Wendy is a beaten woman though and in both the film and book, had all the mannerisms of one.

King goes back and forth for me, either a good book to read on the train or a terrible book to get pissed that I read. I usually read the whole book though.

excuse my double part

That might be true about Wendy but she’s still cast in the mold of his ideal woman.

If she didn’t have all the qualifiers that I listed she’d be regulated to being ONLY a blubbering mess.

I strongly disagree and think that a classical education incorporating Greek and Roman epics as well as Biblical and Western canon is helpful in not just understanding western culture and history but a great deal of modern literature as well. Not saying that dead authors are better, but having an understanding of the basic plot of Hamlet or Paradise Lost means that common references won't fly over your head.

It IS really hard to make this shit palatable to people that just want to browse Snapchat and play Fortnite though.
If you want people to read classics you have to put it in plain English they can read. Nobody wants to parse a book that makes them feel stupid for failing to comprehend it.

If you dumbed them down they wouldn't be classics any more and there wouldn't be any point to bothering with them because you wouldn't learn anything from them.

I don't know. I got a lot of enjoyment reading a version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" where the left page had the Shakespearian dialogue, with the right side in a more modern English, with notes about the slang/how the actors would've staged it/etc. It really made me understand the references better having a side by side comparison.

Never could find any other plays done the same way at the library.

InterWorld (the series with a kid named Joey as the main protagonist) is the worst book series I've ever read. While the plots are somewhat decent, the characters are all mostly bland cardboard cutouts, the cliffhanger at the end of the first book was never addressed, and the reason as to why Joey travelled to another universe for the first time (he was taken there through some mysterious green mist) was NEVER EXPLAINED.

Akata Witch (I haven't read the second book, only the first one, so Sunny [the main character] could develop more in the second book.) has a mediocre main character who is just a Harry Potter clone, but her parents (who are supposed to be the equivalent of the Dursleys in Harry Potter) are far more believable than the Dursleys, TBH. They're not mindlessly evil pricks, even though they (especially the father) can take their discipline too far.

Coiling Dragon Book 1 is a fascinating character study. Linley is an amazing and unique protagonist who is a genius in the magical arts, but finds out that fame isn't all it's cracked up to be. He goes through struggle (both emotional and physical) to become a man. I haven't fully read any of the other books, though.

I genuinely don't get how people can say that Harry Potter is a good book series with a straight face.
I will never really understand people who unironically dislike Harry Potter. I've seen all the movies (except for the latest Fantastic Beasts), but I've only read the first two books, so if there's something big I'm missing, let me know.

While it does have some minor issues (like the wizards being a little TOO detached from the Muggle world, and the previously mentioned EVIL GUARDIAN FIGURES), it's overall a really great series. At least in that series (unlike in InterWorld), the characters develop and grow over time.

I loved "Atlas Shrugged," and I'm not an Objectivist, or even really a Libertarian.

What's more, my favorite part was the monologues and the parables (like where Francisco D'Anconia tells about the factory that experimented with socialism).

I had a book of Shakespeare plays which had different gimmicks for telling the stories. One of them was Hamlet retold as a police report, which was interesting.

Back in the day, I wanted to write up Hamlet as a series of blog posts. Ophelia and Hamlet would be on LiveJournal; she'd be emo and weepy, he'd be bragging about getting into the U. Polonius would have an AOL page full of dad jokes. Laertes was a Twitter guy before Twitter was a thing, and he'd post basic dumb jock shit.

I don't know how I'd change it now.

Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol is better because he burned the second part. How better to show how fucked the Russian mindset is than burning your masterpiece? And it gives it a flair of mystery of course.

I don't know, I've just heard a lot of people call it a tragedy and whatnot.
