You're sadly out of luck since visual novels are targeted at japanese teenagers & adults, meaning that there won't be kana above/next to the kanji unless for double-meaning undertones or truly unusual kanjis. VNs are more meant to be the end goal to check how proficient in moonrunes you are (N2 level minimum), they're absolutely not beginner-friendly.
I could still recommend Memories Off (PSP versions can be largely be emulated) or Amagami if they are the kind of setting you're looking for.

Aside from what Bananasplit mentioned, you may be better off grabbing a slice of life VN for the PC and using Textractor.

So I finished yesterday World End Syndrome, since some guy online said it's pretty good and it was on sale. Sadly, it's pretty bad.
The game takes place on a small town where there's a legend of zombies reviving and killing people once every 100 years. The protagonist enters the town and we need to help him survive, in a weird implied timeloop that is never really explained.
The game has five heroines, each with her own route, but only the last two are really interesting, with everyone else having very little plot and not a lot of developement, ending with a shitty ending of "you die now, try again in a new route" that makes you feel like wasting your time. The final route also ends with a "to be continued" after not really achieving much of anything and still having a lot of questions unanswered.
The "gameplay" itself is terrible. You have a map of the town and can visit different places where some characters might be present. The problem is that the game doesn't tell you where characters are present, the flags flags can be annoying for some characters and finally none of the events feel like they are having weight. You just have idle chat with the girl, get a few affection points, that I still don't know what they do and continue without change.
It looks nice with a lot of effort on the models of the heroines, but the art style looks off and, besides one, no one has a charm or is memorable in her design.
tl;dr: avoid.

Im gonna be a VA for an upcoming indie Visual novel! It isn't gonna pay much, and they need to work on the story, but I might help out on the story & writing

Reading Umineko right now but my first VN wsa Katawa Shoujo which I loved. Kara no Shoujo has to be my favourite VN I have read so far though.

I finally set aside the time to read 9-nines episodes 4 in one sitting and I'm glad I did. I'll spare you my rambling and just say it's very good. Being the grand conclusion to the story, it's obviously the best one in term of writing. However, I've seen some opinions going around that you don't need to play the previous three episodes since they're their own separate routes and have little to do with the grand plot. I strongly disagree with this opinion as not only the first three provided the required context, and having knowledge of them made the payoff immensely more satisfying. The art and the voice acting were lovely, albeit the volume was a little quiet in some scene. The BGM were the weakest part, most were pretty unremarkable. The only exception was the insert song during the climax. And most importantly, I like all of the heroines. I have played a lot of visual novel more often than not I find myself invested in some routes more than the other, this one somehow managed to makes me care about them all equally.
Due to the episodic nature of the game, I was a little worried that they would have the last heroine, Noa do all the heavy lifting in resolving the entire plot. And it was true to an extend as she played a very central role until the "false" ending. The twist was obvious, but the timing of it still caught me by surprise. I really like how they incorporated the chart into story telling. The catharsis I felt when reading the climax scene was off the chart, and while the villain's reveals weren't as shocking as other works that attempted the same before, it was woven seamlessly into the narrative with ample foreshadowing as part of the story instead of purely shock factor. The ending, as good as it was however, left me with mixed feelings.
Now, I said above that I like all of the heroines, but if I had to choose my favorite, it would be Miyako. However due to the narrative structure of the series, the first heroine got the shortest end of the stick . With the way it works and her route being the first, you don't really understood anything and resolved nothing, as it was mostly used to served as a foundation for later episodes. I also understand that this is Noa's episode and they can't have other heroines taking over her spotlight in the ending, but I wish I could have seen something since it was the grand ending and all, especially when instead of just being other characters in Noa's route, the heroines came from their own route to lend the main character their strength during the final battle. Imagine my excitement when the game itself acknowledged this problem in the after credit scene and have you approached Miyako from behind. Then... title screen. Then I see they have an epilogue fandisk and it all make sense. Palette has definitely put themselves on my radar because of their works on this series. And whether or not they gives Miyako her well deserved ending in this fandisk will impact my goodwill towards their future titles going forward.

I forgot to comment it last time I've seen it. but it's not a good list. Hoshizora has an underage cast and incest with sex scenes, Saya no Uta is... you know, Yume Miru Kusuri I've heard it has some more mature material. I'd recommend G-string and Ever17 for people new for the genre (before they go to work on the 50+ hour games by Key, 07th Expansion and Type-Moon).

Ir's been about 15 years since I played it, but it's the type of games that just works really well character and plot wise. I still remember some of the events in it and the ending is absolutely amazing (though it's the kind of ending that's been done to death by games that came out afterwards).

I finished Root Double, which is available on Steam and is pretty fucking massive size for a VN (and not a particularly long one, around 25 hours).
Overall I'd recommend it. The plot starts similarly to 999 but has a lot of consistent internal terminology and foreshadowing that really clicks together by the end, which is a great case of smart writing that rewards people who pay attention. However parts of the game, especially the second route are a chore to read, and take a long time to get gud, and the game will sometimes flashback scenes from a different character's viewpoint that just feel like padding. Some parts could have definitely been trimmed down. A very good thing about the game is that the soundtrack is fantastic.
However the game's art style is bland as hell. And it uses the most overly complicated branching system I've seen in a VN. Basically, you have to adjust how you "percieve" each character in specific moments and that can change the main character's actions. If it sounds vague as fuck that's because it is vague and unintuitive (especially as the number of characters is rather big). You'd think it would make you want to tightrope how you interact with characters, but this never comes out (ironically everyone acts pretty common headed rather than the usual VN fare) and you can go by 95% of the game just putting all the values on max until you get the very few bad endings that require you to change those values slightly. The skip function is also near pointless as it will not send you to the next choice but just next chapter. Finally, the bad ends are lazy which is a shame.
Did anyone here play Yumu Miru Kusuri? I'm looking for a more of a relationship VN.
