A lot of this thread reads like a Ukrainian wet dream. The US and Russia will not engage in open conflict because it's not profitable to either aging plutocrat in charge. Don't forget that both Hillary and Joe are perfectly happy to do business with Putin, and so are most of the wealthier EU states. Remember, Joe green-lit Putin's pipeline just recently, striking a rather insulting blow to the gas bandits over in Ukraine.

It is a bit odd to even discuss the idea of 2 superpowers actually having a real war - I mean it just can not actually ever happen. Just proxy wars backing one side against another is all there will ever be.
These militaries the USA, China, the UK, France, Germany, Russia have etc, are for proxy wars only or against small countries.
An actual war with China or Russia is simply a no-win situation from the start - any side can entirely destroy the other side no matter what one does on a first strike. A conventional war would soon escalate to Nuclear very quickly.
All hold certain submarines for the sole, express and definitive purpose of launching a strike in the event of destruction of the motherland and all are entirely capable of delivering.

It never has. And while our leaders may seem different from a local view, from an external observation the USA moves in certain ways and regardless of Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump or Biden it has been pretty much the same. We think it looks different but from the outside it is pretty much par of the course whoever is at the helm.

It would be very sudden and strange for Ukraine to suddenly announce it's joining NATO. They're expecting conflict with Russia which would incentivise NATO membership, bit to make a sudden decision is weird. I'm skeptical

It doesn't matter if the US could clean Russia's clock in a war. It would rip the US apart at home. Look how divided the USA is now politically. The US hasn't been able to fight and win a real war since they lost Vietnam. They couldn't even close the deal on Iraq when they had Saddam on the ropes in the 90s. There is no political will to fight an classic hot war that 100's or 1000's die in. Especially over someplace no one could find on map.
Russia may be a rusting shell of it's former self but they are still more powerful then Afghanistan, Iran, or any other ME shithole that the US hasn't been able to tame. Then add the fact that Russia actually still has the power to nuke the US and the EU. Political suicide for the democrats.

The Nazis made an exception for Ukrainians who were willing to ally with them against the Soviets and realized they were actually aryan and not slavs at all. Their whole "racial purity" thing was pretty flexible if there was a strategic advantage to be gained.
