Urban legends, everyone has had at least one when they were little.
I have had a great fascination with them ever since I got into the horror genre when I was in middle school of media since they were very close to reality.
Back when I lived in Friesland in the Netherlands, we had this urban legend about "The white wrenches" (Or De Witte wieven in Frisian)
Many variations of the urban legend exist, but the one I grew up with was this.

Since there are many biking roads in Friesland adjacent to farmland and youngsters would bike always on them to the way to their school, some even would even go over the fence and go on the farmland to fuck around.
That's when the farmers thought, maybe we could do something to make them fuck off.
Then they came up with the White Wrenches, Witches who are dressed in all white which would punish kids who come on farmland unannounced by making them disappear and do who knows what to you.
Supposedly you could only see them dancing around the farmland on misty days, however, some say they would manifest only on misty days and find the ones who came on the land when they weren't there.

What are some urban legends you grew up with?

Only one I can remember right now is "la santa compaña", a procession of souls that are in pain walking through small paths and villages that could only be seen at midnight. They wore garbs like the attendees in easter processions (white with hoods on, think KKK style) and usually one person was seen at the front carrying a cross. There was also "el sacamantecas" but that dude really existed, is some scary boogeyman that kidnaps kids and kills em to steal their blood but it is based on an actual criminal that did that.

Skunk apes

Florida had a bunch of urban legends about them, until it turned out they weren't apes but 3-4 different kids of invasive monkeys that have now taken over parts of the state.

Some species were research animals, some were brought in from zoos, some were kept as pets.

I never grew up with any except that there was pedophiles everywhere in the bumfuck town I lived in. I'm shocked I didn't leave that town with a criminal record.

There are a lot of hilarious urban legends around drugs. Anyone who grew up and sowed their wild outs in the years before people would just check shit out on Erowid or whatever knows a dozen probably. Some of the best have to do with LSD. That it is bound to the paper with strychnine; that it stays in your spine forever and when you crack your back you get flashbacks; the story of the guy who thought he was an orange who was afraid to get peeled; that it can be made from Foster's beer; that it is given to children in the form of a "Blue Star" temporary tattoo; that distribution is charged as intent to overthrow the government or that taking it more than seven times means you're legally considered insane; and dozens of others. Then you have stuff like smoking banana peels to get high, stuff like that.

Where I grew up the men in white hoods gathered around a burning cross and it was a little more than just "KKK style."

Because you are a pedophile?

The largest city near me has an interesting history in many ways, but apparently many of the formative members of the community were involved with Freemasonry. A lot of Masonic symbols can be found in interesting places around the city, particularly one cemetery. It's known for a small pyramid containing the remains of one particular family and for a long time, the pyramid wasn't actually finished. The door of the pyramid was supposed to be blocked with one final stone once the last member of the family died and was interred in the pyramid, but they just never got around to dying I guess. A popular local legend says that if you go there at midnight and knock 12 times on the door, a 13th knock sounds from inside the pyramid. They finally placed the last block a few years ago and sealed the pyramid, probably because the groundskeepers got sick of yelling at drunk college students knocking on the pyramid door.

Another famous urban legend relates to a building that has in it's 100+ year history been several restaurants, a ranch house, and a brothel. They say that at one point of it's history a fire broke out on the second floor and the resident living there burned to death, which has caused a long history of paranormal activity that centers on the second floor. From the 50's to late 90's it was a bomb-ass restaurant the ghost apparently really liked, because after it closed and another place went in, nothing has lasted longer than a year or so. It's been divided into a few residences and rented out now.

Some people I know have also claimed to see a lot of "orbs" in photos around the waterfront in proximity to our monument to fishermen lost at sea. but I've not heard any more documented evidence of that.

The iconography probably comes from what I'm talking about, it's a christian garb used in processions for easter that the ones that carry the figures of christ on the street wear. They're called "nazarenos".

I don't know if this counts, but when I was kid I heard this rumor that a stoned hippy played Barney.
