Unschooling - We don't need no education.

  • We're mostly back to 100%. Expect more disruptions that will cause sister service outages for the forseeable future.

That's exactly what's happening, although not with polio (in the US, yet). There's been outbreaks of measles and whooping cough centered in communities where, surprise surprise, there's low rates of vaccination.

There's news out there that the Americas have eliminated measles, but that's not entirely true. People traveling can still bring it in the country and spread it among communities with low vaccination rates. IIRC, the most recent outbreak was spread by an unvaccinated child who contracted measles at Disneyworld in CA. That shitty Kate lady is actively participating in bringing back previously eradicated illnesses to the US.

Extremely sad, and we were just getting rid of chicken pox as well, nobody should have to go through what I had to when I was 6 or 7.

There's a reason people used to have like 15 kids, it's because most of them died without modern medicine such as vaccines
People need to learn from history.

chicken pox means you get shingles. I'm so terrified of shingles. I wish they'd had the vaccine when I was a kid.
I feel your pain, it's one of those things that'll always be in the back of your mine, especially since drug stores never stop bringing it up right at the door.

how long do you think it'll be before polio reappears?
Who knows. It could come without incident as far as I'm concerned.

I've mentioned before that my grandmother lost two brothers when they were still children -- one died of whooping cough when he was three, the other of tetanus at seven, after stepping on a rusty nail. Both are extremely painful ways to die. Back then there was no way to prevent this -- how can anyone honestly want to expose their children to such things? It's child abuse if you ask me. (Parents who refuse their children other types of life saving medicine have been prosecuted -- I don't see this as any different.)

really? don't you have to be like seventy to get it though?
I believe 60 and over is when you're supposed to.

I brought this up elsewhere, but I remind myself of a cute animated short I saw years back, based on a kids book, that told of how important being immunized is, I still see it being pretty relevant, even if these unschoolers never see it.

They sorta used to do this when I was a kid -- back before the vaccine was widely available. (I didn't actually attend one, but it wasn't uncommon for someone to send their kid over to play with someone if they knew they had chicken pox. The reason being that if you got it when you were younger, you were better off. The older you are when you get it, the worse it is.)

I think for me, it was because one of my sibs already had it so I ended up with it anyway.

There was an episode of the Simpsons where the family had one when I was younger (2003~2005?), but the vaccine had been out for years at that point (1995, I believe) so I had no clue what was going on.
There was an episode where Lisa got the mumps that came out in the 90's even though I'm pretty sure the MMR vaccine had been out for a while at that point.

Keep in mind the shows were written by a older generation during those times, and perhaps they didn't know of these at all when they decided to write about someone getting the mumps or a chicken pox party at play. They wrote what they knew.
