Twin Galaxies is a organization dating back from the "golden age" of arcade gaming dedicated to recording high scores and peak performance of autists from the 80s up until today.​

Besides keeping track of "official" high scores (for a time in concert with Guiness World Records) it also established (in 1983) the "U.S. National Video Game Team" which was the first of its kind.

Twin Galaxies is an interesting thing to talk about because it predated widespread internet access by decades and kinda sorta still exists today. Many of the people involved with Twin Galaxies in the 1980s would've obviously been shitposted on this very forum or others if they'd been born a bit later.

It's because of TG's unique property of having involved vidya and survived a period of almost 4 decades. TG's story features many unique characters, arrests for pedophilis and people who would probably have had their own dedicated threads here had YouTube existed 30 years ago.

(I'm making this a separate post because it relates to the current slapfight surrounding Twin Galaxies)

TLDR Todd Rogers was a member of the US vidya team in the 80s and overtime ended up having 1700+ undocumented scores in Twin Galaxies database. Due to the wave of autistic screeching his scores have recently been removed and he is banned for life.

He got caught out because he claimed a high score in the game "Dragster" which seems actually impossible to achieve. This has lead to people trying to play the game themselves for hours on end and even had comment from the creator of the game itself:

I met Walter and Billy at the Austin Classic Games Expo last year. Their panel was kind of surreal in a sense because both of them talked a lot but I can't really remember about what? Walter showed some trailers for the movies King of Kong and Chasing Ghosts (King of Kong is like a decade old by this point) and for the most part him and Billy just kind of verbally shitposted about each other on stage. Walter awarded a couple of other guests at the convention with those trading cards, one of them being Pat the NES Punk (who was at the convention promoting his recent book) as well as a woman who recently obtained a world record score in Root Beer Tapper. Their panel was more or less equivalent to listening to grandpa tell war stories except instead it was some guys sharing memories about the glory days of arcade gaming. Walter was making a big deal about the upcoming "reshoot" of the famous world record gamers photo (the second picture in the OP) and said we were all welcome to come see them take the new picture, but they were doing it like seven states away so realistically no one was probably going to be there.

I chatted with them for a bit at their table afterward and Billy sort of flirted with me, but to me I just thought he was bring friendly (though in the past I've mentioned that I am painfully socially oblivious so I could be wrong). Walter was sort of ambivalent and just liked to chat. He mentioned a few jobs he'd had before/while working with Twin Galaxies, one of which was reselling old high school yearbooks that featured celebrities in them, namely Farrah Fawcett. Billy had his hot sauce for sale along with signed posters and headshots, they were for sale as a "pick 3 for $20" thing. I got some hot sauce and a signed headshot of Billy mostly for novelty's sake.

The hot sauce is nothing special by the way. It's just hot sauce. I am like 90% certain Billy's sauces are just vanity labels that are applied to existing products though, because googling "Billy Mitchell hot sauce" brings up this place called Rickey's as the first result and they just so happen to offer hot sauce with custom labels. (It is possible, however, that Billy owns this company so technically he might still be making the sauce but I don't actually know.)

Right. Stuff like ARPA and BITnet. There were even search engines like archie and veronica to search content. Gopher was a sort of proto-web mostly without graphical content.

The actual protocols existed, though, since the '70s. Arguably the '60s if you count the really tiny number of nodes then on the experimental ARPAnet project before it adopted TCP/IP.
