I'm here to post updates about this hunk'a shit.
The new artist is honestly doing a pretty great job. The art's not perfect, but for a game like this, it's remarkable. They were given a dumpster and managed to polish it up pretty damn well. Whoever the artist is (I can't honestly be assed to find their name right now), much kudos to you. I wonder what the original artists of the characters think now that their art has been pretty much tossed out the window.
Apparently, Emhari (the pre-transitioned "lesbian") wants to fuck Keaton's mom. What the fuck.
Last but not least: their website still gives you a certificate error whenever you try to enter it.

Kudos to the new artist, but the game is still going to inevitably suck ass.
IMO, Ashlie still has a man chest, and Inaya doesn't look any different because it's still the same artist that did her originally.
They at least look more cohesive and no one's drawn in any notably worse quality anymore- but I still think Malik's original style would've fit best with the aesthetic they're going for. Unless they've drastically changed their backgrounds and shit in the several months they took off work, of course.
At least Arihi us trying to pass now and doesn't look like an angry butch lesbian.

Honestly, I like the new artists style much better. They somehow managed to make Arihi look good and his was definitely one of the designs I hated the most, and the game definitely had a problem with consistency in art quality so I guess this "fixes" that, but this whole "one artist redrawing all the sprites" thing.... where do I even begin!
This game's already been in production for way too long for what it is, and having one artist redraw all the sprites while they already HAVE finished sprites is nothing but a huge timesink, that's at least three months of work if they're working full time, not to mention they have to pay said artist. The "multiple artists of different ethnicities" thing was one of the games main gimmicks so I don't understand this decision at all, even if the game will look better in the end for it. I HIGHLY doubt the artists all wholeheartedly agreed to this, I know I would feel very disrespected if the game I was working on for months suddenly decided to throw all my work out so a coworker could come in and redo it all, basically taking all the credit. I'm sure they would still get credited as character designers, but what good is that when your work doesn't end up in the final product?
I'm guessing there was either some drama between the artists that lead to some of them leaving or refusing to work further for such little pay (can't find their kickstarter budget breakdown now but they had the same percentage for art, music, code, and writing when theres WAAAY more artists working on the game than composers, coders, and writers; so that's very likely. Plus, remember those patreon updates from a while back where Dani said they had problems with contracts?), or Dani's gotten an ego boost from the attention and money she's getting and has deluded herself into thinking she's a professional game dev now and simply cannot settle for the shitty art of some of her friends. Seriously, no matter how dog shit their art is if you've already hired them and signed contracts have some respect for their labor and time.
Either way, I was always sure this whole game would blow up in their faces but now it seems even more likely; and sooner or later some artists will come out to talk about how horrible of an experience they had working with Dani. Why are they stepping down so all their work can be redrawn for no reason whem the game has clearly made no progress in terms of story, or the coding for the minigames? Why are they wasting so much time redesigning and redrawing so many assets that are already done when they should be finishing the damn game?
Having the game be less ugly may improve sales projections and make it look more professional. Well as pro as you can get for this type of pile.
I really wonder if the all over the place art was part of the problem with finding a publisher. It looked like random tumblr art fest #37852.
At least with a cohesive design you might get a few normies to buy it on a whim. With the old art it looked like a joke. Plus this artist can brag that she was brought in to save the game by redoing the art. Might look good for future jobs.
A very likely explanation. Someone or multiple someones was dragging their feet. Maybe they weren't getting fair pay or were told to work for free. It's Dani so I wouldn't be surprised. She seems more focused on buying furniture and stuff than paying people. Her huge ego will likely be her downfall.

I get the reason why Anoki was designed to not look like Pocahontas from Disney. But there was no reason to make the character that ugly. The reaction to Anoki was natural. That and the "fuck white people" thing.

When I read the letter at first I thought Keaton's mom was being scammed by a Nigerian Prince. But having it be Emhari might be worse. I guess this make's Mrs. Nervetti a lesbo, huh?
And of course the guy who is half Chinese is still blacker than Malik.

