What US vital interest would be remotely threatened if Russia overran all of the Ukraine tomorrow and annexed it the day after that? 'Cuz I'm hard-pressed to to think of any.

Whenever Russia will be able to offer something beneficial to Ukraine that will let it (even in theory) get out of the corruption hole it is in, then it'll be the time Ukraine will "return to the fold".
It's up to Ukraine to get out of their own corruption hole and maybe then they'll be able to offer Russia something to make it worthwhile to accept them. Nobody owes you shit.

Nothing to do with "Ukrainian identity," whatever that is. Certain parts of what is now Ukraine have been poor and uneducated for hundreds of years, simple as that. Trying to pretend they're European is simply laughable. Same applies to the Baltics too.
