As has been known for decades by now, movies based on video games are..... bad. Really bad. Really, really bad. So far there has been not a single video game movie which can be classified as an actually good movie. While this might change at some point in the future (for example the possibility that John Carpenter might return to do a Dead Space movie) it is clear that as it stands, the genre is beyond redemption or repair.

However, I ask that you who have seen a good variety of such films in your life, take a moment to list your top 3 vidya game movies along with a brief explaination for why you "liked" them so that together, we may collectively decide upon even a single video game movie that does not suck platypus afterbirth.

For now, here is my list

1) Street fighter: While a classic example of "so bad its good", this movie does one thing that thus far no other video game movie has done for me so far. Entertained me. This film is actually enjoyable to watch... even if 99% of that is due to the eternally awesome Raul Julia. Just goes to show how hilarious some video game movies might have been if they did not take themselves so seriously.

2) Silent hill: If you mentally replace all the dialogue with lines that actually make sense, have depth, or at the very least are not so fucking stupid or pretentious, you have a half decent flick when combined with the ok effects

3) Resident Evil 1: *stress sigh if given a different title and with all hackneyed and forced attempts to reference the game cut out, would be a mildly ok zombie flick, since many of the most idiotic moments in the film are attempts to shoehorn game references in where they have no real need to.

1.) Dead or Alive. Really, really bad movie. But I liked it because it was so stupid.

2.) Silent Hill. Actually had decent effects and monster design.

3.) . . . there is no 3.

But the worst!

1.) Postal. Stupid, grotesque, and unfunny.
2.) The BloodRayne trilogy.
3.) Super Mario Bros. Setting the standard for shitty video game movies for the last twenty years.
4.) Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Got nothing right.

I love Mortal Kombat. Even though the CGI is godawful, it still felt like Mortal Kombat and the movie was quite enjoyable.

I really wish I can say Silent Hill but what they did to the original story was seriously stupid and I hated how Alessa was 'ze devil' since in the original game, she was the exact opposite! Plus, the movie basically influenced the later Silent Hill games (especially Homecoming) and made them shit. Also, the director seems to think that it's girly for a man to care about his daughter hence the gender switch of the protagonist.

I also enjoyed the first Resident Evil movie but the direction the series took was disappointing (understatement). I really wanted to see the classic mansion from the first game being implemented in a sequel.

As an avid video game player, I can honestly say that I haven't seen many video game movies. The only two I can think of off the top of my head are DOOM and Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li. Unless you count the Pokemon movies.
I think I'm gonna watch Postal one day, just for the hell of it. I really want to see just how much Uwe Boll messed up the Postal mythos. Plus, I've never seen an Uwe Boll movie, and I want to truly know why he sucks.

I liked Super Mario Bros, though I wish they had been more faithful to the games. Street Fighter was a decent film and I liked Raul Julia as M. Bison.

On the flipside, the Chun Li movie was dreck, and I only saw the first Bloodrayne movie, and holy mother of fucking god that was awful.

Actually thought that the first movie (not the rest, oh god not the rest, Alice has become a mary sue par excellence She was solely included in the movies because Mila Jovovich, the actress who plays her, wound up marrying the director, Paul Anderson, who has done nothing but turn his wife's character (with her encouragement) into the equivalent of a horrifically-bad fanfiction) is very good IMO even if there is barely any of the source material in their.

Ok back to topic. I thought the animated Dead Space movies were pretty good. I saw a little bit of that space marine movie (need to finish to decide if good). I saw one the FF movies once it was pretty good IMO.

Well thats all i can think of for now...

I get what you are saying but it is the occasional attempts to tie into the source material of the first movie that were some of the most irritating things in the movie alongside the teleporting zombies. Had the movie been stripped of these aspects I think it would have been a lot less grating on me

Ok, Aftermath is now in the number 2 spot for me.

I can recall liking The Wizard when I was a little kid. I suppose it was more ABOUT videogames than an adaptation or pastiche of a particular videogame, though.
I can recall watching a video of a longplay of Portal 2 a full year before I bought the game. Games are becoming increasingly "cinematic" already.

I try to keep myself limited from most game movies as I've only seen about 10 VG based movies.

The Great: Super Mario Bros. I didn't care if It didn't follow the source material. It's humorous, dirty and full of fun. Dennis Hopper stole the show.

The Good: Doom. Sure it didn't have demons or hell but it was a fun little Alien Clone. Plus any movie with Karl Urban and the Rock are good IMO.

The Bad: Hitman. It's just not good. It completely missed what Hitman is about. It's what happens when you forgo stealth in favor of shoot-em up with an M60.

The Ugly: The Resident Evil film series. (Excluding Apocalypse because it's the only good one.) How is this shit still going on? Christ 5 movies going on 6! who's funding Paul WS Anderson!?!
