Untitled Hideous Kojimbo project in development - Death Stranding 2?

Death Stranding developer Kojima Productions have announced they are hiring staff for their new project.

The studio’s website is currently down at this time of writing, though Video Games Chronicle reports over 25 roles are listed on the website; including programmers, artists, writers (reportedly with experience in writing manga or novels), and designers. Unsurprisingly, the Tokyo-based studio states “business-level Japanese speaking and writing is required for all applicants.”

The LinkedIn profile for the company lists 25 jobs, all added 5 days prior. These include Sound Designer, Game Designer, Game Programmer, Cinematic Artist, Lighting Artist, UI-2D Artist, Character Artist, Animator, Sound Programmer, Animation Programmer, Physics Programmer, Tools Programmer, Technical Artist, System Programmer, Weapons-Mechanical Artist, AI Programmer, Project Manager, Environment Artist, Writer, 3D Rendering and Effects Programmer, Network Programmer, VFX Artist, Localizer (listed as “Localize”), and Producer-Assistant Producer.

The writer role (Translation: Deepl) asks for “Experience in scenario production for games and video works, writing original manga or novels, etc. (regardless of professional or amateur status);” preferably with “Experience in writing scenarios and other non-Japanese language material.”

The nature of this next project is not yet know, but news over the prior year indicates it could be related to Death Stranding, or a horror game. While founder and director Hideo Kojima stated the studio would make movies in the future, a programmer would suggest a video game.

While teasers of Kojima’s desk revealed very little, concept art showed what appeared to be some kind of sci-fi ship with “BRIDGES” emblazoned on the side. In the Death Stranding universe, Bridges was the company set up to help re-connect society across the US after a voidout explosion and the death of the US President.

Kojima had also expressed an interest in making a horror game, no doubt fueled by the ill-fated Silent Hills and P.T. (Playable Teaser) demo. However, the game was cancelled in 2015 by Konami. Soon after the situation rapidly deteriorated [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] ultimately leading to Kojima leaving Konami, and forming Kojima Productions.

Kojima had expressed this interest to Uzumaki author Junji Ito. While this offer was made casually, the language barrier made many believe it was a serious offer. Ito later apologized for getting people’s hopes up.

Based on the Weapons-Mechanical Artist role, it seems that if this project was a horror game, it may be more sci-fi based. Players could therefore fight back in a more meaningful manner, meaning a Silent Hill style horror game is unlikely.

Kojima is a fucking hack.

MGSV was an overblown mess that he spent way too much money on doing superfluous bullshit. "I WANT A NEW ENGINERU." That put him a few million in the hole. "I WANT KIEFRU SUTHERLAND-CHAN." Another couple million that had a very small return. And the plot was a fucking disaster. Remember that during this debacle he was Konami VP and nearly drove them in a hole. Every release that wasn't Ground Zeroes or Phantom Pain sold like shit, and they went to pachinkos because it actually made money after canning him.

He's overrated and he can't last five minutes in an actual writers room. Oh, he can do all kinds of cool gameplay stuff, and I do love MGS, but my god the man is somewhere near his molars with how far he is up his own ass. He's a bargain bin Tom Clancy. Actually worse than that, he's a bargain version of the authors that publish their own shit under the Tom Clancy name. It'll probably be as nonsensical and boring as Death Stranding, so good on you Koji for continuing to take retards money from them.

I hope it's not a sequel to Death Stranding, Death Stranding was an interesting and worthy enough experiment, but I have no desire to see more, I want something new and better.

I feel like Death Stranding delivered in the story department, but the gameplay was just kind of bad, maybe a sequel could work if it was entirely different gameplay (which a spaceship does seem to imply it would be something pretty different) but I 100% do not want more of the boring "delivery man" gameplay.

I hope it is either a spiritual successor to Silent Hills or a more straightforward science fiction game ala Snatcher and Policenauts.

Lots of small brains in this thread. Lmao.

Death Stranding was comfy and fun.

I see what it was going for, but it just didn't pull it off.

The battlefields were the game in a nutshell, very cool conceptually but they boiled down to the most basic shooting imaginable, this is from the guy that used to give us the rock solid gameplay of Metal Gear Solid?

Maybe It'll be something even more innovative and zany, such as you playing as Hideo Kojima playing Death Stranding. DSII

Death Stranding is just a ridiculous game. It's fascinating in the sense that you'd normally never see a AAA game go that far out of the way to be indecipherable and weird, but nobody was stopping him. Before its release he was hyping up the fact that it was the "first 'strand' game" and I still don't think we know WTF a "strand game" is. Kojima truly has no filter.

Ultimately he needs constraints. Someone needs to just stand next to him when he's thinking up all this bullshit and go "Okay, you've got 1 good idea here. Let's take that and expand on it." I think he finally got to that point with MGSV and GROUND ZEROES, as IMO they were the first MGS games that could get by on gameplay alone. He needs that this time around - I don't think people are going to be interested in another vague romp through the post-apocalypse.

You can do extremely weird while still being fun. Drakengard and Nier are examples of this. The difference is Taro is competent and Kojima isn't.

Death Stranding should have been Metal Gear Solid with a greater emphasis on the paranormal, all the elements were there with Higgs and the Demens but instead the focus was on being a boring deliveryman and having to be non-lethal with everything.

I get why Kojima would want to get artsy and try to make a game that isn't centered around killing people for a change, but it simply isn't as fun or engaging that way, that's all there is to it, it dampens the drama too much.

I do think the story had its moments though, the whole finale was very affecting and there was all sorts of fascinating bits of lore and mind bending concepts, like I said all the elements were there for something great, but Kojima wasn't able to come up with a good enough core element to have everything revolve around the way as weird as Metal Gear gets it's still centered around the core of military action, which is the perfect jumping off point for the Kojima strangeness we all know and love.

I think Kojima has still got it, there's enough creativity and interesting things in Death Stranding to prove that, maybe the transition to a new company after so many years made things awkward and unwieldy at the start which is why the gameplay didn't quite gel the way it should have, but maybe next time things will strike a better balance, we can only hope.
