Never got very far in it, primarily because I just haven't played it much, but it does seem like a cool game.

They definitely did a good job emulating the style of games like the original Fallout I think.

I bought it for $2 on sale and tried it twice. It's pretty trash. I love og fallout but underrail is a miss for me.
I have a list of grievances but let me just say, naming places lower underrail and upper underrail is confusing as fuck.

Did an INT build and crafted my own plasma pistol with the settings cranked so high it would melt anything that wasn't a robot in one shot. Really love the game and its writing. Hope we get a sequel someday with some of the rougher points ironed out.

On my to-play list for quite some time. Waiting for a proper day I guess. So far started, played for a while, got to a part where you hunt some cave rabbits and it failed to capture me the way Fallouts or Arcanum did.

I heard laser was better but I'm not taking chances on DOMINATING.

You missed the psi-beetles. A shame.

Tried it, didn't like it. The massive amount of backtracking is exacerbated by the huge numbers of inexplicably long loading screens and it all just makes it aggravating. There's no excuse for such long loading times in such a technically and graphically basic game. The interface is shit, aiming at the right square can be a pixel hunt and if you get it wrong you drop a grenade at your feet and blow yourself to bits. In fact it's just way too easy in general to get killed because you mis-read the unclear interface rather than because you made a tactical mistake, which isn't fun at all. After the game opens up a bit (this is like 10 hours in) there's no level scaling for the quests nor any indication of how difficult they are - the only way to find out if a quest is suitable for your character level is to accept them and see if the first enemy melts you into goo.

The combat system is also very exploitable/cheeseable, in particular you can leave an area during combat if it's going badly, heal up and re-buff in the next room then go back in, where the enemies will be in the exact state you left them in as if time had frozen while you were napping in the next room. However that can just get you into bigger trouble later on, cheese your way through a quest you have no right to complete then realise that the bossfight can't be cheesed and you're doomed. Also your build has to be 100% optimal to make any real progress, so your choices are to either wade through the autism on the wiki and pick up a build from there, or do it blind and be forced to restart when you find that you put one stat point in the wrong thing. Not every Fallout 1/2 build was viable, but you at least had room to experiment or make a build that wasn't completely min-maxed to one combat style.

I'm all for "old school" (that's why I bought it) but this is just "old-fashioned". Hard games are good, but Underrail often just feels arbitrary and unfair. It takes a lot of bad things about the old Fallouts and similar games (crap interface, unfair and random difficulty spikes, over-long, tedious dungeons with loads of backtracking) and adds some new bad things as well (wonky quest design, lack of interesting characters, the over-importance of build optimisation, no party/companions, those fucking loading times - I swear Fallout 1 had better performance on my 1999 Celeron laptop).

I really wanted to like it but after 20 hours I just couldn't take it any more.
