Video game remakes and demakes - Remakes, demake shitmakes.

In recent years, remakes of games have become more populare than ever. We have seen remakes of classics such as Spyro, crash bandicatoo and more. This have sold very well.
We have also seen remakes that have not been made with love or have just been a cashgrab. Flashback a few years ago was one of them.
This year, there have come out two remakes of games that I am found of: Mafia and XIII. Both games came out in the early 00s, got solid reviews etc. Both of them had loyal cult following and there was a hype to see a remake of either of them.
However, here is where the simillarety stops.
Mafia remake while not a perfect remake, was made with care and love. Instead of doing a frame by frame remake, they expanded and put their own spin on it. Put into the money and time to re record the script with new voice actor (some that I like, some that I don't). They manged to keep some of the charm of the original game. Point is, it was not a shitjob they did.

XIII on the other hand, is a like the hinderburgen of gaming.
Released just a few days ago and already have an awful user score raiting on Steam user reviews.
XIII shit.PNG

"väldigt negativa" means highly negative.
Not only is the "remake" full of bugs, glithes and other game breaking stuff, it manged to lose all the charm of the orginal game. The uniqe look of the first game is gone and all the "improvmenet" have made the game worse in every way.
It is a game made with no love, no talent and no money. Even worse, it could make people avoide the orginal game.

So here is what we have. two remakes. One is pretty good and the other one is the worse thing since the Münch massarce.
Anyone have other examples to share?

I thought this thread would be about Demons Souls. PS5 version looks great but it's still an old fucking game that played perfectly well in its old form.

Mafia on the other hand really needed a new version. I have to check it out.

Mafia remake is a worthy remake in my eyes. Perfect? No. Lost some of the tone of the orginal? Yes, but it is still a good game.
edit. forgot to mention, that the og XIII is now on sale and cost less then 5 dollars. give it a try, but it you may have to fix with the config file and all that to get it to run.

I never liked remakes... or "reboots" or "remasters" "revisions" or anything else that takes a game, even one that was already good, and adds shit to it.

I'm a classic guy through and through. I thought the Spyro and Crash trilogy looked like shit compared to the original PS1 games. Unnecessary art direction, clutter, and fluff in all the levels. The Dragons from the first Spyro game already had a personality (minus the "THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME" ones, which were like half the fucking game), and the controls for the Crash trilogy are fucked up (you can't make certain jumps and landings like you could in the PS1 games since the hitbox for crash changed)

The latest one I hate is the Sam & Max one. I already gave my two cents about it and I still stand by my point.

Tbh didnt we get the doom reboot which is fantastic compared to what doom 4 was originally was going to be and also arent remakes good for games that have aged awfully

The SMT3 Nocturne remake looks fantastic graphically, although they ported the game to run in Unity for some odd reason, it has very noticeable performance issues, and it's 60$ in Japan because Atlus.
A shame they seemed to not put as much effort as they could have into it, since it's a fantastic game. I'm still excited to play the game again whenever a finished translation patch or the western release comes out, since it doesn't cost 60$ to download games on a hacked Switch.
Day 1 DLC for a rerelease of a 17 year old game is pretty disgusting though.

I see your point, but I disagree. Sometimes, games are so old that you can't run them properly on a modern system or the controls which was fair for its time, is shit now. Then it is time for a remake.

I can't comment on Doom. I never really was a FPS kind of guy, I had an ex that played it on the SNES and my eyes started to bleed because it looked like shit.

If we were talking about something like Sonic CD the 90's PC version that doesn't boot at all then fine I'll give you that (even THAT has a patch for it though) but we have things called DOSBOX, and other emulators and software that can run old PC games just fine. Nevermind the abundance of console emulators.

I usually shy away from remakes. II'm usually in the mood for something new than reliving my childhood.

REmake is better than the original. RE2make was pretty damn good. FFVIIR was a mixed bag but the combat was nice.
I think anything from the era when they were just figuring out console 3D gaming should be fair game for a remake now that we're working with much more powerful hardware and displays.

Demakes are pretty cool, I appreciate the attempt at trying to simplify something as complex as a modern game into something different even if they do end up playing mostly the same (for obvious reasons though ofc)
There's this cool Splatoon one for NES that's also open source for example:
There's a whole tag on itch.io too for them but some are pretty hit or miss since some people think demake just means "Make the sprites and walk around and that's it" for whatever autistic reason in their minds.

The problem is PS3 games can't really be brought forward due to how everything was a mess from a tech standpoint on that system.

And if things turn out the way they're assumed to be turned out Sony wants to capitalize on the Souls games because Bloodborne didn't get a boost from the PS5 and it's the only PS4 game to not have this happen, so it's expected that it's the next one to be remade as a complete edition with all the DLC tied with the base game. I don't even think sequels are out of the question at this point, the remake was made mostly by Japan studio itself.

All the souls games are still on paper considered 3rd person adventure games, so if this is what they want to have their japanese studio specialize in it's not a bad idea.

I would love a remake of No One Lives Forever, even though the original still plays great.

But we all know they would completely and thoroughly botch it.

Did not know they remade XIII. Wish I still didn't.

I find it rather funny how much time and effort goes into a lot of the remasters only to end up with an inferior product. Give us the exact 1:1 rendition of the game, just bump up the resolution and make it work on modern machines without having to download user made patches, edit .cfg files or use win98 compatibility mode and hope everything just works.

I'm still fucking salty over the Silent Hill HD collection

I'm going to be honest with you, as someone who loves the Souls trilogy, I fucking hated Demons Souls. It sucked so much ass in so many ways. Great atmosphere and ideas. Plus, it got the ball rolling on the series so there's that. But it's dog shit.

Come at me Souls Nerds. Write your 20K word essay why I'm wrong.

You do have a point but thing is if am correct isn't 6th generation of consoles emulation somewhat of a mixed bag the dreamcast and gamecube emulation runs like a charm whlie the ps2 and notoriously xbox are a living nightmare to emulate WITH certain games only also is it me or why has sony emulation has became awful ever since the ps2

The Silent Hill HD collection should be considered a demake.

Looking at the XIII remake I feel that the lighting is a big problem, they went all fancy with it in a "Nintendo, Hire This Guy!" way. It creates way more depth and nuance than what is suitable for celshading.

It clashes like orange juice and toothpaste.

One idea that I think is more suitable would be to selectively use something similar to harsh stencil shadows instead of soft ones. Think Doom 3 but with a more hand drawn and inked look.

How about Chrono Trigger for Android and iOS? Even with the 3DS edition of the game out they managed to fuck it up such that textures didn' line up and the software wouldn't load.

Meanwhile my cart which is larger than the phones people were playing it on still worked perfectly in my SNES.