I guess that Ashley is the only relevant character. After all, she's the only one who can't date Malik, and she's the only one who has two routes.
I played it so you don't have to, of course! I'm not a monster. I'd never force you all to be subject to this monstrosity. Since Keaton wasn't available, I went with our boy Malik.
My criticisms for this game are as follows (mostly pertaining to Malik's route, as if I played another one, I'd get brain damage):
- Throughout this entire game, there was lag. I'm able to run Minecraft with shaders at 60 FPS. The lag is not from my computer.
- I can understand having the dialogue being informal, but why the narration? Instead of reading like a visual novel game, this reads like the fanfiction of an 11-year-old girl who refuses to get off TikTok. It doesn't have the excuse of being the character's inner thoughts either, as it refers to the player character as "you" several times instead of "me."
- "Don't assume muh gender reeee." Proceeds to assume Arihi's gender. (He referred to Arihi as a boy- whether that's the correct or incorrect assumption is up to you.)
- Arihi has an alternate set of clothes to go to Bopeye's. Malik works at Bopeyes, but does not have an alternate set of clothes for it (despite having the clothes in the ending card).
- My volume was at 60% and the music was still completely inaudible. I tried increasing it in my video editing program to max, but it was still quiet, so I left it alone for your suffering as well.
- I was reading fairly slowly and still had absolutely no idea what was going on.
- Arihi only knows Malik is a fuckboy rapper. He learned Malik's name, and then a minute later, allowed Malik's nasty germy hands to touch his chicken, despite having been shown to be a germaphobe one scene prior in the BVS. That's inconsistent and gross.
- Anoki kept being referenced. She's fat, ugly, and I would not have sex with her, so she gets a point taken off the overall score of this game. She also grooms Malik to make him question his gender and sexuality because she's fat, ugly, and no one wants to have sex with her. (Did you notice not even Ashley would fuck Anoki?)
- The game's layout is distracting. There's no change in text formatting, the text bubble, or the font color when there's narration, so it seems like characters are talking even when they're not. The only times quotation marks are used is when Malik has a flashback to Anoki.
There's too firm of a focus on being woke. It drives away much of your player base if your entire game is focused on gender, sexuality, and race. There are things you need to consider before you make a game: What type of game am I making? What type of person plays this type of game the most? With the story I have in mind, who will be the most drawn to this game? Is the game worth the amount of money I'm asking people for? It's clear the ValiDate devs are targeting an incredibly small portion of visual novel fans, and the fact that they don't realize how much larger of a fanbase they could get if they weren't so "politically correct" is disappointing.
This game is woke and liberal as shit but the characters don't wear masks in public buildings? What fresh hell is this!?
I don't think it's disappointing, more 'expected' and 'going to cause in-fighting'. The game is still shit, and was always going to be shit because they went into it not wanting to make a game, they wanted to make A Statement. Which is rare enough to make something worthwhile, but they also came in without the talent to do anything other than make 'Obnoxiously Woke: the VN'.
I've said earlier in the thread that Zoe Quinn's Chuck Tingle Kickstarter scam shows the upper bounds of a blatant pile of crap like this is around $80k, in this case maybe with a little boost due to how wokists are focussing so hard on race and gender as the true heads of the Oppressive Stack. I suspect some of the artists originally involved knew this was always going to be a tiny project, but once they started getting into the thousands they immediately got greedy and thought that their little political lecture masquerading as a game would make actual money for the people involved. Most of them have, or will, find out that they are going to get at best a pittance, because the ceiling for how much money their bullshit can generate is going to meet the reality of what happens when woke socialists come into money which only one of them controls.
They started with an unworkable concept of a bunch of woke self-inserts plus Malik, and later Keaton, to act as foils. They added an unworkable design where everyone can interact with everyone, but the characters don't have matching sexualities so the dating sim has a lot of non-dating in it. And they had an unworkable budget where everything was focussed on monetising memes and shit for the artists with the game itself being incredibly low priority, even though the main effort for it involved just a lot of writing due to RenPy.
So I call it being so shit in exactly the way we predicted it would be shit, and have been shown it was shit every step along the way, as amusing rather than disappointing. Fortunately for them, their ideological blinders can make it so that any failures are due to racism/homophobia/transphobia/alt-right GamerGate Nazi chuds, protecting their fragile egos from the fact that their limited talent and even more limited work ethic meant this was never going to appeal to anyone but people deep into their little cult of identity politics. That, plus there's going to be inevitable drama that gets leaked and/or done publicly on Twitter when someone starts to complain about how there's tens of thousands of dollars out there that they're not getting enough, or any, of.
The best they could have hoped for was mediocrity, but no, it's actively bad. I'm betting that nearly none of them will ever realise why.
