@WanderingVagabond: Ach, man, do it! It's better than anything else Toriyama ever did.

Though if you don't like toilet humor, be warned it goes to places where not even the most extreme examples of American toilet humor go...

They put out the manga in English and it seems to no longer be in print. I can't even find a copy...

I read and watch Gintama. Any type of humor is funny to me as long as its done right. I think VizMedia may reprint the series. I haven't read any news regarding it though.

I think Eva is fucking stupid. I mean, I liked the whole mecha deconstruction where a teenager is thrown into a robot and doesn't automatically become da best pairoto evar and has to deal with horrible world-destroying abominations from the moon as well as everyone being an asshole to him because in the end he's little more than a kid in a robot to them. It's a pretty cool concept, I'll give it that. But then it gets to, and I'm aware I might get mauled for this. Asuka and Rei.

Dear god, Asuka and Rei. Did Anno really have to make two characters whose entire purpose is to piss of otaku waifushitters? And what's better, actually fail at it since they ate it all up in the end? They come off more as walking parodies than characters. I like seeing angry otaku as much as the next guy, but I think the message Anno tries to send with them completely derails the whole thing. Like, hey, huhuh, Shinji helped Asuka kill the big thing but she was a total bitch to him, really shatters your worldview, huh, smelly otakus? I think Rei does contribute to the supposed plot in the end, but all Asuka does is be there and be a bitch with unrealistic social problems because critique. And it all serves to warp Shinki from a deconstruction of a mecha protagonist to a stand-in for the horrible, horrible audience because of fucking course you're horrible, you want to jack it to these anime stereotypes, look how horrible you are! RHAARGH! Horrible!

The whole SEELE conspiracy felt stupid, too. I don't get what was even the point of it.

I won't say much about the ending(s). The team was pissed and tried to piss off the audience. Twice. Boring as shit, too. As amusing as the clapping scene and the world ending with pop music in the background were, nothing much else happens and there's no real conclusion just to add to the piss off rollercoaster.

I'll just blindfold myself for the firing squad now.

Personally, I think the best thing about Eva is the way it became a huge cash cow. It's supposed to be super edgy and a critique of mecha anime and shit, but it's basically turned into the thing it was supposed to deconstruct - a mindless excuse to sell fap material to otaku. I was in Japan when one of the Rebuild movies was coming out, and there was merchandise everywhere. There was even some casino with a multi-story poster of the characters. Much edgy, such commentary, wow

When I watched it, Rei was the only character I could stand. She has zero personality, as opposed to everyone else who has a terrible personality.

Honestly, everything about the show sucked, from from the story, to the characters and their "motives" and even some of the technical aspects were horrid like the oft-static animation (at least in the series, the movie fared a bit better in that department) and the shitty voice acting in both English and Japanese. The only good parts I felt were the designs and the opening theme. And even those I don't care for too much.

So no, you're (not) alone in that statement.* And here's another one I have to add- Gainax can go suck a big one. I can't really get into any of their productions (both before and after Eva) and they all feel like cash grabs with shinny graphics and jailbait. I don't get why they're popular when they're really nothing to write home about and really pervy most of the time.

*I apologize for the joke, I really do.

I pretty much have the same sentiments you do. The fact is Eva should've ended like it should have. It was supposed to be the thing that Anno had to let go due to his depression. The fact that Anno's depressed again (citation needed;have to find source) is the reason why the franchise should've ended in the mid 90s but the manga kept going since. That being said Asuka and Rei could've been reflections of women Anno knew in his teen days. I thought Asuka was female Shinji. Her childhood was as fucked as his but more deeper wounds in place. I think the drawings in the last half of the series and EOE speaks volumes.

Like fuck, I know children can draw bizarre shit sometimes, but those drawings. I can't unsee that.

Knowing that Rei is an alien version Yui Ikari is pretty fucked up altogether. That being said Eva was a cash cow from the start based on how it developed.

Honestly, everything about the show sucked, from from the story, to the characters and their "motives" and even some of the technical aspects were horrid like the oft-static animation (at least in the series, the movie fared a bit better in that department) and the shitty voice acting in both English and Japanese. The only thing from Gainax that's decent is Gurren Lagann (imo anyway). I thought the voice acting was okay in both English and Japanese. Somewhat a fan of Megumi Hayashibara and Fumihiko Tachiki. I actually like that joke. Good one.

I'm going to agree that STEELE should of have more focus to be honest. The show never goes into a lot of background about them. We don't even know a lot about the person running the whole thing. Even the Rebuilds missed a chance to expend more about them.

SEELE was extremely underdeveloped. I was disappointed the first time around and wanted to know why they cared so much about the 3rd Impact. I also thought Gendo was underdeveloped as well. I'm sure he's fleshed out in the manga version. I didn't care much about the Rebuilds. I hate reboots (unless done right).

