I'll start with this

I found a friend wishlist on gog and I'm thinking of buying them some of these during the current sale as a surprise, anything you'd recommend as being particularly good or you'd say should be avoided? As for tastes he is okay with trying anything not racing, sports or games with only romance

Pillars of Eternity 2 and the Avernum series are both good RPG's, though Avernum has a distinct old-school look and feel to it. But Spiderweb games has made their niche from that feel, so they still play really well.

Fire Emblem series.

Which games should one start with?

3 houses is fine, it doesn't take that much management though it is on the tedious side. The game is stupid easy though unless you play on the hardest difficulty, so you can probably skimp on management stuff if you just want to jump in. I personally found 3 houses to be really easy while playing autistically, so just play it on normal and let the game auto manage shit and you'll be fine probably.

The 3DS games are also generally good games (I think Awakening sucks, but I'm biased due to being an older fan. Fates Conquest is the best 3DS Fire Emblem IMO) and are much chapter then 3 houses, though don't expect all the mechanics to carry over to other games as these had some fairly experimental things in them. If you don't mind sprites "Fire Emblem" (NA version) for the GBA is good and very straight forward to play as it is very "baby's first Fire Emblem". I think emulating Fire Emblem for the GBA is a perfectly easy way to try out Fire Emblem with little investment and see how it feels, just give it a little time as the tutorial really holds your hand in places due to it being NA's first FE.

Canon wise for NA games only Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn share a universe, and Radiant Dawn works fine as a first one as it explains what you need to know from its predecessor Path of Radiance. Radiant Dawn is a very weird entry though, in a good way but it set ups unrealistically expectations for future games in some spots.

Pretty crap list. Tell him to add the following

Specific titles
1) Super Metroid (certainly should play 1 game from the franchise)
2) Resident Evil 1 Remake (certainly should play 1 game from the franchise)
3) Castlevania - Symphony of the Night (certainly should play 1 game from the franchise)
4) Chrono Trigger
5) Donkey Kong Country

Titles from general franchises
1) At least 1 3d platforming Mario game
2) At least 1 3d Zelda game (so for example Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, or Breath of the Wild)
3) At least 1 game from the Devil May Cry franchise (personally I'd go with DMC3, but 4 and 5 are fine)
4) At least 1 game from the Metal Gear franchise (personally I'd just go with the Metal Gear Solid)
5) At least 1 game from the Final Fantasy franchise (personally I'd go with either FF6, FF7, or FFT or each of these)
6) At least 1 game from the Grand Theft Auto Franchise

honorable mentions
1) Either Doom (2016) or Doom Eternal (can't personally vouch for the games, but I'd want to play one of them that's for sure)
2) Bloodborne (another game I'd like to eventually play)

Maybes
1) Kingdom Hearts 1 only if your friend really likes Disney characters.
2) Diablo 2 but only if you can play with other people.
3) Either Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2

He has (I've seen his games when I visited him last time) most of those games already though (No Breath of Fire, Doom Eternal, Diablo 2 or Red Death Redemption 2 but knowing him he's looking out to get them) since he has been building his collections for decades (A big part of it were gifts)

I was focusing on getting from this list because it is less expensive during GOG current sale (I'm not trying to be cheap, I just don't have that much money and lower prices mean I could get him more in one shot right now)

Oh and knowing him he doesn't necessarily want to get all these games, he put at least some of those there to remember what he saw that interested so he could look it up what the games are like later

Yeah...just to say, I definitely wouldn't recommend buying most games, not unless they're that good, you can play them with somebody else, they have a lot of replayability.

Smaug's Smokey Hole

Sweeney did nothing wrong.

Surprised Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete is not on the available list.

That and Master of Orion 2. Both are very simple to pick up, the klunkiness of the interface and controls is surprisingly low for such old games.

Another overlooked classic Capitalism Plus(that's the enhanced/expanded version), a really fun tycoon game that is very easy to get into. Capitalism 2 gets much more complex.
Aerobiz on the SNES is another great tycoon game about establishing and running airlines.

I'm going to comment about few games from that list.
Rebel Galaxy - rather simple and fun space flying/shooting game, it has good soundtrack.
Hard West - squad based tactics in Western setting with some occult themes thrown in, had some bugs when I played it years ago.
Eador Genesis is a good fantasy strategy game, but it's only worth buying if he doesn't have later games from same series. Sequels are pretty much the same game with added 3d graphics and bugs.
Interstate 76 is game about shooting things while driving a car. Dated classic, but it is practically unplayable on some modern computers.

Is there a starbound or terrarium equivalent set in middle ages like times? Just looking for a comfy chill and play at your own pace game with that setting. Just something you can get lost in?

Please don't make fun of my autism. :(
