Phil Collins is a criminally underrated drummer (check out his work with Genesis - especially pre-1985, Peter Gabriel’s solo albums and Brand X) and songwriter. Never really understood why there was such a hatedom for his work, though that seems to be mostly a British thing. His reputation appears to be much better in the U.S. though.
It's because of overexposure during his commercial peak. His and Genesis' hits were pretty simple and catchy synthpop/AOR tracks and having a seemingly endless stream of them being played over and over for years would have quickly turned a lot of people off of him. I'm not a pom (thank God) but I'd imagine it'd be even worse in his homeland.

People bitch about him if all they've heard are his radio-friendly tracks in their dentists' waiting rooms. Deeper cuts like "Mama" and "In The Air Tonight" are unheard-of by the kind of people who mindlessly slam him.

I think a sizeable portion of the world has heard "In The Air Tonight", in fairness. He's an excellent drummer, but the majority of his solo material is pretty beige-rock.

In The Air Tonight is one of his biggest songs. It's not a deep cut by any measure. But yea, Phil's best pop stuff was with Genesis, and a lot of the shit pre Invisible Touch is "obscure" relative to the big hits on that album and the hits Phil churned out on No Jacket Required. Over the past year or two, I've noticed That's All getting played a lot in stores and on the radio, though.

Not sure if this is unpopular or "who cares" territory:

"Send in the Clowns" should not have become Stephen Sondheim's One Pop Standard. I'd've preferred "Not a Day Goes By."

Prince is that artists you hear praised as being an incredible talent. One of the bests who's live shows are matched by none. Yet, whenever I see him I think of light-skinned black guy who's androgynous and had some okay pop songs. Michael Jackson will always be better.
both are overrated... Falco is the king of the 80s.

I thought as much myself, but by all accounts the guy was one hell of a worker and could shred. Don’t care for his stuff, but whenever he does a cover it’s good shit. I don’t think they’re comparable, totally different.

John Frusciante's solo output is much better than RHCP. And I say this as a huge Peppers fan.

It helps he records the way he wants and for the love of his craft, without attachments to record companies (at least that I know of), which can't be said of his on-and-off band.

Here in Bongland his solo work and stuff in Genesis gets hated in equally.

I don't give a fuck. I had Invisible Touch on CD in my car for like 2 years, played that fucker constantly. Especially if I had a friend along who hated Collins.

The definition of “concept albums” has become too broad, and many supposed greats of the convention aren’t actually concept albums. Part of the confusion stems from people conflating concepts albums with any album intended to be listened to in their entirety, rather than just being a collection of songs. If you cannot describe specific themes of an album in a single comprehensive sentence (i.e. a “high concept”), then it is probably not a concept album.
For example: Dark Side of the Moon is not a concept album. It is definitely intended to be listened through in a single sitting, but the best through-line of the album is a disillusionment of British culture; an idea that isn’t even present in half the songs. Each track has its own themes to explore, but each track stands just as well alone (outside of the natural benefit of their place in the buildup of an album on whole).
Eldorado by Electric Light Orchestra is definitely a concept album: it is the fantasies of a man attempted to supplant his dull reality with exciting dreams. Every track lends itself to that idea (as an aside, more rock albums would be serviced with an overture).
Concept albums don’t necessarily need to tell a story, like Tommy or The Wall do. Some, like the Tales of Mystery and Imagination or I Robot, both by The Alan Parsons Project, aim to adapt the various writings of a specific author. Every album by The Caretaker is a concept album, each aiming to emulate the effects of mental disorders through the lens of the end of the movie adaptation of The Shinning. Paradise Theater by Styx, inspired by the titular theater in Chicago, is a concept album; but it’s Styx’s only concept album.
Another misconception is that concept albums are automatically quality albums. Trapped in the Closet by R. Kelly is a concept album, but even hip hop fans would question it being good. Imaginos by Blue Oyster Cult is a concept album, and it’s not just a garbage album, but it has the worse version of a song they recorded after they failed to get Imaginos off then ground the first time, 15 years prior.
Ultimately, does any part of this mean anything? No. Whether or not an album is a concept album is the least significant argument one could make about music, one that only appeals to elitist speeds like myself.
In conclusion: I hope you enjoyed reading my TEDx talk as much as I did writing it. I will take my puzzle pieces now.

Remembered seeing someone posting that Tyler, The Creator’s “IGOR” was the most overrated album they ever heard.

Well, he recently released CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, and I predict in the future that if the song “EARFQUAKE” was annoying to you, then guess what:

This is now EARFQUAKE 2.0, but with NBA Youngboy.
