.

Then the teeth. You have people who just don't eat anything but candy and soda, then they pass out after a days-long run, on their back with their dry mouth open, sometimes for 24 hours straight. That doesn't do your teeth any favors.

Same with the heroin skeletons. People who lose interest in eating and don't make an effort to keep their body fed.

Many of these extreme ill effects are the result of the illegality of the substances and the resultant irregular supply and quality of them.

These tumblrinas glorifying it, though, make it more likely that people who buy into this bullshit will get deeper into meth and possible addiction than they otherwise would have. Meth may not be as bad as shooting krokodil into your eyeballs, but it's pretty bad and it's not smoking weed or drinking a couple of beers.

I'm not saying that abusing meth doesn't carry a chance of ruining a perfectly salvageable life ; one unlucky day and you can get a poison batch, or a contaminated needle, or stabbed by another tweaker. Of course those risks exist. But as for the people who burn it so hard and show such little regard to maintaining their health that they end up on a Faces of Meth poster ; those people had a demon in them that was going to destroy them one way or another. If it wasn't meth it would have been something else. Those people are slow suicides, and there's no point pretending they were perfectly happy, healthy, and destined for normal lives until the meth got to them.

A long-standing tradition at my office is that, if you end up having to work after normal hours, you gather around and play a prison, crime, or mental health documentary while everyone works. One of my favorites is Montana Meth (2006). Many of you seem well-informed, but it's worth watching, if only for the bleak landscapes that frankly help me sympathize a little with the featured users.

Well this thread has taught me much more about meth than I ever needed to know. It's interesting for sure to see information about it outside of the Montana Meth Project psa's and the brief mentions I have seen in my Psych textbooks. It makes sense that they overexaggerate the effects, but I still think it's not a good idea to be shooting this stuff up your arm.

Interesting how the demographics of meth users vary so widely. The edgy white teenagers here in South Africa use cat (methcathinone) more on this level, tik (methamphetamine) use is more prolific in the townships as far as I know...

This thread reminds me of a fairly recent story from work, that a male nurse in my building was found ripping items out of the drug repository and selling/trading them. Cocaine was actually one of the items (it's in liquid form and used as an anesthetic) that was missing.

After being let go from his job, a friend found out what happened.

It's a really good look at all the concepts ya'll been talking about. It's written from his own perspective as someone coming off a decade of heavy heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine addiction.

It's also scary as fuck. He makes Hunter S. Thompson look like a kid with a box of gumdrops.
