I've traveled a bit, most all of the east coast of the US most of west some island hopping and leaf land mostly.

But i thought a few cheaper less known places to share.

Maine: go in summer its great for nature Arcadia national park is amazing and from all my times in parks only surpassed by the very different Yosemite. the trails can be intense or laid back bar harbor is cool its like stepping into 1950. Portland is kinda funky too. Everyone was a kind proud mainer just lots of great times spent there.

Cleveland Ohio
Up and coming. Food beer sports and the rock and roll hall of fame. Again do this in the summer but if you like culture shopping eating beer sports you name it they have it.

Asheville North Carolina.
This is creeping up in price but very funky, arty funky. In a good way. Still lots of nature near by, beer (see a theme here?) As well as quality eating.

Where are ypur cheap travel or hidden gems people should check fellow kiwi?

I used to live near Asheville. Can confirm it’s pretty chill, and has good beer.

If I had to pick my favorite place, I guess it would be Trinidad, CO.

Small town, good buds, near to a large national park. (Note: it is still illegal to bring the buds to the park. So be wary.)

If you're gonna go to an Islamic nation, just do coastal Morocco or urban Jordan. Both are nice, the people are normally cool with Americans and you'll be safe

Monaco doesn't get many Americans, but it should. Its a really great way to kill a weekend when you're stuck in France during the winter and its not as pricey as you'd expect.

Ruidoso New Mexico is gorgeous, it's in the middle of nowhere but there's a lot of horse racing nearby so it attracts crazy money in the spring and summer, but dies off in the fall and winter, where you can rent a really nice cabin for under $100 a night. The town itself is built around tourism too so there's plenty to do from hikes around their crate lake, to hunting, fishing, watching shows at the nearby Indian Casino and just enjoying a really laid back town

San Diego is probably the least appreciated place in California, but you can vacation out there cheaper than you'd expect, things like VRBO and airBNB have really dropped the rental and hotel market's prices super low whenever a major convention isn't in town. Tons of amusement parks, the world class zoo and wild animal park as well as the best beaches in that state. And if you've ever wanted to go on an aircraft carrier,t he Midway is a floating museum in the middle of downtown that is a lot of fun for the whole family. Whenever Im in town with friends or family we always hit that one up because its really unique and it gets me to swap sea stories with them as well as hear the crazy shit the retired veterans who serve on the ship as docents have to say, Plus the fantail restaurant serves well priced Sam Adams.

Jekyll Island in Georgia is really pretty with nice beaches and a really good water park and it doesn't get many non-locals, so its an experience.

Southern Utah is really pretty and the locals are sweet. Tons of good Bed and Breakfasts and places to hike

This. If you ever take a trip to the Grand Canyon (or Vegas for that matter) make sure to pencil in a couple days screwing around at Arches/Zion/BryceCanyon along the way. Utah in general is pretty great with the Salt Flats, Flaming Gorge, and Dinosaur up in the north. It is severely underrated as a vacation destination.

If you like concentrated tacky in the middle of some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, I recommend Gatlinburg, TN. It's close to Pigeon Forge if you want to hit up Dollywood (never been to Dollywood myself but I've heard good things)

I was gonna say Gatlinburg, too. I haven't been there since the fire, though. Might be different now. I didn't really like Dollywood personally. There's definitely an audience for that place but it's not me, lol. If it sounds fun to you it probably will be but if it doesn't you'll just be bored.

Antigua-one of the few places infested with island niggers that's almost completely safe with locals that are actually nice and kind.

A couple of places in the US that I've loved:

Savannah, GA - Great restaurants, Forsyth Park is gorgeous, and there's a surprising amount of things to do around there.

Moab, UT - Despite being close to two huge US national parks (Canyonlands and Arches), I never really hear anyone talk about Moab. If you love hiking or biking, it's a must. Plus, if you get sick of the desert, the La Salle Mountains aren't too far.

Edmonton Alberta.
Seriously, the west edmonton mall is pretty damn good with a lot of stuff with an amusement park and a water park in it. there's fort edmonton park, there's old strathcona that has things like haunted walks and stuff, royal Alberta museum, and other seasonal things. Calgary is only more well-known as a tourist hotspot because of the Calgary stampede.

If you're really big on the outdoorsy stuff, but hate the "manufactured" kind of outdoorsy stuff that's often full of light pollution and neatly groomed trails you can't really enjoy offroading or hiking without some beaurocrat or official up your ass, check out the swan hills and whitecourt area. Tonnes of wilderness and places to go out ATVing or 4x4ing, hike, hunt, fish, camp, and all that stuff. camped up there a few years ago, and the camping was awesome. just bring lots of blankets if you camp up there, because it can get a little cold at night. because of how far away from cities and big tows it is, you get to see a night sky you wouldn't be able to see anywhere else.

A friend of mine bought a rental house up there since it's huge with off roaders. In the 5 years he's owned it, 3 times locals have broken in and trashed it or used a stolen card to rent it before cleaning it out of all the stuff inside. That place is lousy with meth and heroin using white trash

You're right. As much as I love going out there, the meth heads have really gotten out of control. So I guess add a fat asterisk to it.

Solvang, California. The entire place is a cozy little Danish village. Great architecture and gorgeous scenery.

It's so pretty at Christmas time.

Hearst Castle in San Simeon/Morro Bay.

William Randolph Hearst's home. It's worth touring just to see the design and his gothic and medieval studies.

At certain times you can go to their costume parties and wear 1920's outfits. If you're a fan of architecture it's a great trip. That guy had one badass castle..
