Unpopular opinions about books -

I almost forgot that similar issue. Re-releasing old books isn't bad at all. But when you change the cover and make it more simplistic and boring? That's not it, man. Also, I find it silly when books get a movie adaptation, and then get re-released with covers depicting the movie actors.

I haven't read all these, but these are all interesting. You get an idea of the characters, or the setting of the book. They make you want to know what's going on or where they are.

These feel more boring and aside from giving you an idea of the main character, don't give you any idea of the actual story. I will say, though, from a cursory glance these are actually in the minority. Most recent fantasy releases had artwork on the covers (of varying detail). Maybe the trend is going down, or maybe I overestimated how many covers were like this. It does make me hopeful.
"Girl with curled hair in a modern fancy dress" tells me literally nothing about the book, other than it being shit for teenage girls about hunky hot guys with paaaaain wanting to fuck some plain chick, who makes them wait, because she ain't no slut like that.

Kind of the same as the books with the "headless muscled male torso " ones, but there she is that kind of a slut.

Heinlein's early stuff was written for a younger audience, and it has that kind of pedagogic quality to it. Imparting his wisdom to the leaders of tomorrow. "Have Space Suit, Will Travel" is like 70 years old now but you could easily update it into a modern tract promoting STEM education.

See? I write a post about Clarke, and the only response I get is to the off-hand comment about Heinlein. Nobody wants to talk about Clarke any more.

So pretty based is what you're saying. We'd have been better off if that kind of thinking had taken off instead of "if you're a boy you should chop your cock off or even better just kill yourself" shit that did.

Rendezvous with Rama is one of the two books that are the reason I want to be an author, and it's one of the best science fiction books IMO. The sequels are good, but not as inspiring to me. I've never read much else of Clarke because my local bookstore never had any of his books - I only just recently bought a second Clarke book, Imperial Earth, which I intend to read soon.

As for my unpopular opinion: I hate The Road by Cormac McCarthy and think it is genuinely poorly written, only being published because McCarthy is famous.

I mean, I can't front on it. "Work hard, study engineering, and learn how to cheat on your taxes" is pretty good advice in any era.

Forgive me, I loved Rendezvous with Rama, but I read it so long ago I don't remember enough detail to say more than "man that was a good book."

Audiobooks are good for passing time but terrible for actually enjoying a book properly since you forget most of what you hear. You forget most of what you read too but it’s much worse for audiobooks.
Thats interesting. I've never had this problem.

I've never had anybody evangelize to me about Clarke. Conservatives/Libertarians and even a few communists have said "you must read Heinlein" and I see alot of elitist liberal types saying Asimov is the greatest. Not much about Clarke.

It’s scientifically proven to be the case. The brain seemingly cannot process it the same way. Same things happens on websites that include anything other than completely plain text - hyperlinks, ads, search bar, links to other articles etc all impede the ability to absorb information. There’s a book about it, can’t remember the name, but it made a lot of sense when I read it. Just food for thought, not saying you’re lying or something lmao

So, you read a book saying that audiobooks can’t be remembered but you can’t remember the book you read about, shit, now I can’t remember the point I was going to make.

I had issues with getting characters in Mistborn mixed up.

IMO, Sanderson's forte is writing battles and action sequences. The ending of The Well of Ascension absolutely knocked me on my ass.

His contribution to the Wheel of Time is apparently amazing. Granted, he's working with Robert Jordan's story, but I've heard he makes it go balls-to-the-wall in the last few books.

You’ve heard correctly for wheel of time. It dragged (and badly) for a while but he resurrected it. Mistborn, yeah, it got a bit formulaic, or maybe that’s not the right word since he threw in some good twists. Either way, yes, it had some issues. He’s killing it with the Stormlight Archives though!

All fiction books written in the first person are automatically garbage.
The only exception are the Flashman Papers by George MacDonald Fraser.

Alt-history is low-effort garbage written for drooling retards.

The Fantasy genre is a moribund mess and hasn’t been inventive or interesting since Jack Vance.

Science Fiction has been gutted of vision and imagination, and now it’s carcass is being worn by the worst kind of SocJus progressives.
Goodreads and amazon (same company now) only give me recommendations for female authors. It's insane, I don't mind women authors but the vast majority of books I read are from male authors, especially in science fiction and fantasy genres. Was I supposed to just not notice that all of a sudden this year my recommendations just happen to always be woke bitches that can't write? fuck off with that shit.

It's interesting and mildly depressing how Heinlein has fallen out of fashion. I remember in '80s and '90s Usenet you could start a giant flamewar by just mentioning him and saying anything even remotely positive or negative about him, like calling him a Nazi or claiming he was the most enlightened thinker of all time, then crossposting it to like 20 or so different newsgroups.

If we stopped reading science fiction authors because of their perverse sexual habits and misdeeds, there wouldn't be too many left, I'm afraid.
Being an active paedophile isn’t a ‘perverse sexual habit’, it’s a crime against humanity. And the SJW-ification of sci-fi is why so many of them are now troons, furries, commie gender trenders and other manifestations of the rainbow of faggotry. Hence the Vox Day/Puppies shitstorm.

Lol, wut you expect? Amazon isn't a proper publisher. They have the book section solely to dominate more of the retail market. Them allowing anyone to get published there is meant to offer a girth of content. Not quality content. "See how many books we have! And while your here you can get your other crap as well with next day delivery!".

Amazon is a place to buy books. Not really a place to find them. I'd sooner take people's opinions on a book from this site then from a book description or review on amazon.

The Goodreads articles are always exclusively either gay shit, feminist shit or racial fetishism shit. It's so damn bad.

I know he's been brought up, but I enjoy Brandon Sanderson's books. But they all feel the same; his Mistborn reads like his Warbreaker reads like the Recokners reads like his YA entries. Which, doesn't mean its necessarily bad for an author to produce a style, but it just really prevalent. Like the plots are different and the setting, but the narration feels all the same. I also kinda hate how interwoven all the elements are, I know how that's the point of the Cosmere, but it feels to bloated in other books' elements at the time.

With all of the dribble that comes from goodreads or most/all book review sites there should be a drinking game based on it. where while you scroll through good reads and read the descriptions, take a shot if it's any of those woke points, down the whole bottle if its all three into one unholy abomination.
