A while back, I believe six years now (damn), a game called "Valkyria Chronicles" was released on the Playstation 3.

Since I'm kinda shit at explaining what exactly this game is, I'll just let this video show you what the gameplay is like:

It is a fantastic game in my opinion. Between the hybrid of turn based strategy and third person shooting action, the wonderful story with a fantastic cast, and the unique art style, this game was an underrated gem.

And almost literally ten minutes ago, I just found out a PC version was released on Steam:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/294860/

So, for those who missed out on the game the first time around and like to play on the PC, I recommend trying this game out.

I was gonna make this thread, lol.

I bought this game on PS3 when it released years ago and it's definitely one of the best games released last gen and stands alongside Xenoblade Chronicles as one of the highlights of a sadly diminished Japanese games industry.

Basically, it's a turn based strategy game where as opposed to using each character once, you are assigned a number of command points to use for your turn. You can spend these on using whatever character you want (the tank takes more points per use) and can use the same character as many times as you wish as long as you have points left to spend. However using the same character repeatedly gives diminishing returns due to there being a penalty to their movement bar for successive uses.
There are other systems in place such as needing to spend a turn reloading when a magazine's depleted and powerful weapons like sniper rifles having limited ammo to prevent you just using all your turns to spam powerful actions with a single character.

Choosing a character moves you into third person view where you then control them directly and can move them freely which causes their movement gauge to deplete. Once it's depleted, the character can't move any further unless you spend another action point to move them again which will result in their movement gauge will be smaller than if they were "fresh", and smaller still for a third successive selection.
To attack, just hold down the aim button where you'll then see the crosshair with a circle that shows where the volley of bullets fired will fall randomly within, thus accuracy is increased when you close distance and body shots are easier to pull off than the more damaging headshots (critical hits).

As you move around in real time, enemies within range will open fire on the character you are moving, although with decreased accuracy and damage, so it's advisable to get to where you want quickly (preferably behind cover too). The same is true for your characters, so positioning at the end of a turn is just as important as when you attacked because a well positioned squad will get a lot of kills when the enemy advances on your position during their phase. The overwatch command in the X-com, games is the best comparison to this feature.

There's tons more to talk about such as the gorgeous graphics that have a canvass effect similar to Okami, and the impressive soundtrack by Hitoshi Sakimoto ( Vagrant story, ff tactics games)

It's an absolute steal at $19.99/£14.99 and so far Sega are pleased with it's success on steam, so it may well result in them porting more of their console only stuff from last gen such as the similarly underrated Vanquish.

I still have this game on my shelf, love the hell out of it. Marina is one of my favorite characters in the game.

Another thing about the game, you're able to chose between a good selection of characters, each with their own unique look and personality, and if a character is shot down and you don't get to them in time, they die and stay dead.

I have it on PS3, not sure if I want to rebuy it again.

EDIT: Wow, 6 years already?

I say go for it, if you don't have the DLC and your PC is decent enough. It should run on just about any average computer nowadays.

Mine is Nancy. Oh, and Dallas.
I absolutely love this game. While some of the out-of-battle mechanics are a bit tedious, the story and characters more than make up for it. And now I can get hold of the DLC missions, I think I might get hold of it on Steam.

fair warning though (and i love this game so ) it's anime as fuck at first.

that might seem obvious just looking at it, but what i really mean is the story starts agonizingly bad in my opinion.

"the windmill is such a beautiful symbol of the town"
next scene
"oh no they're destroying the windmill!!!!"

not even mentioning the cute baby pig creature your heavily armed militia picks up. the most interesting characters aren't the main character or his waifu but the soldiers of squad 7.

It really wasn't. It had some interesting ideas gameplay wise, but story and character wise, I feel it kinda falls flat on it's face.

I already had the game plus the DLC. I would have bought it in a heartbeat if they had added any new content. Although VC on the go is also a tempting idea.

Just an update: started playing this game on the ps4. Stuck on one of the early missions, though... Pretty annoying difficulty spike.

lol what an old ass thread. i have played all the games in the series and i liked them except for two. that one can stay forgotten for all i care. i was rather surprised they decided to make a fourth game and i liked that it was just like one but a bit more. sadly, the game did not sell as much as sega had hopped and was put on ice yet again.

@Begemot abuse scouts and the tank smoke screen. those things break the game.

Abuse scouts in what way? I'm kind of stuck in one of the first missions where the enemy tank shows up.

i take it you on chapter 7? what i did at the start of the map, was put a sniper on top of the tank and kill the enemies near by (i think i spared one since i ran out of shoots and forced to climb down because your unit gets knocked down if the tank moves with them on it) scouts are perfect for this map since they can run long distance. if you know the tank route, place scouts on a safe distance and once the tanks generators open, rush over there and throw a grande inside. once they are destroyed, you can take your own tank and destroy it. it helps if you got the demolition order to speed up the damage. also, save up medals so you got more turns because you gonna need them.

Alicia is a tank. She has more health than any other scout and her abilities are broken. Use stacked orders on her and have her shoot the radiators on tanks, headshoot people, and rush the flag. This very simple strat breaks almost every level.

Finished Valk 4 not too long ago.
The gameplay was solid and the story surpassed my expectation which were rather low.
I enjoyed the rank system because it gave an incentive to play fast and effectively something most T-rpg have trouble with.
Even if there's some balances issues with classes and orders, the game was pretty balanced. Each character being linked to paralogues forced you to change your team quite a lot.

Might replay the game with a self impossed chalenge (Iron Man).

Yeah, that’s a problem I’ve had with the game for a long time. It just feels like Orders were slapped in without any consideration for balance, so on subsequent playthroughs I never used them. Along with going down the conventional weapon upgrade paths so Scouts weren’t the ones killing tanks.

I recall there being a mod for the PC version that balances out the game more, (as well as improving the general accuracy of early games lancers and snipers so they’re much more useful) but I haven’t played the game with it yet.

If I'd need to rank the games, it would be:
3>1>2>4>>>>>that god awful spinoff.
The first game had a great story and production values, and tackles race relations better than seemingly every western game that came a decade afterwards. The gameplay is pretty novel but broken pretty easily.
The second had an uninspired set up but I really liked the bite sized gameplay and it gave the player tank turrets who were hilariously broken (pretty much one shot everything and can snipe units from half the map).
The third is a combination of everything good from the previous two games, with even better cast and having a great villain.
The fourth just felt like a cash grab to use all the work the devs did in remaking the first game to the ps4. The advancements in the the previous two games are gone, and the devs just slapped in a new class to justify the full price tag.
The spin off was really fucking bad but at least playable. It has the promise of good story but it just never utilizes it, the gameplay is mindless and I'm pretty sure it's an abomination caused by the devs having no clue how to make the VC gameplay work in real time.