I don't really dislike Asuka and Rei for their characters. I dislike them for the reason they're those characters. It's like pandering but in reverse.
Personally, I would have focused more on the deconstruction aspect more than the REMOVE WEEB one. There was great potential for exploring the little importance people give to the pilot itself in comparison to the robot. Like, Gundam isn't iconic because of Amuro or Heero or Loran. It's iconic because of their big heroic white and blue robots that kick the everloving shit out of everything else. In other shows, sometimes the robots even have faces, sometimes ones that move. It almost feels like the robot is the true hero and that the pilot is only there to fill in screentime between fights. Because mecha became a genre geared mostly towards selling toy robots, they have to look cool and heroic so the kids will want to buy.

There was great potential for that in here with the Evangelions themselves. They're the big freaky things that can stop the other big freaky things and all you need to get them working is to shove the right kid in them. Easy, right? Especially when all life on the planet is at stake. But these robots aren't heroic. Oh, no. They're even worse than the creepy-ass things they fight. Underneath those slick, cool designs they're actually fucking monsters that will go on a rampage if the kid's puberty angst happens to kick in, which it most definitely will because puberty works like that. And adults are mostly worried about the kid because they need the kid to pilot the robot, not because the kid has issues.

There was lots of potential for Eva to turn the mecha genre completely on its head. Which it kinda did, anyway, but not to the extent it could have. All that I've said IS there, but no one cared enough to truly explore it because they were too busy stroking their otaku hate boners.

I did like TTGL, too. It kinda pisses me off that everything nowadays apparently needs to have some sort of dark twist or hidden depth to it. It was far from perfect but it was a nice little thing that plays itself completely straight, and sometimes keeping it simple just works.

As far as I know Gendo's whole character is that he wants to bring his wife back by fucking up the world because I guess that's how it works? And he doesn't give a rat's ass about his son, but that's pretty obvious.
In the second Rebuild he seems to get some development and actually care about Shinji a bit but it's all just bait and switch for the 3rd one where everything and everyone becomes a shit again.

Anyhow, I think that's enough Eva for me.

Well I already knew about him wanting to bring Yui back. But everything else about him was underdeveloped. Why was he the way he was? Why did Gendo take Yui's last name? (I'm not sure how the Japanese feels about men taking their wife's last name, same with American culture since I'm an American). I feel most factors of Eva was underdeveloped. Then again I don't think people would handle another 26 episodes of Eva. 26 episodes is more than enough.

EDIT: Don't want to make a double post. I think the Tenchi franchise should've ended with Tenchi in Tokyo. While I didn't get past the first episode of GXP, I heard it wasn't that great. I haven't seen Geminar yet and read it's synopsis and find it meh.

As far as unpopular opinions go, dubs aren't that bad at least when considering this:
Other than that, anime isn't special. I remember having a conversation with someone in how they found one weeb annoying because said weeb thinks anime is mature. I will say, through this clip, anime isn't really mature so much as having edgy stuff (blood and violence isn't always mature, not when it just comes off as edgy).

White knight mode activated.

In regards to Higurashi, it doesn't really use gore to be edgy. It's all about the psychological horror. In that instance, for example,
the girl doing the killing was practically pushed to her breaking point and was overcome with hatred and jealousy.
It's not exactly about being mature or deep. I also already addressed this with Elfen Lied.

Series like these will attract the edgy fans, sure, but it's not like that was their intention. Though I can't speak for all of them. (Blood-C fits the edgy mold more, IMHO.)

-Dragonball Z is one of the most overrated animes I've seen. Also, Toriyama is an about average character designer when it comes to doing people. He just rips off his own designs (see Lucca from Chrono Trigger and the robot girl from Dr. Sump.)

-I fucking hate Tsundares with a passion.

-Chad's the best character in Bleach, which I never really got into.

-I tried to watch Evangelion, but I just couldn't stand the three main characters and stopped watching after about two episodes.

-FLCL is not funny. (I've seen that the show is a bit polarizing.)

-Since English dubs are getting better, I now like them more than the original voices.

Wouldn't that be the same for any other manga artist? Check out Tite Kubo's Zombie Powder and Nobuhiro Watsuki's Buso Renkin.

This is more of an observation but how is Kill la Kill considered edgy? I've seen Ryuko get associated with Shadow and Reboot Dante for some reason.

Very sure it's because she looks like Shadow fanart you'd find on deviantart, or at least that is what started it as far as I remember. I don't have it on hand but people have made a few funny points about how similar Ryuko and Shadow are as characters since the show ended.

Even liking Evangelion myself, I thought the Rebuilds missed a lot of chances to become pretty good. It seems that the team lost their focus and can't decide which route to go too. The first two did the whole, it's the same with some noticeable differences and 3.0 threw all of that out of the window, it's kind of a mess. Some characters don't have a lot of screentime with some like Mari has like nothing, again throwing out what the first two films came up with, and they missed a chance to expend on STEELE. Now the fourth maybe final film has to end everything in a somewhat sensible conclusion. I'm keeping a open mind through kind of disappointed with the team. On the bright side, at least the music been pretty good.

I'm big on .hack overall, but I can't get into SIGN. I watched the whole series couple of times, but I can't get into the characters. I don't know why, but they weren't that interesting for me.
