All this is a combination of posturing and brinksmanship. Aside from the usual skirmishes in Dombass, no large military operations outside that area are ever going to happen. Both the US and Russia are not going to risk causing a conventional war over Ukraine. Sadly most people fail to understand how diplomacy works past 1945.

Doubt Ukraine qualifies, in the first place. Various military/governmental/budgetary qualifications to meet.

Putin's been doing all he can to re-establish that buffer zone between Russia and Europe. Ukraine is an essential part of that zone, in his eyes. Putin doesn't even like the Baltic countries independent, and he works hard to keep Belarus close.

Having said that, Ukraine got fucked over when the USSR collapsed. Lots of Soviet nuclear weapons/delivery systems on Ukrainian soil. Ukraine gave them up in return for security and financial guarantees.

The rhetoric that is being told on that doesn't seem to be frequently repeated, is that whatever country joins NATO, has mandatory military bases and missile bases set up as part of the deal. Naturally, Russia wants buffer zones to keep the military bases as far away from their borders as possible, yes, that means having good relationships with neighbours, or at least have them not be part of NATO. Russia isn't encroaching itself across the globe using other countries convenient military alliances to extend their striking capabilities way past their own natural borders, with the goal of encroaching itself closer and closer to the United States. Yet that exact scenario is being played out via NATO against Russia.

If Ukraine joins NATO, the average US strategic missile would be within 7 to 9 minutes away from striking Moscow. Think about that for a moment. Imagine Russia establishing missile bases not even in Cuba, but on the US/Mexico border. Can you even begin to imagine the uproar that would cause? Yet that is the goal with the constant NATO encroachment upon Russia's borders. Whichever way you spin it, no one wants another superpower's military that god damn close to their borders, especially not the capital and major cities.

Will they do it? I have no idea, I'm not an armchair general, but it's easy to point fingers at Russia and go 'look at those dirty commies, they're mobilizng their troops inside their borders' when there is a very real threat to the nation's security being played out in plain sight, and ordinary Joe doesn't even think about the consequences and the tensions being created by these actions.
